You ever wonder how we sat through movies like this. I mean they were funny alright but so, so childish.
-
Interesting song, Nicki, hmmmm, I can't say it's really my style, but hey, to each his own. Your eggplant recipe sounds really yummy, though.
Shokk, your plastic bag story is so funny. I love the way we can share little quirky stories about our families and just enjoy. You have a great sense of humor.
Kathy, using plastic bags as rope is a great idea. I save them, too, and then finally have to throw away large amounts of them. I will have to try cutting and braiding, it might be a fun project.
My oldest is moving out today. It's such a bittersweet thing. He's very happy to think that he is able to take care of himself. It's such a good thing for him, but I'm going to miss him.
-
Blue, I just saw the picture--very funny. Movies sure have changed over the years.
-
Sheri: It has to be bittersweet. Ready to let go, but somehow you want to hang on to that little pinky of his. I know the song is sorta weird isnt it, but it is the #1 hot summer hit.
Kathy: thinking of plastic bags reminds me of making love chains out of gum wrappers when I was a kid. Gosh to be young again.
Shokk: I was thinking of M & M's and I think it was Sheri who mentioned the red ones meant you were hot. Now hot hot? or hot like hot flashes hot? You would think all I do is eat the red ones. I really hate to think you are coping with the lung condition in addition to breast cancer. Sometimes it is second hand smoke and sometimes its caused by a immune disorder. I didnt want to tell anyone I was quitting because I have failed everytime I have tried.
Blue: Abbott and Costello - I sure did love their movies as a kid. Seems silly now. My favorite was when they met frankenstein.
When I was young - 16 to be exact, I became an unwed mother. Couldnt go the abortion route - so I ended up having a son, and he was raised by my mom. I knew I had 3 choices. #1 - give him up for adoption. #2 -keep him but I was a kid myself and pretty irresponsible at that age. #3 - let my mom raise him. So the magic door was #3. I will never regret my choice though. Im bringing this up, because sometimes I wonder if breast cancer was because I had a child so long and got that shot to dry up the milk in your breasts.
Much better to give up a child than to be irresponsible about how you raise your childen is my motto.
OK - back to the pool.

Most of the newer music I hear is Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers, Micah loves them. My teenage son listens to heavy metal, but when we were traveling last week my dd and my friend and I could always agree on 80's stations. Most of those songs still seem to span the age gaps--Sarah is 20, Wendy is 33, and I'm 47. One song we would hear quite often during that trip was one of my alltime favorites--Come Sail Away by Styx. For awhile we caught a station playing a countdown of the top 20 disco songs of all time. That was kind of fun to listen to.
-
Styx!!! They are great and they are from Chicago.

Nicki, I like that song by Katy Perry too! I had heard her sing it recently (on So You Think You Can Dance, maybe?), and it was so catchy and I liked the saucy way she performed it (different than in the video). At first I thought it was weird, but then the longer the song went on, the more Iiked it.
Awww...Sheri I know it is hard to let your son go out on his own. Nothing is ever the same once the kids leave home, and we have to establish a new "normal"...like when we have bc and have to establish a new "normal". Didn't really mean to compare the two, though! If its any consolation, I let my DD go off to a math & science high school that was a 7 hr drive away (they board there)..and she was only 15 (cause she had skipped 8th grade)....and my DH had died unexpectantly the year before. Although that was extremely hard, and I could have def used her help on our farm, I knew she wanted to go, and was accepted, so I didn't think it was fair for her to lose her father and also her dreams. I knew once she went there, she would never move back home, and I was right--she even went to college in another state! (BTW she is now 30, w/ 3 kids!).Not the same, but trying to help you feel better, as I hope he at least is not moving toooo far from home! It will be hard the first few days, especially...just come here and let your feelings out! As far as making the plastic bag ropes, I would braid them and then braid the 3 braids together...made it real strong.

Sheri: Ask Sarah if she has heard of that song. Its playing everywhere. I love the older stations also. Love the song "on the radio."

Yeah Nicki, the Frankenstein one was funny. This one is Abbott & Costello meet the Keystone Cops.
I love music. All types. I can listen to classical one minute, switch to Moby the next and everything in between. There is a soft spot in my heart for Jim Morrison though, because not only was he a genius, but a great artist as well. He painted the canvas quite well with his words. Cool that he's buried in Pere Lachaise in Paris, with many other great artists. His final wish.
-
Nicki, thank you for sharing that. You made a responsible decision. Being Italian, I can understand your mom wanting to raise him. That scenerio has been played in many homes. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty about your decision. It was the best one out of the three. And NO, that's not why you got BC.
-
Sheri, what's you're secret.........I still have 2 living with me, 28 and 23.........hehehehehe! j/k
It will be tough the first few weeks but you all will adjust. Just think of all the extra room you'll have around the house,
-
Nicki,
I just read the last half of your post....don't know how I missed it the first time! That had to have been really hard to do, to give up your son for your mom to raise...but what a good, unselfish, choice you made. You did the right thing! I agree with Blue, don't really think that is why you got breast cancer. Enjoyed "On the Radio" too--good song choices! I love all the songs Donna Summer used to sing...those were dating years, so good memories!

