I'm really worried. Tomorrow my aunt goes in to have her breast removed and I'm really on edge. She was just diagnosed about 3 weeks ago and she herself is quite worried. She is only about 2 years older than my mum wich in turn has me worried about my mum. Ok well the question I have is what can we expect after the sugery? How long might it take to heal and just well what to expect.

Hi tigerstar:
I had a double mastectomy in May and was up and about the next morning. I was feeling great. I had an iv with pain meds so if there was pain I just had to push a button. I also had a drain in each breast... a tube that drains excess fluid. I had mine in for quite a while but some people only for a few days. Hope this helps..tell your aunt to get on this chat, too. I found out so much chatting with other ladies here..since they have all had bc...there are also lots of family members, like you, who come on line. Take care and lots of hugs for you and your aunt. -

They are only concidering this day sugery. SHe goes in at noon and is out not to long after. They only way they will keep her in the hospital is if something goes wrong. Thankyou for yur thouhgts as well, I am really greatful. -
tigerstar,
Your Aunt will need some help for awhile when she gets home with drains and her mobility will be limited she should not be left home alone for a few days . Will some one be there for her ? I really hate they are sending her home the same day, insurance company !?
Make sure she has button down the front short sleeve nighties and shirts for easy access to the drains and bandages. Some things to have at the house maybe some
easy quick microwave dinners extra pillows to prop up her arm on surgery side (every ones different though) Light reading and fun movies to watch .
Good luck to your Aunt and you and Mom ~

Here is an update on my aunt for all. Her sugery went quite well , the only mishap was that they almost removed the wrong breast. She is happly resting at home with a friend to help her out. Her only real complaint is that the tap e they used for the bandage is bugging her. She goes in in ten days to two weeks to have the bandage changed and the drain removed. She had a rough patch in recovery and was on a ventalator for a bit but is all well now except for the obvouis. We are all breathing a sigh of relief for now as we know there is more to come. The next steps are a lung biopsy and chemo. For noew we will enjoy this relief and clam. Thank you all for your concern and help, I really appreacate it all.
