Christie Carol Fountaine

Christie Carol Spencer Fountaine, 48, of Charleston passed away October 25, 2006, in the Hubbard Hospice House.

She was born May 27, 1958, in Elkins and was a daughter of the late Dr. James and Isabelle Spencer.

Christie graduated from Elkins High School in 1976, moved to Charleston and soon began working for Flattop Insurance. Christie had been a commercial account manager and automation coordinator for Acordia since 1996. She earned the professional designation of Certified Insurance Service Representative, Accredited Advisor in Insurance, and Certified Professional Insurance Woman. She had been a member of the National Association of Insurance Women and the Charleston Association of Insurance Women since 1999. As a member of CAIW, Christie had served as secretary since 2000 and was the current president.

After her diagnosis with breast cancer, Christie was the inspiration to launch the now annual American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery Breast Cancer Tennis Round Robin. Every year she worked the registration desk for Accordia at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Christie is survived by her husband, Thomas; and four sons, Spencer, Derek, DeWayne, and Garrett; two brothers, John Spencer and wife, Cynthia, of Franklin, and Jeff Spencer; three sisters, Nancy Spencer of Charleston, Stephanie Humphris of Harker Heights, Texas, and Amy Taylor and husband, Terry, of Mill Creek; nephews, Clinton Humphris and Clint Taylor; nieces, Adrienne Sherrill, Emily Humphris, and Alexis Taylor; two great-nephews, Kalin and Eli Sherrill; and one great niece, Abigail Sherrill. She is also survived by her Aunt Ruth Wamsley and husband, Willard, of Mill Creek and Uncle Jerry Haddix and wife, Valerie, of Elkins.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Preston Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Christie's quote, “With each day we get stronger and continue the fight until there is a cure” can be found gracing the back of many Cancer Research t-shirts. She believed in the hope for a cure and was a fighter throughout her battle with breast cancer. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Christie's honor to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the Hubbard Hospice House.
