continued Tissue expander pain!!

I know many of you will get sick of me telling this but Tami, have you tried putting your PS' sample implants in your old bras? That alone gave me a much better idea how a 500 cc or 550 cc implant looked on my chest.
My 550 cc implants seemed to be a large B-cup or C-cup on me. And this was what I expected after playing around with the samples he had. Good luck!

Hi Ladies,
Gangl, I saw my PS today and told her about the increase in feeling of tightness in my cleavage and at the lower end of my foobs. She said that I could go back to physio and have the chest wall stretched and to also start back on my exercise and weight lifting routine as tolerated. I am feeling not as tight and sore as before and I think that taking down my DD's pool and pulling it and rolling it up was the cause of a lot of the pain. Things are starting to feel better now. I think that I did too much too soon and I was using muscles that I didn't even know I was using.
Also the PS took pictures of my new foobs and she said that "You are my best reconstruction yet". I was pleasantly surprised by this. I told her that is good as you want to be the best reconstruction yet. She is going to give my all of my pictures on a disc and I will have to post them when I get them. My DH says that the foobs look great. It is hard to get used to these things when all that you want is your old boobs.. What a trip this has been for sure. I see her again in a month. Onward to nipples and tatoos. Back to physio to try and keep my chest wall muscles loose. The PS thought that the foobs were really soft feeling. I am going to use either Bio Oil or Vit E oil on the scars. She said that was O.K. to do. I told her that I liked the Vit E oil better and she asked me why.I told her because I thought that it worked quicker to lighten up the scars. She thought that this was helpful to tell her other patients. I cut the end off of a Vit E cap and spread it on the scar twice a day in the am and pm.
Hope all are doing O.K. and not in too much pain. Please try and hang in there. Go for the size that you want, and remember at the exchange surgery you will be SOFT and you will feel soo much better.
Take Care All,
Kerry

Hi ladies,
I've had 3 fills of 60 cc each at weekly intervals (on top of 60 cc at surgery). Each fill feels like a heart attack for 8 hours, then like I've been kicked in the chest for the next 24 hr despite pain meds. I'm reluctant to slow down too much because I want this over with. Plus, my PS feels if you go too slowly, it allows scar tissue to build up and decreases your ability to stretch. My post op pain was minimal, so I find myself stunned and afraid I won't be able to achieve the size I want (big B almost C). Has anyone had to stop before their desired size because the muscle couldn't stretch anymore? Certainly there has to be a limit.
To those of you with pain after the exchange surgery: were your fills also painful?
While I'm glad I'm not alone in my pain, I hope we all find more comfort soon.
Good luck to all.

Carol,
I had a lot of pain with my fills, but I was filled very quickly. One of the Residents in Plastic Surgery had the mind set that you had to keep stretching the muscle once you got started. I think that this is true to a point. But I think that you can achieve the same thing with smaller fills once a week or every 2 weeks, to be able to tolerate the expansion process. Slow and steady wins the race. 30cc's every week in O.K. or 50cc's every 2 weeks is O.K. too. What ever you can tolerate. There is no race to win and it only gets more painful the quicker that you go. Hope that helps.

Hi All,
I just had my third fill yesterday. I am up to 300cc and very dissappointed. My expanders are spreading across my body instead of outward. I still have very little protrusion and still look flat chested in t-shirts. I was a small C before and I asked him if I am going to be the same size and he said he will do his best which I take to mean "probably not". I am very upset as small boobs are going to look ridiculous w/ all the weight I have gained. I need to lose about 25 lbs to be the size I was when I was an A cup. It is really hard for me to lose weight now. I tried WW before I was dx and did lose 12 lbs but I am a stress eater and my food of choice is chocolate. It took me 4 months to lose 12 lbs and it was hard. It seemed I went to bed every night hungry. I cannot imagine being on a diet for 8 months. Plus I excercised for 90 minutes 5 times a week and I cannot do that now. Then the steroids and fluid retention kicked in and I gained weight as most of us did w/ BC. I can barely get 20 minutes of aerobics before exhaustion sets in. I am 5'6" and 149. I need to get down to 140 to look good and 130 to be considered thin enough on which A cups will look appropriate.
And the pain is getting really bad. I have having to take Lortab daily. I take it before I get my morning cup of coffee and have to sit for 30 minutes waiting for it to kick in before I can even begin to move around comfortably. The expanders feel like they are moving on the sides and it is uncomfortable under my arms. I know my PS is good. I have seen his work and whenever I mention his name to a nurse, I am told I am with the best. So maybe, I just need to quit worrying and wait for the outcome. Still.....