Hi to all from the Tarheel state! Love all the pics and reading abt everyone. Could I join in? I am trying to get my new camera pics to do right. This was made late last night. Still working on the features...we planted that pecan tree that is in mid of pic...like 40 yrs ago as well as the pines and many others. We don't have that many hurricanes...knock on wood;but I remember the ones that did come with rains, winds and lots of tree limbs fell.
Hello to all...this is my idea of "Blue Heaven",Cherryl...when I am not in Chapel Hill!! Hi to you,Sheri,Nicki, shokk,Lisa,Bren and so many more names that I see on this thread.
Nicki,I think I have said the exact thing,to myself, except I had no childen and blamed myself and had other stuff. Congrats on losing the 10lbs! I played the songs and found me one for iTunes to buy.I read where Tony Snow lost his mother to colon cancer when Tony was 17. Tony had been vigilant abt health checks and always was very health-conscious even before the first bout with cancer. It just seems like it is so unfair to lose so many good folks...It just seems some people are more susceptible for unknown reasons,to me.
OK...thanks for allowing me to hijack the thread! I read and stay busy with lots of things these days. Thanks for letting me hang my hat here...neat thread!
Iris/bearlysane and bearydetermined to learn abt digital photoshooting;nice camera...small and 10mp...happy early b'day to me from me....ha!
I walk across this bridge real often as it adjoins our land and feels so good when the wind blows in my face...sailboats are moored near the right of the bridge pic.
-
Iris, it's so good to see you! It's been fun just rambling around in different types of conversations. What a nice bridge to walk across.
Thank you all for your encouraging words about my son. I know he'll be fine, but it's weird all the same. His new place is down town, right across the street from the hospital and within walking distance from his job. My dh and I are going to check in on him here in a few minutes and see how he is settling in.
Speaking of music, my dd and I would play "name that tune" while we were traveling and I got stuck on a song that I KNEW I knew. We were so frustrated. Finally, I texted my brother who lives in Utah. The song was "A Touch of Grey" by the Greatful Dead. He reassured me I had it right. It was a fun game to play to help the time pass.
-
Welcome Iris, don't think we've ever met. You can call me blue, or you can call me bluehoo, or you can call me mensa, or you can call me parkinsonslady HA HA! Sorry, got carried away for a minute there with an old Pat Paulsen skit. I love to laugh, even at my own expense. That's why I have no anger, just love to play. Some people just don't know how to channel anger.....Can anyone say "conniption fit".
Speaking of great bands, I just love Pearl Jam, this one in particular. No hidden message ladies, just in case you're wondering.
-
Sure thing Shokk, you troublemaker, you. Anytime after the 27th is fine with me. I'll be busy between now and then with my daughter's shower.
-
Hey Iris,
Good to see you, girl. I've missed you. I owe you a email, and I'll get around to that directly
Shokk, you ole right leanding science hating Texan, how are you? What's for dinner tonight? I'm thinking of pork chops, green beans, maybe some corn on the cob and cornbread, of course. Want to join me?
Nickster, sending hugs.
Hi to Blue/Mensa, Sheri, SoCalLisa and to the other Tarheels (give me a couple days to remember names). See you later.
Cherryl

Hey Cherryl you Tarheel you...............dinner sounds great............I like my pork chops stuff just like my men (not really sure what I mean by that)..........Iris so glad to see you........I don't think we have been introduced but I am the a$$ hole Texan that has no friends........you can just ask my friends the Moaner and Groaners................and I know who you are.......you are the bear lady........just too cute............hey Mensa we are going to have to meet when I am done with steroids and not so fat and mean.........I just keep losing friends because of it............maybe Chicago and meet up with Cherryl and Nickster................I hear Chicago is great in the Winter........between the hot flashes and the brisk cold of Chicago I should be just about right............ok hijackers going to get some dishes done..........the kidlets are with their Dad on the Texas Coast............talked to my daughter this morning and she said they have a great view of an Oil Refinery (not really)..............later gators and Tarheels.........Shokk

