Here is the scoop...

My Mum died of ovarian cancer 11 years ago.  We were so shocked and totally in the dark about cancer.  We had no idea that was any kind of genetic test out there or that it was even hereditary.  Then just last August, my older sister (51) was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. She took a genetic test which showed she was BRCA-2+.  I took the test & I also have the mutation.  My sister's cancer has once again spread, now to her lungs. She is fighting, but we are all scared for her, I'm not sure she will survive this.

I decided that I wanted to do preventative surgery, I am 48.  I have had a HYST/OOPH on June 9 & am recovering well from that. It was done laprascopically which was great, not to much pain.  I am schuduled for a double mastectomy with expanders on July 28.  (EEK)  I am 100% sure this is the right thing to do.  If I can lower my percentage for getting this dread disease, I'll do whatever I can.  My husband & son (9) are great which makes it even easier.  I want to be around for a long time & can't live month to month waiting to see if I am the next one in the family to get cancer.  I hope my younger sister at least takes the test, she is 44 and has not done anything yet.  I just couldn't do that, I feel this is what I need to do without a doubt. :)

Sorry to hear of the the problems your sister is having with ovarian cancer. Sometimes we do have to do drastic things to have better health in the future. Good luck with your surgery next week. I did bilat mast June 07 after 3 previous biopsies - two of them pre-cancer the last one early DCIS. My maternal aunt died from ovarian cancer when she was 37 and my mom was dx with breast cancer in 2001, she is doing well. My mom had the genetic testing done and was found to be negative for the brca genes.

I hope your surgery went well.  I can relate with you.  I just recently had the gentic test done and also found out I have the BCRA 2 +.  I am so torn with what to do.  I was dxed with cancer @ 38  and had a single mastectomy.  Now my oncologist wants to remove my ovaries and remove the remaining breast.  I'm having a hard time dealing with this but I guess I should do whatever it takes because I want to live a long life as well.  I have three children 5, 9, and 16.  I go back to my oncologist on Aug. 25th to make my final decision.  The thoght of more surgeries scares me but I guess it is better than chemo.  (which I had 4 years ago)  But my husband left me after I finished chemo 3 years ago so I'm not sure if I'm up to more surgery.  Please let me know how you make out with your surgery.
