After a 10 yr Hiatus at Stage III (Adriamyacin and CMF Treatment + 5yrs on Tamoxifen),I'm Stage IV Breast Ca with Bone Mets since Nov 2005 on weekly Herceptin, monthly Zometa, quarterly Lupron, and daily Aromasin. I've been on Herceptin for 1 year now. My Muga scan results came in today at 50%. This is the borderline for stopping Herceptin treatments-Ugh!!! I just got the call today after finally getting a NED result on my PET Scan a few weeks ago!!!! Here's my question: If you stop, what happens next??? Pat

Pat,
I did have to take a break during my herceptin tx. due to low ejection fraction from echo. I decided to go to a cardiologist. He gave me some meds. which improved my heart function and then back to the herceptin. Once I stopped the herceptin, went back to cardio. for a check up and have since been taken off the meds.
Something to think about....

I had a Muga Scan before I started chemo and it was 70%.
Does anyone know what this means? What does 70% mean? What is normal and what is not? -
Usually if your go less than 50% your treatment is held until your EF improves. I think there is a wide range of normal values.I haven't seen anyone >70% so that is top end of normal I would say. Each person gets a baseline and the docs watch for significant decreases(>10%) or a value of <50%.
Pat, most people are able to restart within a few months.
Fists up! -
Thanks Ladies for the replies. Per my oncologist visit yesterday, 50%-80% is normal LVEF (left ventricle ejection fraction) for the MUGA Scan. He is keeping me on the Herceptin for now and will retest in a few mos vs 6mos later. I feel better that I can take a break and restart and if that doesnt work, I'll be looking at Tykerb treatment.
Alexis-What Heart Meds were you on?
Thanks, Pat -
Pat,
Glad to hear that you can continue with the Herceptin. I do believe it is our wonder drug for sure. I was on lisinopril and toprol.

Pat,
my mother had multiple mets to lymphnodes, left lung, liver to numerous to count and bones, pleural effusion with a "3 months prognosis" on last june. she is on Herceptin every 3 weeks and now she is NED. why don't change treatment to every 3 weeks instead of 1?
my best wishes -
Lorenzo,
My onc told me that weekly treatments are tolerated a little better, but who really knows??? In 5 yrs, I'm sure this treatment will change, too!!! I have responded well for about 14 mos of Herceptin treatment and now the Zometa(1x per month) has caused some "exposed Jaw tissue" to push through and will talk to onc on Monday!!! Even at 50% on MUGA Scan, he states we can scan again in 3 vs 6 mos (I'm sure you are thinking the same as me: probably take a break from Zometa and see "another" doctor!!!! Pat -
Hi Pat,
hope you are doing fine and feeling better.