I took these pix over ten years ago with one of the first digital cameras

Hello there! I have been at the beach all day, and it was so very relaxing! I even went into the ocean, and the waves were pretty active, due to that tropical ... hurricane, or whatever it is.. Bertha. We will probably have some storms from it this week, but nothing to worry about, Lynn. I thought it would be scary living on the coast, but it really isn't. We live about 4 miles from the beach, so it's not like we have oceanfront property. We are above the 'flood plain', so it is ok.
I will have to go to the District Courthouse tomorrow, for a hearing about jury duty. Seems that I keep having dr. appt. for that week, and even though I cleared my calendar, that gyn onc appt will be on July 22nd, and I have to go to that, so jury duty will just have to live without me. I have a note from my regular onc, and I hope they will accept it, but the reason I have to go to this special hearing is because this happened on Friday, and now it's too late to just mail in my "excuse" letter. I will have to go to the courthouse tomorrow at 9:30am... The reason for the dr. appt., as some of you know, is that I had a trans vaginal u/s and my endometrial stripe is THICK!, but it is probably because of the Tamoxifen. But, I am not really in the mood for jury duty, so I hope they will understand.
Everyone have a great week!

SoCal, when do we move in?
Harley, I had one of those done and they found a polyp (benign). I will be having surgery in early August to have it removed and while I'm there, out come the ovaries. OUCH!
-
Lisa, what gorgeous pictures! Believe it or not, I've never been in the Biltmore House even though I lived near it for years...you never see the attractions nearby, right? BTW, didn't you say awhile back on an earlier thread that your husband had been stationed in Sasebo?
Re: music...my ipod is full of oldies, with a few new things thrown in. I love John Mayer, and also Taylor Swift. Any country music fans? I like the newer crossover-type stuff, but not so much the old really twangy stuff.
Love this thread...you never know what you're going to read here. :-)

Hi everyone
BOY you guys are chatty
I have been gone since Thursday night, had a long weekend away with my DH. We had a wonderful time, but now I am WAY behind here at home. I will try and read back and catch up, but hope everyone had a great weekend.
Big hugs
Deb C

Another Tarheel gal here.
Lisa, I live about 75 miles from Asheville and Biltmore house. Have been there several times. You should see it decorated at Christmas and the Gingerbread house. They have opened more of the rooms and added a winery there now too. Not sure how long ago you visited. Believe the other picture is of Linville gorge - not far from me either.
You gals crack me up - haven't been home to long and I'm so tired. Just wanted to comment on Lisa's pictures and say hi to my other Tarheels!!

Shokk, If you're really interested in finding some new friends, I may be able to help. I try to reach out to the lonely and down trodden and offer friendship. I'll send you an application. Get it in quickly, as I have a definite quota of Texas right leaning folks that I'll accept.
Hey, Brenda. Welcome home. Get some rest and we'll talk tomorrow.
Cherryl
-
Blue,,I say lets move right on in...!!!
Brenda..how cool to live so close there to the Biltmore ..I have also been to alot of the other "mansions" but the Biltmore is very special...the Hearst Castle looks like they got the stuff at a garage sale in comparison..I would love to see it at Christmas sometime...they were setting up for it when we were there...the winery was just opened I think..
Deb..so nice you got away for a fun weekend..your hubby sounds like a great guy..I still remember the pix of Hawaii..
Lynn...My husbands ship that had been homeported up a river in country Vietnam went to Sasebo for repairs in 1971..I was pregnant with my second son at the time but found a sitter for my oldest and went to join him for three weeks..we stayed in the O club on base and had a wonderful time..he ordered the captains gig to take all the visiting wives on tours of the beautiful bay..we ate up at the top of the hill in a tree trunk and had the best tempura in the middle of town ..I don't think the owners had ever had Americans there to eat before..One of the wives of a local Japanese contractor took my husband and I for a fantastic tour around the area ( she is one who recommended the tempura restaurant)..then we went up to Kyoto, and Nara...for a few days...I really had a wonderful time..even had a hotsi bath with my DH...the lady was a little hesitant giving me a massage when I was six months pregnant...
Harley...good luck with the jury stuff...I got out of it because I had chronic diarhhea...they did not want anything to do with that in the jury room!!!

