I just finished reading "Her 2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer" by Robert Bazell, a fascinating journey about a genetic discovery, that lead to the drug, the testing, the availability.

While we are always grateful to those who have gone before us, those who have made treatments more up-to-date so that we have the wealth of knowledge that is available to us, this book really made me aware of the debt of gratitude I feel for those in the labs who create these breakthroughs, and the women who agreed to be part of the original clinical trials, the pioneers who fought to have this drug made available for further studies and regular treatment.

And that sometimes, as with every advance in life, it takes just a few "activists" to put themselves out there and fight for what they know is right. While helping themselves, they are also speaking and acting on behalf of the benefits to a much larger population.
