To ease into it and 'learn' push-ups, start in the 'up' position and just bend at the elbows as much as possible without breaking form, then of course, push back to original position (even just one inch is okay). Be sure to keep your entire body aligned, not allowing yourself to sway/break at your midsection or (my favorite!) stick your butt way up like you're doing Downward Dog!

Doing these from the knee-supported position is fine. Aim for 2 sets of 10-15 (eventually).

    Hi MB!

A lurker here looking for some "remedial" instruction...

For those of us whose knees don't go that high, are we supposed to curl the spine (like a crunch or something?) to get knee and elbow together? There's no way I can do this if I keep my spine erect...help!!!

    Thanks!

LA, work at it slowly, movement is importatn in the beginning....ideally you twist your upper body and your knee comes up to your elbow, to start with go as far as you can...
    good luck

Marin, that's how I help people to do push-ups too. Worked for me when I first started.

After surgeries I even started doing wall push-ups.... There's a couple of women at my martial arts school who have never done much physical and that's how they're starting them. Do as many on the floor as possible and finish off on the wall.

I wasn't sure I'd ever get back to doing them again after surgeries but it can happen! I'm up to 100 - as 30/25/20/15/10 - in our "5-minute drill" - 5 minutes worth of puahups and situps. For the longest time I was doing a lot more crunches, etc than pushups and lots of resting! But...persistence works!!!

I have to say that I don't even have time to take a pee anymore. Working everyday is just too much. I haven't walked but 3 times in the past 3 weeks. Between the new job and my youngest switching from soccer practices twice per week to football practices 5 days per week, the "me" time has gone out the door. We should all be women of leisure and be able to shop, get massages, workout with our own personal trainer(MB), and do volunteer work, not running around like crazy fools. Oh I will admit that I did work in a pedicure last Saturday in between football dropoff/pickup. Hey, it's still blazing hot over here and I must have flip-flop pretty feet. LOL!!

Keep them coming MB. I'm still reading and banking the knowledge for future reference.

Ok, first off, I'm not so sure about this new stuff...BUT

    Shirley...glad you here enjoy......

today I feel like doing a little bicycling....

lay on your back....knees up and at a 90 degree bend...hands cupped around your ears....

now....elbow to your opposite knee...kicking straight out the other leg...switch sides...

if you are ready do this for about 25 each side...that only gets you to the corner store but its a start...pretty soon youll be bicking to Alaska...or in Deb's case to NY.....lol..

     Happy Monday

    Hi MB,

Just found this site.  Don't know if you can help.  Had a double mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction in Jan/April.  Looking for exercise to get rid of the upper tummy bulge that was left after the lower tummy removed for the DIEP.  Still unable to do reg. sit ups, so need something a little easer. Any ideas.  Thanks Pam

    OK a little tummy work....

sitting on the floor....hands behind your head, or cupped around your ears, is my favorite place...

now for the work...(an evil laugh)

raise your feet, keeping your legs as straight as you can....

1-2-3 now lean back slightly....ha....hold it

the goal is a nice V shape....

realx and repeat....don't for get to breathe and drink 8 glasses of water a day...and 10,000 steps

    Sheila,

I too work at a desk.(10 hours a day)..so here is my plan, I hope it will help....

before work....I put my pedometer right after my shower...

now I get everything separately from the kitchen for breakfast...making special trips ...one for the bowl, one for the cereal..oh yeah we eat in the dinning room since its a little further away...lol..you got the idea...

now for work....besides drinking lots of water...and the many bathroom trips....I also get up every hour...walk to another desk or to the window and look out.( i try to get 50 steps a trip) . I take each peice of mail to the mailbox on the corner...I walk around the file cabinets to get to a specific one...I will print something to the furthest printer...lol....once again , you get the idea......

Now...at home...same thing different time...many trips...and before I go to bed, which is early since work starts at 6:30...I must make it to my 10,000 steps...I just walk in circles if I have to...but usually get them done on the treadmill, or little trampoline....

    It can be done...good luck...

    the Czar of exercise...lol..mb