Good Morning I think! Im moving a bit slow this morning - first day back to work. Im sure gonna miss my computer time - just had to stop by and say hello. I guess Im ready. I have new gym shoes, a nice tan, Im thinner, and I wont smell of cigarette smoke! The new me!
Even though Im a yankee girl, I wanna be a Tarheel!
Blue: I like all kinds of music also. Although I favor the 60's and 70's. Your right about Jim Morrison. It wasnt just his music, it was his words. I have to tell you everytime I see your avatar I get a little lightheaded. He was so darn cute!
Kathy: Thank you for those kind words. I have learned to live with my choice, I feel that I made the best one I could. Wish sometimes I could turn back time though, I missed out on alotl BTW, the first time I head it was on "I think you can dance." Thats too funny. So my first thought was - hmm I dont know if I like it or not. Sometimes Im that way with music. I pulled it up on youtube and now I love the song. For some odd reason I was watching MTV the other day which is something I havent done in years and I saw her singing that song again. Im hooked now.
SoCal: Once again, those are some beautiful pictures. Your giving me a real feel of how North Carolina looks and what Im missing out on. I swear I could name a place and you will not only have been there, but you will have a picture lol. How about Martha's Vineyard? I was watching the news and they have a white shark in their waters. Wondering when I get home tonight if I will see a picture of it from you.
Shokk: Chicago in the winter? Are you crazy girl? I lived in MO for about 6 weeks when I was first married. Way too many wasps - sometimes I couldnt get into the apartment they were so bad. That was our short stint in trying to live away from where we were raised. We quickly moved back to Illinois because we were just too far away from our families.
Iris: Gosh darn it, a big hello to you. What a nice surprise to see an old friend this morning. I think you might have made my day despite my vacation being over! I have to tell ya it felt good to mention some of my fears about how I got breast cancer. The shot to dry up milk has long prayed on my mind and Ive never mentioned it before. I hears Tony Snow lost his mother when he was young, but I didnt realize how young. I loved the story behind the pecan tree and the picture of your bridge is awesome. I would love to have a bridge like that near us here in Illinois. Its so good to see you, Im giggling.
Sheri: The place where your son chose to live sounds really great. I know you have mixed feelings, but can also sense your feeling of pride.
Cherryl: I will take all the hugs I can get from you. There is something very spiritual about them. Your dinner sounded great. And if your inviting Shokk, then you will have to invite me lol.
Harley: Good luck with your trip today. Not fair I say, that you should have to be worrying about jury duty while still going through more treatment and fears. Im glad you had fun at the ocean yesterday. I could almost hear those active waves being stirred up by Hurricane Bertha. I bet the ocean is really pretty at times like that. Living 4 miles from the beach is awesome.
Lynn: Im woth you. I like all kinds of music. Jazz, blues, country, oldies but goodies, and some of the newer stuff too. I can usually tell if I like something when I find myself singing it the whole day! Your right about this thread. Its fun.
DebC: So glad you had a wonderful time with your husband the week-end. YOU deserve it. I was a little worried about you because the news said a volcano had erupted in Anchorage and was hoping that wasnt near you.
Brenda: A big hello to you. Im thinking we should call this the tarheel thread lol.
A big hello to anyone I missed. Hoping more and more of you join as this thread grows. You dont have to talk to everyone individually like I do - thats just my style. Just drop in and Hijack - as you can see we love talking about everything and anything.
Im finding it really interesting that 4 of us are celebrating our 40th highschool reunions this year. Iris, Cherryl, Sheila, and me. Its a small world in the big scope of things.
Hijack! Working is stressful and it takes alot out of a person both physically and emotionally. Mine job not only involves evaluating people for rehab, it involves teaching medical professionals about abuse. Child abuse and elder abuse - believe it or not, its around us everyday. I also see alot of children being abusive to their parents. It makes me feel good whenever I can intervene in these situations. But gosh darn, it makes me want to smoke. NOT!
Have a wonderful day. Time to hit the showers.

Hi, was offline this weekend and come back. AlaskaDeb was right. This is a chatty group.
Chemosabi, congrats on your smoking. I am going to try it again. I had quit before my lumpectomy and picked it back up when I was dx. STUPID. Then quit again and went back when Taxotere got so bad. Then quit again and picked back up after my expander surgery. I think the Lortab is making me smoke more. Gotta get out of pain and get off this drug. Anyway, I got an rx for Wellbutrin and have my quit date set for next Monday. I have developed a congestive cough and that scares me. I got an upper respiratory infection in June and it never cleared up. Seems to be getting worse. Of course, I immediately think Lung Mets. When I quit, I would go through a bag a creme savers a day. Seems like I constantly had to have something in my mouth. I also became a gum smacker blowing bubbles and driving everyone crazy. I find when I am with a bunch of smokers, it is easier not to smoke. Computer and driving are the worst.
Great pix barelysane, and Lisa. Barelysane, you must live near the ocean? I miss the ocean. I grew up about 1 mile from the beach in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I enjoy Tennessee and the rolling hills and really enjoy the fall colors which we did not get on the coast. We have been fortunate to be traveling the US before BC and I do have to say, we live in a very beautiful country. Oregon and Arizona are really beautiful. So is New Hampshire and Washington State. Hell, every place we have been is beautiful.
Enjoy the day, hope to get a lot done today.
Debbie