I am filled to 350 each and think I am much bigger than the 34 a-b cup I was. i am 5'2" and 108 lbs..I would like 50 more in each but if I was 600 I would be huge.
I think there must be some difference on measuring unless I was super flat before and just was not aware LOL
-
Hello BSNevada,
I am 5'-5", and was a 'B'. I only had 335cc's in the expanders. That brought me up to a 'C'. Anything more, and I would have been a 'D'. I was very self conscious swimming. I think the difference in cc's must be due to our individual rib cage size, and whether we have a spare tire to increase our 'circumference'. After the exchange, I got 275cc implants which puts me right back at a 'B'. Maybe a 290 would have been better, but I don't think they come in such small increments. Oh, well.
Debbie, I think it is normal for you to expand to the sides rather than out. The way the expander is made causes it to move that way. My PS told me up front that the expander would go out to the sides, but not to worry...it is not the final shape you will have. I felt 'excess' up against my armpit. I rationalized that it was the way the pockets must need to be formed....or the expanders would not have been designed to go outward. After my exchange, everything is right where it should be. Tonight I went for a little jog for the first time, and it is truly amazing that I can't feel any difference from the real thing, except that I don't bounce as much, and that is much nicer for running! So, hang in there. It's all part of a process, and it will pass. And then you will look great. I have put on weight as well, but will have to work hard when I am healed up to get in shape. It is a welcome challenge. Good luck and hang in there. No pun intended!
Kerry, I'm jealous...I'll fish my PS for compliments when I see him this week. We can compare....but I think I look great. My daughter said now I just need to work below the waistline.... : (
Mikki -
Hi Ladies,
Debbie, try and hang in there. At 5'6" and 149 lbs you are not far off from me. I am 5'7" and 150 lbs and I need to loose 10 lbs also. It is hard, no exercise and sitting around and eating because you cannot do anything else and you just gain weight. I know how you feel. You will get more exercise as you feel better. Try and not get too discouraged about the expansion process, it is a process for sure and very hard on the mind, as you wonder how things will turn out. Ask the PS what he thinks. Talk to him about what you want the final outcome to be.
Mikki, I am the same as you. I was also a C when expanded and a B with my final implants. I keep telling myself that my foobs would look bigger if my tummy was smaller. LOL, LOL,LOL. I need work from the waist down. 10 lbs has to go and starting on Monday I am going to get serious about it.

