    from WickipediA:

Gayla Peevey (b. 1943) is perhaps best known for her song, "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" (Columbia, 1953). A child star from Oklahoma, she was 10 years old when she recorded the novelty song written by John Fox in 1950.

[edit] The story of the song
The Oklahoma City Zoo had no hippo at the time, and this song was recorded in conjunction with a campaign to buy "Gayla" a hippo for Christmas via donations from the public. A baby hippo, named Matilda, was procured and flown in to Oklahoma City and presented by Peevey to the zoo.
