Boil big pot of water with hammhocks and/or leftover ham and hambone. When halfway cooked down fill back up with water or stock and pour in pinto beans or any variation of hard beans you like. Make sure you make sure the water and/or stock is filled to the rim. When half an hour before done, put in potatos or other veggies you like and season to taste. Great with cornbread.

Ham & beans is one of our favorites Robbin! We like ours best cooked over a camp fire. Doesn't hurt to add some onion, maybe a little celery, some jalapleno (if you like the spice).

You're the only person other than me that I ever heard recommending adding potatoes though. That is an excellent addition to ham & beans! A bit of chopped cabbage doesn't hurt either, if you like cabbage! Ronda

Sounds good....I make mine with raw/hard pinto beans, soak over nite..tben rince in morning, I like mine a bit thicker so I cook some of it with the lid tilted to evaporated the water...
After I rinse, I add double the water, add chopped onions, ham hock, lots o garlic salt and papper and let simmer nad cook all day and if i feel like it I add a tad of BBQ sauce or steak sauce or what i feel I want to put in....tht there is a meal in itself corn bread or I get french bread and put the pan in the center of table...if I dont want it so thick I keep lid on and stir occassionally, but these days of cooking are almost long gone and Schwanns truck comes to my house, as i dont have energy to cook big meals, especially since my son flew the coop and dh and i dont eat much... sounds good now..but lately have been into pot stickers by Schwanns man...

if I make mine with french bread or pryrnees bread I have a plate with raw green onins or chopped red ones and some grated cheese for those who what it.

Had this for supper tonight. YUM. Used country ham and it was so good, but I'll be drinking water all night.