Hello all, I got brave last Fri. and took 45cc's and done well. I think it is much better to go slow where you are comfortable than to take it in at big amounts. There would be no way I could go to work if they put in large amounts. I am able to go and get filled on Fri. mornings and then go in to work. I am up to 205 cc's. I am going for 50cc's this week it has taken a bit to get worked up to the 50cc's and now maybe in a couple of weeks I can go for 60cc's. My PS says there is no race in getting this done. I figure I will set a goal of 400 and see where I am at there. I so much want to be a C cup.
Debbie hang in there girl, mine spreads across my chest also. I look like I have two balls on my chest, but little by little. Maybe you are getting yourself all upset over nothing. We can hope that you will love the way you look when its over. I know I think these expanders are the uglest things I have ever seen. I hate to see them myself alone my husband seeing them.....lol. Thank goodness this is not the ones we have to keep for good.
bsnevada thanks for posting those cc's , i found that helpful. I should be 405cc's by Aug. 15th if I should take just 50cc's till then. I will just have to watch on the way there about the size. I know once I get to the size then I will have to wait 4 weeks and then the exchange surgery gets down. You are the around the weigh i am normally I also have put on some weight but I stand 5'6". I have been going on my walks again and that makes me have so much energy. I am ready to start lifting some weights, but will hold off till after exchange surgery before I get back into all that toning stuff. I am still researching Saline vs. Silicone. I don't know anyone with Silicone around me. I am just worried if I get the Silicone and what if I don't have the insurance or whatever when the 3 years comes up to get the MRI then what? One girl I know says she can feel the rippling in her's and she has saline........so confused about the two. I wish the silicone would of been out on the market for more than 4 years since FDA released them again. I would feel better. I really would like to have silicone, but makes me wonder if I am making a huge mistake. Oh well it wouldn't be the first...lol.
Carol I really think you should slow down one week and just take a smaller amount, you would find you feel so much better, no pain. I like no pain if I can have it that way. I was so much happier starting out small and working up to the 50. I am able to do everything I done before almost. I have weed eated in the yard, shampoo'd carpets, washed car, which at one point I wondered if I was going to ever feel like doing any of those things ever again. And to each there own, everyone is different. That is what makes each of us so special..............Hugs to all. Tami
-
Thank you Mikki,
I feel so much better now, after reading your comments
these are so hard and irregular(my left side had a prev. lumpectomy and surgical biopsy), so the expander is higher and different the right one looks pretty good but a flatter shape. Do you have saline or silicone? Will they be shaped like real breasts??
Our kids are always telling us the truth about our "not so good"
features...LOL
I do not have girls but my son is "too honest"

Hi everyone,
I'm really glad I found this site!!!! I have been so scared and upset lately and have a million questions. I had DCIS and had a lumpectomy in April. They did not get clean margins and have recommended that I have a mastectomy since they also saw something on the mri in a different area which would need to be biopsied plus this will allow for better breast reconstruction and it will take away the risk. Since the lumpectomy scar is terrible looking, and reconstruction is covered, eventually, I know I'll look good. I will have the sentinal node tested plus a few nodes tested the day of the surgery. It sounds like this may cause additional pain? I will have my surgery on August 7th and will have an expander put in. One of the reasons why I waited is because I had to decide whether I wanted another lumpectomy and have radiation or whether to go with the mastecomy, of which I am terrified. I also needed to quit smoking before the surgery (which is a good thing but the last thing I wanted to do before dealing with this!) Since I am sick of being biopsied and having MRI's and don't want to worry about it coming back, this is where I'm headed. The doctors never said anything about what I have read about the pain. The PS RN just said the worst pain will be the first 2 days in the hospital. I have had broken ribs before so I know what that pain is like. How did everyone make out with the drainage tube. I dread that thing too.
From what I understand on this site, it is best to the saline injected at a slow pace because it reduces the pain. It would be nice to have the permanent implant by the end of the year, but who knows? I'm a B not and don't care about becoming bigger. I'm also afraid of the implant going up near the shoulder blade like I read here and saw in pictures. How does that happen?
I'm wondering how long people have been out of work with just one expander? When were you all able to drive again?
God Bless...
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
I'm midway through expansion for PBM in June. I'm sorry if I worried you about the pain after fills. My last two were only 5 days apart because of my PS vacation schedule. She offered to stop at a lower level, but I belligerently pushed on. My bad. Since it has been 9 days since my last one, I'm going for the regular 60cc again today. We'll see.
Post mastectomy pain was not bad. Just plan on doing nothing for a while. I was able to drive short distances within a week (when my drains came out), but sometimes I preferred the pain meds to the freedom of driving for another week.
Best of luck with surgery.

