With Meryl Streep and Pierce Bronson, etc.  My gal pals and I thought it was great.

Be sure to stay thru the credits--you'll be glad you did.

I had seen the play, and this movie was terriffic, too.

Oooh, I have not seen it yet but I saw the play in Boston when it first came out and absolutely loved it!  It is getting not-so-good reviews but what the heck do the critics know?  No Dark tales for me, nosiree.  I'm into schmaltzy and happy.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the critics were looking for?????  But the pic was really good----everyone I talk to has the same comment  " it's nice to come out of a theater feeling good"

Don't laugh at me.  I went on Netflix and have it waiting until the DVD comes out IF EVER!  LOL  I've been watching "serious" stuff, and now I'm going to watch some funnies.

Thanks for the tip.  I could really use a feel good movie. Doesn't it have the guy from A+E's Pride and Prejudice--Colin Firth too?

Well, one of my friends just said we should go to the movie and see Mama Mia. After she gets back from her trip we may HAVE to go see it.  I need a good laugh!

    Thanks, Dotti, for posting this.

This is definitely a girlfriend movie.  I saw the play with one of my best friends and we had so much fun and have the most wonderful memories of that day.  We now live on practically opposite sides of the country but talk often on the phone.  Can you imagine two old farts like us singing Mamma Mia to each other in greeting?  LOL  Do yourself a favor and go with someone who appreciates the same sentiments and music.  Have a ball.

Yes, thanks. I cannot wait to see it.  Tina - the preview was shown before Sex in the City and I looked at my husband  who responded "you can see that one with your girlfriends!" At least he went to see SITC with me.

I saw the movie as well-I went with 2 friends, and we took our kids, ages 10, 7, and 5, and even the kids loved it, due to all the singing and dancing. There wasn't a peep out of any of them through the whole movie. And the grown-ups loved it too!!!

Went to see it last night with one of my girlfriends--she had not seen the play (Abba addict that I am, I saw the play three times and could not imagine how they could make a decent movie out of it!!)

We both totally loved it!!  So much fun, and just as much of a "feel good" feeling after as the play.  Audience was singing and clapping, and of course "Dancing Queen" was the all time hit!!  (for those of us LE ladies who do the LeBed exercie DVD, I love that they included thay in the music for the workout--makes me feel good each time I do the workout!)

DH went to the play with me once, and enjoyed it, and I am intending to take him with me to see the movie again.

I thought the filming and scenery in Greece was fabulous!  I was a little distraught to see "007" singing and not really well at that--but I loved it!!  And I am quite impressed with Meryl Streeps abilities at dancing and singing!!

Also loved that we still never found out who Sophie's father was.

Go see it--its a no lose proposition!!

I did not remember that the "Take a Chance on Me" was towards the end, and was feeling that maybe they left it off the movie--much to my surprise, it was there and as enjoyable as can be!!

Love the credits, and loved the "encores" which are usually reserved for live shows--

Cannot recommend it highly enough, no matter what the critics say--

P.S.  Added to say first time I saw the play was with my niece, second time with my sister--I called and left messages on their answering machines today singing "Mamma Mia!  Here I go again--my my, how can I resist you?"

and did the same singinging to DH last night when I got home--sang "Take a chance on me" to him also, and he told me he loved me but please keep my day job!!!!!

Jane, I thought we did learn in the play that the dad was Sam.   Was I dreaming that?

HoHo, I heard Pierce cannot sing as well as he can charm.  Wink

Hey Tina--I am still suffering from chemo brain--SO WHO KNOWS WHAT IT WAS?

I thought it was also left in the air in the play whether Sam was her dad or not?

he he he--I guess I will have to see the play again and report back--I was so sure it was also left in the air in the play?

I loved all three guys in both the play and the movie!!

Love Pierce!!  He is married to a dear friend's daughter-in-laws' best friend and from what I hear, he is a real sweetheart, and they are very happy!

Loved it! I saw the musical in May, and the movie yesterday. I went alone, at 10:30 in the morning. (Needed a distraction while on clear liquids for my colonoscopy prep!) This was the first time I've ever liked Pierce Brosnan. I kind of liked the roughness of his singing--more true life, I suppose, though Broadway would never hire him!

I have both ABBA Gold cds, and most of their songs are on my mp3 player for the gym.

I'm ready to go see it again. And buy it when I can. What a fun love story!

Well, I loved the music, scenery and admired Meryl's singing and dancing but (I'm sorry),  I couldn't get over the plot.  It was just too under the top.  My DH yawned all through it except for the Dancing Queen number.  Let's keep dancing though, Ladies.

    • Plot, schmot.  It's supposed to be all about the music and the feeling.  BUT, I have to say that I finally saw the movie yesterday and it was nowhere near the quality/emotion of the play.  Pierce's singing was painful to watch/listen to, Meryl's was just okay.  Amanda Seyfried (sp?) was in very good voice, though.  And the "Greek chorus" was fun.  Scenery was fabulous!  I just want to go there tomorrow!
    • If you want a soundtrack, buy the original st from the stage production.  Or, buy Abba Gold for the songs.

It's definitely worth seeing, though, as relaxing summer entertainment.  Just don't set the bar too high.

ok... was anyone thinking even for a minute that Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, the actors, that is, were TOO OLD for the parts that they were supposed to be playing??  I mean, even IF she was 20 when she got pregnant with Sophie, she would ONLY be 40 now!!  The same is true for Sam...  for me, that made the movie so very not believeable!!

    Just my opinion...

I'll watch Meryl in anything and I thought she did a respectable job singing.  Pierce should not sing...he just shouldn't. LOL  I love Colin Firth too and will watch him in just about anything as well and he did ok in this film.  I enjoyed the film and it made me want to hop a plane to Greece.

Harley44 - I felt the same way you did at first about the age thing.  Then I got to thinking that it was kind of nice seeing actor that are a little older playing younger rolls instead of the teenagers playing 30 year old.  I really get sick of seeing these cute little perky things playing rolls where they are suppose to be my age.  I mean give me a break.  It is bad enough seeing unrealistic girls and guys in magazines without having to watch in the movies too.  It was nice watching the older generation running the show for a change.

P.S.  Went with my dad and 15 year old daughter.  We all three loved it.  My dad is a very serious person and it was good to see him enjoying a completely fun movie.  The movie just leaves you feeling good, which I can always use a lot of.

    Keep laughing,

    Jenny

LOL, "believable"?  Like I believe all those guys dancing on the pier with fins?  Or all the village women dancing thru the streets, singing and dancing?  LOL

I love musicals, and I never expect anything more than to be entertained.  PB will never make the stage or anything, but his lack of a great voice made his role more "real" to me--ie: a real person, perhaps with real feelings.

I don't like Pierce Brosnan, maybe because he tried to take over the role of Sean Connery, the ONLY REAL James Bond!!

I LOVE Pierce Brosnan - ever since he was in Remington Steele - he is beautiful and from what I've heard, a great guy to boot. Love Colin Firth as well. I could care less if they can sing or dance. LOL.
