Taking a poll: What are you taking as prevention??

Joanne, Most supplements formulated for older people do not have iron because it is known that you do not need it after menopause, so look for the ones that are for menopausal women and then double check the ingredients.
Liz, lucky you for having a doctor who refers his patients to someone who knows about nutrition and supplements. Most doctors are taught nothing about going this route and it is refreshing to learn that there are some out there who are willing to admit that they do not have all the answers.
-
You are so correct. I have Centrum for oldies and it has no iron. A nutritionist also told me to avoid copper, but to get non-copper vitamins you must buy really expensive vitamins from uncommon suppliers. Anyone else told to avoid copper? Any iron foods to avoid?
Thanks,
Joanne
-
Hi there-
yes I was told to avoid vitamins that contain iron, copper & boron by my natural path. My natural path uses her own line of supplements at www.vitalnutrients.net they have a "multi-nutrients V" that contains no iron, copper, or boron. I think the only way you can order from that company is if your a patient of a doctor that deals with the vital nutrients company but if interested you can go to the website and get the phone # and call them direct to find out if non-patients can buy from them, they do ship anywhere. I was also told that the cancer center of America has a good formula for breast cancer. Actually vital nutrients formula for the "multi-nutrients V" is based on the formula from the cancer center of america.

Hi,
I was also directed by a nutritionist to places which only sell to you if you provide her name. I have doubts about this, how do you know they are quality vitamins? The providers get a commission on these sales as well.

My doctor uses the Metagentics brand. She has visited their facility and feels confindent that their product is pure and well tested. They too, only sell through doctors, but her prices are in line with what the local stores charge, so I do not feel that she is taking advantage. Are you guys taking indole 3 carbonol? This is a supplement that is basically made of curciferous (sp?) veggies that balances your hormones naturally. Since I opted to not take Arimidex, I am using this.
-
LindaMemm-
yes, I am taking Indole 3 carbonol and eating a pinch of brocco sprout as John Hopkins recommends.
Joanne_Elizabeth-
you are absolutely right, you have to be very carefull about where your supplements come from. The company my naturalpath uses is her husbands company, he's a registered pharmacist and a naturalpath too. What I like is that she does not push her products but asks if I want to purchase them there or on my own. She did tell me that the "NOW' brand is reputable and Vitaminshoppe is good too. I know some of GNC's have been questionable especially their broccoli supplements, John Hopkins did a study and it showed that GNC's broccoli supplements did not actually have broccoli but other types of sprouts.

Hi
I have read through all of the threads with great interest.
I had the first lot of bc in 1986 and had the lumpectony and 14 lymph nodes removed, followed by radiotherapy and chemo. Back then there was little information around.I did not need Timoxofin as my periods stopped after chemo I did not know about nutrition.
To the doctor's surprise another primary occured in 2004, it returned in the same breast and they wanted to cut it off. I opted for spiritual healing, healing the mental/emotional reason I got it in the first place and used nutrition. It gradually reduced in size and to the amazement of the doctors there came a point where although the lump was still there there was no cancer evident.I still have my breast and am so healthy - full of energy etc.
I did many things, but what I would humbly suggest is :
1. Each body is different and thus have defficiencies of their own, so what is good for one is not necessarily good for all
2. It is very important to make sure you have cleared the emotional and mental reasons why you got it in the first place.Have a positive mental attitude.Watch your thoughts as the subconcious listens and takes what you are thinking as fact. You can change negative thoughts into positive and change your whole life. In other words stay completely away from fear of the cancer returning. (I actually invited cancer back into my life - but that is another story)
3. Make sure you keep your body alkaline, as someone else mentioned it is crucial. It is easy to keep track of. You can buy Ph Testing Taper and Ph Blalancing drops are available in most health stores or on the net.
4. Stay aways from sugar, processed food, white flour etc. These are acidic. There are lists on the internet for alkaline foods. Compare them all as some differ.I feel one should also stay completely away from dairy.
5 Vitamin B17 is important as are all the B vitamins, especially B12 ias it keeps your homocysteine levels down (it clogs your arteries and increases your risk of cardiovasuclar disease) . You can get a test to see what your levels are. No sense in putting more stress on your body.
6. Digestive enzymes. Taking these prevent the good white cells needing to help the digestive system whenever it gets foods it can't digest. This means the white cells (forget the name) can concentrate on eating the free radicals.
7. Look into food combining. Eating two different types of food eg carbohydrates and protein is tough on the digestive system as it needs to make two different kinds of digestive juices.
8. Check into tissue salts - make sure you have enough and the proper balance.
9. Most important - keep your liver detoxed. It is one of the most important organs in the body.
10. Listen to your body. It will tell you what it wants and doesn't want. If you eat something you shouldn't - you burp and get indigestion - yes?
There is much more, but I came on here to post my own topic as I am looking for people with similar experiences. I hope this helps. It certainly has done wonders for me.

This post is in the wrong forum. Perhaps some sprituality or victims-blame themselves forum would be more approriate.