carolyn, I had a unilateral mast with expander placed at the time of the surgery. I was only filled 30cc at surgery and never experienced real pain. I had what could be described as a dull ache. I never took narcotics after they disconnected my pain pump (I stayed one night in the hospital). Even for the 2+ hr ride home, I used extra strength Tylenol and I was fine. My drain was pulled at my post-op appointment. I think I drove at about 2 weeks. By then, I felt comfortable that I could make any fast moves without ripping out my stitches. My fills started at 3 weeks post surgery and were usually 60cc every two weeks. I never had pain from my fills and always told my PS when I could feel the fill. My PS said that filling too fast or too much at a time causes the muscle to fight the expander and push it into unnatural positions (like up to your shoulder or into your armpit....not the look you are going for!) not to mention painful. My expander looked very good throughout expansion. Best wishes
-
Thank you so much, Carol and Rudy. That makes me feel much better. A few people told me not to go on the internet but I've been so worried all the time that I don't want any more surprises. Originally, my doctors said The DCIS was small and I'd just need a lumpectomy and radiation and I'd be done. Well, everytime I met with the doctor I got a different story. I never, ever thought I'd be dealing with a mastectomy but I want a proper reconstruction and partial reconstructions don't work well, I'm told!
They said they would give me a bra to wear in the hospital. I have a place to go to in order to get a bra during the filling time. Do you know when I should get measured for that?
Thank you again for responding! I'll make sure my fills are not rushed!!! We're going to Duck NC for vacation on 9/14 and that's the only thing I have to look forward to now so if I have to skip a fill I will.
-
Thanks so much to all of your for your support. I am doing better. I was just in one of those moods when I posted. I am still in a lot of pain but only on the left (freaky way high side). I bought a new sports bra and the right side is getting close to my natural size. I did have to call the doc and get more Lortab's. I am so afraid of becoming addicted. I tried not taking them and ended up laying in bed and then got a backache.
I called the doc today and asked could he do 100 on the right and 50 on the left and No, he wants to do it evenly so if I only take 50 now each time, then that will be 4 more weeks plus the month wait. I was hoping to have my exchange no later than mid september so I can go on vacation mid October. Actually, if I take the pain meds, I can do most anything except move my left arm across my body. I went blueberry picking yesterday and was able to reach up to get the big ones at the top. Went to work today and lifted and put together frames just fine.
I guess after having such an easy time with my dbl mast, I was not expecting to have trouble. I don't like taking pain pills and they make me depressed. How do people get high off these things?
I am not as freaked out about having smaller boobs. I am in a lot better frame of mind. I have been able to work in the yard and that always helps. Thanks again for letting me know I am in the right place. Love you gals.

I am in the process of tissue expansion. about 580 cc now. B-C up size. They are rock hard and still tender. areas of redness since the beginning. Can anyone tell me what to expect when the expanders are taken out and the permanent ones put it? Will they be softer or move at all?
-
Gale1,
It will be HEAVEN!
-
Hi Everybody,
I just got another 100cc and now am up to 400cc. I have one more fill next Friday. At first the pain did not seem to be too bad until the pain meds wore off. I was very uncomfortable last nite as I still have been sleeping on my stomach. I fear those days may be over and I have to take a valium to get to sleep on my back. This morning the pain was pretty bad but thank goodness for the meds. They knock the pain right out so rather that staying home and crying, it is off to work.
My exchange is scheduled for first or second week of September. I still have the left Frankenboob really high which he said will be fixed when he releases more scar tissue and the implant will sit lower.
When you get the exchange, how long do you have to sleep on your back? Someone on the other list said no housework for 3 weeks???? I have a hoard of animals and have to vacuum everyday! My husband does not have the time or energy to do it. Is this true? I am very particular about my house and never failed to clean it even when I was so sick from chemo. It just took longer. But I don't want to mess up my foobs and will do exactly as they say.
Thanks.
Debbie
-
Hi again, Debbie. How LUCKY you've been able to sleep on your stomach at all! I've not been able to sleep on it since my mast surgery on May 1st!! I'm finally able to sleep on one side, but my own "Frankenboob" side is still too painful for even that! Having my exchange August 12 so will let you know if and when I can sleep on my stomach again. Can't wait!
-
Sneakypie, It is now really hard to sleep on my stomach because of the frankenboob. I put a pillow under the other side so the frankenboob does not have pressure on it. But about 2am the pain meds wear off and I am back on my back.
I am so excited for your surgery. Can't wait. Everybody says the exchange is fantastic. Believe or not, my husband felt my expanders for the first time Wednesday and was shocked at how hard they are. I told him, "Now you know why I complain everytime.". I am always asking my gf's to "feel my boob". I guess when I get my implants, I will be saying "see my boobs".

