Just discovered this site, so I thought I'd ask a starter question!
My partner underwent treatment for breast cancer last year, and after several minor operations had a mastestomy on one side with reconstruction (Dorsal flap). The whole operation went fine. She is now concerned about reoccurance of breast cancer in the remining tissue on the side of the mastectomy.
Does anyone know the likelihood of reoccurance in a breast that's had a mastectomy, given that we've been told that around 5% of the original breast tissue would remain?
Thanks in advance for any help.

My wife, Kathy, underwent a ma.st and then had a tram flap done. SHe also was told that the chance of reccurance was extremely low. Well, she had a reccurance. The main tumor was along the chest wall underneath the recontructed breast. There alos were many bone mets and liver mets. So, it can happen. You need to have the recontructed area checked too.

A mastectomy is NOT a lifetime free pass out of mammos. My surgeon told me that no matter how well she scraped the inside of my skin, there would always ne breast cells left, and those cells would be possible starting sites for a new cancer. So This January, I will schedule a mammo.

REByers, your partner's prognosis depends mostly on the pathology report for her original cancer. She should keep copies of the report for every test she takes, starting with the mammo that found the cancer.

larry48, sorry your wife is still dealing with this Beast. It is a horrible disease, beyond doubt.

Thanks for the replies so far. Off back to see the specialist next Monday to schedule the 2nd MAS and reconstruction.
I will have to ask for copies of the test results. Here in the UK it is standard practice for the NHS to retain your results centrally, and we have to ask for copies, as it's nopt normal practice to give us any.

My partner was part of a family history study, and the current information we are getting back is that her family has an, as yet, undiscovered hereditory predisposition to BC. One of her sisters has just come out of hospital after have the same MAS and reconstruction. So her husband and I are curerntly operating a mini partner support group!!

Thanks again for the feedback so far.