I had my last chemo 2 days ago. I will, however, continue Herceptin until March 09.
I will soon go back to drinking Xango which I had been drinking for over a year as well as back to a green source multi vitamin, calcium, glucosomine,
I take did take a baby aspirin, garlic and CO Q-10 through chemo, as it was approved by oncologist.
I am most excited about adding Maitake Mushrooms with Reishi and Shitake mushrooms. A very experienced health food store owner in my town recommended it to keep cancer away along with higher doses of vitamin C. I did a lot of reading on it and was impressed as well as asking the oncologist and he said couldn't hurt and sounded like a good idea.
I hope to eat less suger, drink less beer, and lose 30 lbs.
Otherwise, I loved Anne's comment back in May about Letting go of what I cannot control and I'd like to add to it that I plan on leaving it in God's hands as well. Mary

Sorry I offended you Joanne - I certainly didn't mean what you said. I was merely sharing my truth and what worked for me. After all wasn't that the original posters question? l thought it might help some of you.
I am sorry if offended anyone else as well. It certainly wasn't my intention.
-
Lynda,
No need to apologize. You have some very good ideas. I just take exception to the "healing the mental/emotional reason I got it in the first place". I don't know what causes bc, but I sure don't think it is solely caused by negative emotions.
I am also taking mushrooms - Hose Defense - a blend. I keep trying to put raw ones in salads, but I really hate the way they taste raw.

I posted this question on the Taxotere/Cytoxan thread, but thought this might be a better forum, since it was here I learned of Zyflamend. Did any of you get TC and stay on Zyflamend? I've been using it for 3 weeks and can really feel it's benefit. Had my first round TC yesterday, and the nurse said to bring it next time and they'd check the ingredients, but thought perhaps someone here may have knowledge so I'd check here first. I'll try to google it to and see what I come up with, but would love to hear from any one on the subject.
Blessings to all,
Sherri

I discontiued everything but multis and calcium during chemo. Seems there is some controvery about it and some think it protects cancer cells from being killed during chemo.

I finished Mamosite rads 2 weeks ago and started Arimidex. Definitely had achy muscles and felt overall tired. I have never been a consistently healthy eater, but since diagnosis I have dropped all sugar from my diet and I have added Calcium, vitamin D 1000, and I am eating 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil with 1/4 of a cup of cottage cheese blended every day (Dr. Bodwig's) receipe for making cancer disappear. Now I am reading controversy on Flax, god it is like no one has one single for sure answer about anything regarding BC! I find it so frustrating..
-
HappyLynda, I actually feel the same way you do about causes of BC. I do not feel guilty about causing it, I just feel that I was ignorant about what I was doing to myself. I was totally taking my health for granted and putting everyone in my life ahead of myself. I wanted to find out why I got this. Although there is so much we do not know about why normal cells mutate into cancerous cells, I do believe that we can do a lot to make our cells less likely to do so. I have pretty much changed everything in my life according to your list, and all I can say is that by doing so, I feel better than I have in years, and I also feel confident that I will remain free of BC. I know that some people get mad at us when we say this but I still believe that being overweight and miserable made me sick. While going through treatments, I let go of a lot of emotional baggage, and to say I have a different outlook on life now is an understatement. I am not "blaming the victim" as some would say. I just wanted to personally figure out why I got to where I did and not go back. For me, it is empowering to take responsibilty for my previous bad habits, because by changing them, I feel like I have a fighting chance. And since I decided not to go on Arimidex, and balance my estrogen levels naturally, I have a real incentive not to fall off the wagon. I know this is not the way most people want to go, but for those of us who do, I wish that others would respect our choice, just as I respect theirs. We all have to do what we think is right for us, and as far as I am concerned, your checklist is right on.
Omaha Girl. You are right. It is so confusing. You are on the right track. Do lots of reading, find a doctor who understands nutrition and follow your instincts. I personally do not do flax or soy because of the confusion.
-
Omahagirl, what is Dr. Bodwig's) receipe for making cancer disappear? This sounds quite interesting.
Thanks,
Joanne

Wow, LindaMemm, I loved reading your post. It is a great insight into how I feel as well. It's alwasy so encouraging to hear other's plans and idea's for keeping this awful "C" word out of our lives.
Good luck and God Bless each and everyone of us as we continue this difficult journey and any more Ideas and plans are very much appreciated by me. Mary

Great topic! I just saw my surgeon and my oncologist; am 2 1/2 years out from my cancer and feel great but everytime I go for my six-month exams, I am filled with dread and fear about a recurrance.
Here's what I'm taking/doing to help keep myself healthy:
Multivitamin (Kirkland brand)
Alka-Balance supplement (Source Naturals brand)
Estro Balance w/DIM
Cod Liver Oil
Walk briskly at least two miles daily
Eat red meat no more than once a week; mostly chicken and fish, veggie burgers, lots of vegetables and fruit
Drink green tea, iced or hot
Pray

I'm looking for opinions about high quality high dose fish oil.
-
I like Barlean's. It can be found in the cold section of some health food stores. Tastes good, made all from small fish. It has a hint of rosemary/citrus flavor.
