I'm talking about hide-and-seek at dusk.
Red light, green light
The corner store
Hopscotch, butterscotch, doubledutch, kickball
Mother may I?
Step on a crack
Kick the can
Red rover and roly polly
Hula hoops
Running through the sprinkler
An ice cream cone on a warm summer night; chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or maybe butter pecan
A cherry coke from the soda fountain at the corner store
Wait....
Watching saturday morning cartoons... short commercials
Fat Albert, Road Runner, He-Man and Bugs Bunny
Double feature movie shows
When around the corner seemed far away, and going downtown seemed like going Somewhere
A million mosquito bites. Sticky fingers
Cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, zorro
Climbing trees
Walking to school no matter what the weather was like
Running till you were out of breath and your side hurt from laughing so hard your stomach hurt
Jumping on the bed and pillow fights
Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down with giggles
Being tired from playing...remember that?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team
War was a card game
Water balloons were the ultimate waepon. Baseball cards in the spokes turned any bike into a motorcycle
I'm not finished yet -- eating Kool-Aid powder
Remember when....
Nobody owned a purebred dog
When a dollar was a decent allowance and another was a miracle
When milk went up a quarter and everybody talked about it for weeks
When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked & gas pumped without asking, for free, every time.
When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids came home from school
When it took five minutes for the TV to warm up and you had one
When your mom wore nylons that came in two pieces
When it was magic when dad would "remove" his thumb or maybe have you pull his finger
When it was considered a great priviledge to be taking to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents
When any parent could dicipline any kid or feed him or use him to carry groceries and nobody - not even the kid thought a thing of it.
When they threatened to keep kids back a grade..and did
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to what awaited a misbehaved student when arriving home. Basicaly we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs or gangs etc.
Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!
and some of us are still afraid of them! It is called respect!
Remember when.....
Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming "do over"
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in monopoly
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties
Having a weapon in school, meant being caugh with a sling shot
Nobody was prettier than mom
Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better
Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin
Ice cream was a basic food group
Older sibling were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors
New abilities were discovered because of a "double dare"
If you remeber most or all of these, then you have LIVED!
Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their "grown up" life
TAG! YOU'RE IT !
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand and wine in the other, body totally used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride"!

Thanks for the reminder Ninnette!! Did all of those fun things in my youth...we've come a long way baby. I now have chocolate in one hand, a glass of wine in the other....that's definitely the way to end this song!!
-
These brought back lots of fond memories.

Dang! I sure do remember those things! I feel SO sorry for today's youth because it's just not the same...

I was going to say my inner child enjoyed getting out for awile but it's never put away;) I remember riding a bike down hill, without a helmet and hoping that stopping wasn't going to hurt real bad!
Gail in NJ -
LOL Gail,
I also rolled down that hill, past the wild rhubarb & blackberry bushes, but was more worried about grandma getting mad about dirty, torn clothes than any serious boo boos.
No Janis, it's not the same and what a shame it is. How many of todays teenagers will have or even care about childhoods warm fuzzys as we remeber to share with and pass along to their kids.
Oh well, I'm going to open up a box of Godivas and drink a glass of merlot. -
Hi here in the UK I can relate to most of those memories.
They really seemed the good old days in lots of ways didn`t they? Boundaries were so much clearer and adhered to.
But there the bad things I wouldn`t want to go back to.
Being so poor we had old coats on the bed not blankets.
Having to make a fire to have hot water and clean out the grate each day.
No light bulbs upstairs in the house or carpets - it just cost too much.
Only two hours a day of kids tv - yes we still had one.
Y`know my memory has forgotten a lot of the bad things and remembered the good things just like you when the sun shone all day every day in the Summer and the Summer seemed to last for months and we played all day long without any fancy toys just skipping ropes, balls, chalk and spinning tops.
Thanks for the mewmory
