Sent a couple of threads in June and I must admit that I haven't sent one for months, but was suprised that this forum has gone quiet and have still not had any replys.

I hope that means were all coping, but if there is anyone out there who reads this please could you give me some advice?? 

Well the first thing is that mum has finished her radium and generally feels great, but had a sharp stabbing pain the side of her masectomy and the worrying thing is that she said it was the same pain that the tumour used to give her.  Could the tumour be back already?  It was removed in Dec or is it healing pains?

Secondly shes had a grade 3 cancer, shouldn't she be on Armedix and not tamoxifen she has gone through the change?

    Hi Sharon,

    I would think that the pain is probably from the nerves healing.  I had my double mastectomy Oct. 31st of last year and I still get the shooting pains from time to time.  If she is worried about it I would definitely ask the doctor.  As for the medication I am not sure about that.  Have you discussed it with her doctor?  If you are concerned I would.  If for no other reason than peace of mind.  Take care and I will keep you and your mom in my prayers.

    Hi Sharon,

    Did your mom have her lymph nodes removed too? The nerves that were severed take a long time to heal and when they do they have what I call lightening bolts of pain. Also, as your mom becomes more active with that arm the pains will become more noticable.

    The good news is that it isn't forever. The pain does eventually subside.

    As far as the Arimidex, was your mom's cancer responsive to estrogen? That would have appeared on her pathology report as "estrogen/progesterone postive." If so, then she should be on some sort of anti-hormonal therapy like Arimidex or Femara.

    However, if your mom's cancer was "estrogen/progesterone negative" then it was not fueled by estrogen and the anti-hormonals would have no effect.

    She should definitely mention this to her doctor if it persists or worsens. It is normal to be nervous when treatment ends and when we suddenly feel a pain our mind goes to one place, and that is cancer. But 99% of the time it is nothing or "healing pains."
