RED Popcicles
Someone sent me something about sucking on RED only Popsicles during the chemo treatments to prevent moth sores. This is a prevention no treatment beginning about 15 minutes before infusion continually throughout it, and for about a half hour after it. The ice seems to constrict blood vessels and prevent irradiation. The Popsicle as to be Red because the other flavors have too much acid in them. I am going to try it on #4 this week my #3 was not so good it took a long time to get over it..... I will let you know if its worth it when its over. My mood has changed a little since the 3rd one too I heard it was hard on several girls. I just found out my ex mothelaw of 32 years who is 78 years old has BC and she has boobs like Dolly Patron but they are going to do a lump thing I dont want to butcher the word. Does anyone fall asleep at there desk getting there....

Hi There "Enjoy Life"
Just wanted to say that any color Popsicle helped me tremendously not only w/mouth sores, but an extremely dry mouth from chemo. Sometimes I would need them in the middle of the night, and DH would graciously (sometimes not so graciously) go downstairs to get them for me as I take sleeping pills & pain pills and he's afraid of me going down stairs at nite. Also Popsicles helped me after chemo when I didn't want to eat but needed fluid. I would suggest you try whatever flavor you like and see what works for you but would highly recommend them to all you gals out there. I was not able to use them at the oncologist's office as it is the size of a shoebox and no room for a cooler. But it would have been nice as water is getting soooo old!
Hope you are feeling better each day.

enjoylife,
"The Popsicle has to be Red because the other flavors have too much acid in them."
IMHO, someone is pulling your leg. Some popsicles are red because food coloring is added to them--Red Dye #40, for example. Others are red because the juices of red-colored fruits or vegetables are added. There are some strawberry-flavored "popsicles" in my fridge right now that are red because of the addition of "beet juice." The "Wild Berry" popsicles are red because they contain juice from boysenberries. I also have lime-flavored popsicles that are green, and banana-flavored ones that are yellow, etc. Although it's tempting, I don't think I'm going to thaw them out and check them with my handy, home-use pH meter.
I will admit that I don't remember all the organic chemistry I was taught, but I don't recall learning anything about the chemistry of food coloring that would make red-colored popsicles any less acidic than yellow, orange, green, or blue ones. (Yes, they come in those colors, too.) I also will note that it's difficult to find "real" Popsicle-brand popsicles anymore, so maybe there is something specific about the chemistry of real Popsicles that makes them different from the ones marketed by Edy's, Mayfield, and Freezer-Pleezer.
Remember that many women get Adriamycin as part of their chemo regimen. Adriamycin is bright red, and it's usually administered via a large syringe with a needle that injects the drug into your i.v. line. Women call Adriamycin the "Red Devil." I'll bet those women would really enjoy sucking on a bright red popsicle during chemo! (The mere idea makes me nauseous, and I didn't even get Adriamycin.)

Oh my.....
I saw the title of this thread, and it brought me back two years when I was on Adriamyacin. I chewed on plain ice, then popsicles, and after a few rounds of this, I thought, "I'm tired of popsicles. I'll treat myself."
I got a strawberry smoothie. The next week I got a vanilla Frappucino from Sbux.To this day, I will not....no, I mean CAN NOT eat any of the above things without my tummy churning. Just writing about it gives me a very oogy feeling.
I'm sure it helped, but I still got wretched mouth sores. Ugh.
If mouth sores get too bad, you can get a script from the doc for a mouth swish, or get Biotine over the counter. I used both, and they helped tremendously.
Love and prayers, Deb

Deb, all I can say, is me too.
I can't even think about popsicles or machine-made ice cubes without my throat constricting.

I did it and now I am like you guys I cant even think of a red one or any kind it helped for a few days after chemo now its the 4th day after and I can feel the sore throat coming on but it will go away after a few days and I will be on my second to last chemo next time. I am so tired from this one its the 4th of 6 so I guess its building up all I have done is sleep all weekend hope I can make it into work this week for sure.Girls you guys are all amazing to have gone through all this I still say women take it on for sure and we deal with it pretty good I know you guys have for sure and your words are better than any councelor or doctor or close freind they have no clue like you ladies do.
Thanks for all your kind words

Although I never got nauseous during the chemo itself or even after...I could hear an ice machine release ice and I would heave ..big time. It took a long time for me to have ice chips in anything after chemo....ditto for the certain DOVE body wash I used during chemo....guilt by association !
PS I ate all types of popcicles It is the cold that constricts the vessels the color is irrelevant.