Hi Ladies,
I bought a really comfy bra the other day. It is a WonderBra Medium Support Wire Free Air Form Style 2078. The box says that it is revolutionary breathable fabric that molds to the body. I wore it for the first time today to work all day and driving all day long and came home and it was still so comfy on the foobs. Usually at night I cannot wait to get my bra off and just get the elastic off of my body. It only comes in 2 colours, white and a beige/rose colour. I wish that it came in every colour of the rainbow as I would buy them all. The most comfy bra the I have ever worn. I am buying 1 of all different kinds to see the ones that I like the most.
Debbie, When I got my new implants I could not stop looking at them. I would go into the bathroom and look in the mirror in amazement. I was going into the bathroom about 6 times a day to look, it was just so much better then those HARD expanders.

Hi Kerry -
That bra sounds great - from what store did you buy it?
Thanks!
Amy
-
Amy, I live in Ontario, Canada and I bought the bra at The Bay. Do they sell Wonderbras in the USA? You could always check out their web site, www.wonderbra.ca. The bra is really soft. My PS has not cleared me yet to wear underwire bras. I could not find the bra on wonderbra.com but I found it in wonderbra.ca. I wonder if Wal-Mart would carry it in the USA? I don't know if you can order directly off of the Canadian website. Hope that helps.
Kerry
-
Thanks Kerry! I did look at their website - the US one and didn't find it. I will look at their Canada site - thanks for the info. I don't believe Walmart carries that brand, but I'm thinking I may have seen the brand at Kohls. I'l have to follow up on that ~
I have many fond memories of parts of Ontario! I grew up just outside Detroit and we used to go across the water often to Windsor and beyond. Windsor Raceway was a blast. Beautiful parks and wonderful friendly people! I know it is more of a pain now- you can't just run across to a restaurant - have to have a passport. Real drag! Have had some terrific meals in Canada!!
Amy
-
Is this the same wonderbra that is sold in stores like Leggs-Hanes-Bali? If so, I would like to try and find it. It sounds really nice. Do you have any problems with the front of the bra? I cannot fill out the front due to being a bit flat but my VS Ipex doesn't show this. I am having a hard time finding bras that help me with this.

hello ladies-
aye carumba, i'm back and seeking advice......
by way of an update/background, mom had her exchange surgery on june 18th. she got silicone implants after being expanded to 225 cc's on both sides. she was an almost B before her double mastectomy. she is now a C cup (although she requested a B cup).
so, we're 7-ish weeks in and she's still in a lot of pain. she has continual burning (neurontin not helping), pain in her back, etc. she said she feels as if the implants are pulling away from her body. she also says she feels the same tightness as if she still had the expanders.
has anyone else had this experience?
she is supposed to begin taking arimidex soon but doesn't want to deal with possible side effects while feeling this discomfort...
as always, i would appreciate any input/wisdom/help...anything.....
thanks everyone,
michele

Hi Michele, First of all I want to say your are a GREAT daughter to help your Mom with this support group! You are very special! I have not had my exchange yet, Not for quite a few months yet, unfortunatly! I had my bilateral mast. with tissue expanders put in at same time.{ May 23rd} My PS blew me up to 400cc and 300cc's!!!!!!!!! Can you imagine, ! { I am 54 and 5 feet tall and 125 pounds} He must personally like BIG breasted women, I told him I didn't want to look like Pamela Anderson!!!Then 3 weeks later put in another 180cc's ! SO, Needless to say I also suffered in silence for 2 more weeks until my husband found this wonderful site, and I knew everyone else started out with a very small amount at first, 30cc! He did not explain things to me, so I thought everything was suppose to feel like that! So, I found myself a new PS and he is very compassionate and caring, He took out enough to make me comfortable and wanted me to wait 2 mo. until the tissue and muscle stopped burning and the feeling of tightness left me. { I felt like a metal of armor around my chest with barbed wire around my ribs and back. Your mom is not alone in her pain. But, What I don't understand is why she is still feeling pain after her exchange? If you read everyone else says it feels GREAT after. If she does not get feeling better real soon, I would walk in to your PS's office and demand something done. or find another PS! My PS said after my exchange. I will feel so much better. It sounds to me like your Mom hasn't finished steching her Pectorial muscle and tissue yet. I am surprised she was only 225cc's when she was done. I am 375cc's now and still need to be over expanded to have a little give room for the silicone implant.I want to end up being a B cup. I am just starting to feel comfortable with my expanders. I have my next fill Sept. and am only having 30cc's at a time. I do not want to have any more pain if it can be helped. Everyone says take it slow! I am so sorry for your Mom's pain. She must be having alot of MELTDOWNS, I know I did! I have to travel 2 hrs. to my PS appt.'s, You may have to go out of town to get a second opinion, Yes, I am sure they are friends. Most DR's are not going to say anything bad about another Dr.My PS said he didn't understand why so much put in me at first, but said every Dr. does it different. I GUESS MAYBE!!! Please keep us posted. I think alot af women don't come back to this thread after they have their exchange, and I wonder how everyone is doing. I wish you and your Mom Best of Luck and many tender hugs!! Jeanie
-
Hi Michele,
The only thing I can think of is that maybe the ps had to do a bit of work extending/changing the expander 'pocket'.
In my case the ps extended the pocket in a couple of places and I certainly felt the burning feeling you mentioned and the 'pulling away' sensation. I think the area close to the breast bone is most sensitive with lots of nerve endings so if that's the area she is getting most pain then maybe her ps had to do a lot of work there. The back pain could be spasm or fatigue from altered posture trying to 'protect' the chest.
Anyway she really needs to ask her ps because 7 weeks is a long time to still have this much pain. If you can't get there to see him then I'd call him anyway ASAP
Good luck and all the best!
Farrah

I go tomorrow and that will give me 355cc's I am not hurting and am only taking 50cc's every Fri. Nothing like it was in the beginning. My expanders are so much softer now. I will be a full C cup when finished the PS told me last week I was only a B now. I cannot wait till he say no more fills, then it will be 8 weeks till the exchange surgery gets done. I am just glad I don't hurt anymore, went threw enough of that in the beginning. You all take care. Hugs to all
-
Hi Ladies,
Michell,
Sorry to hear that your Mom is still having problems. My implants and chest did feel tight after the exchange surgery. My PS told me to push my implants around but I do a gentle massage twice per day and that helped me. Over time the foobs did become softer but they are not as soft as my natural ones. I think that it takes time.
Janelle,
Yes, the end of the bra is where I loose the poof. I just do not fill out the end of the bra like I used to. I am going to see the PS tomorrow and I will ask about this. I wonder if when I have the nipples done maybe this will help a little bit with this. I will let you know what she says. I am in Canada but I have heard a lot of women recommend the VS Ipex. I am going to the US for vacation soon and I will try and stop at VS.
Take Care All,
Kes
