Harley, here in the foothills (north of Hickory) the storms seemed to blow around us until today, we have had rain for an hour !!! previous days I could hear the thunder and see the black clouds but they would only give up a drop or two of rain. When it started raining, I set a large cup outside the office door to catch the rain water to water my indoor plants and it filled up in 10 minutes. When I was on the tamox I also had problems sleeping. I found that playing relaxing cd's it helped me to sleep

I'm glad to see this thread going again. I don't post here as much lately, I've had a super busy summer. I am glad to see some old friends, though. Deb, how's chemo going? I remember the sock puppets, I used to laugh so hard! My family thought I was psycho.
Nicki, glad you got your ihop. Sige, your cruise to Alaska sounds like a blast.
-
Hey Sheri...nice to see you again!
-
So I have been just puzting around enjoying my day off. Went swimming, it got cloudy and teased us with rain - but not a drop. Went to work in my garden - yes thats my new fancy term for "pulling weeds." I have this pretty small bush that has lavender ball flowers on it. Gardener that I am, dont know the name. Anyways about 4 weeks ago when I pulled weeds from under there I was attacked by the monster mosquitos! Today, when Im done weeding, I come inside all itchy and tell my husband I feeling itchy just thinking about what happened to me last time. Well I just counted them 6 bites on my right lower leg! Those dang weeds can grow under that bush from now on! Whose gonna see them anyways?
I have 10 tomatoes on my plants now. I have 3 plants. My plum plants has 6 tomatoes. Yes gardener that I am, I get excited over 6 tomatoes. Italian mama with her plants in planters on the patio lol.
SoCal: Oh Im laughing here cause I think your Italian grandfather would be smiling at my tomato plants. This new deli also has canoli cake you can buy by the slice. Of course I dont want to go back to work not fitting into my clothing - next time! Its funny, the biggest argument I had with my mother when I got married was over the wedding cake. She wanted traditional canoli filling. I wanted chocolate. She won! Except for the very top layer. That was chocolate.
Harley: Even though I joked about it a bit, the truth be said, I was upset this morning. Being in the sun like that, skin cancer of course is the first thing that came to mind. Founds some irregular new "age spots" on my arms and they were irregular in shape. So Im looking at them and complaining about it - of course hsuband thinks I over cancer everything. But dang -Skin cancer definitely crossed my mind. I think I will stick to the 20 minutes of sunshine everyday. Get a dose of vitamin D and not put myself at risk. Sounds pretty where you live. Oh about not sleeping, I havent found anything natural that helps me. I wake up frequently during the night too, sometimes hot flashes sometimes not. Anyways, I take .5 mg of Xanax at night. That has helped me sleep. Got an old wives tale idea about hot flashes, but Ill tell you that another day.
Vickie: That IHOP was so gosh darn good. I have had my fill of it now. Tomorrow back to making our own breakfasts!
Sheila: The description of your weather is what seems to be happening here. Its cloudy, got thunder and it rained for maybe 3 seconds! I bet living in the foothills is beautiful. Illinois is flat flat flat. Although we do have Lake Michigan. But then you have the whole Atlantic Ocean!
Sheri and Sige: OMG I forgot all about the sock puppets. We found so many different pictures to post. That really was funny. You both just made me smile.
Well I hear thunder, I see lightening - so guess I will turn the computer off and go do some first aid to my mosquito wounds. See ya later.

The bush with the lavender flowers is probably a hydrangea bush. My sister has one and she just lets it grow. Every two or 3 yrs she attacks it with the big trimmers in the fall and cuts it down to 2 ft off the ground and it comes back the next year. Her dog loves to lay under it, because it is shady. Try putting a fabric softner sheet in your pocket before you go out to weed again, the smell is supposed to keep the mosquitos away.
Good luck on your tomato plants. My dad and sister have the green thumb, I am lucky that I have kept several plants from the various planters I got last year during my recovery from surgery still alive, sickly looking, but still alive.
Sheila
-
Hey Nicki ... I found you!
Here are the pics of my zinnias!! I grew them from seeds. They're the giant, jewel colored variety.
And my tomatoes ...
And my front porch !!
And ... Mr. Tim wants me to pick blackberries and make him a pie. I don't think sooooo. We've got 3 acres of blackberries and my path has disappeared. God only knows what's down in those fields!!! Plus, even if I did get down there ... I don't like blackberries ... they're furry.
-
Sheila: Yep, thats exactly what it is. A hydrangea bush. Its 2 years old and has gotten bigger each year. I planted snap dragons next to it and had to move them yesterday because it totally took up all their space. Im gonna try the fabric softener sheet - that is if I ever pull weeds there again. Now when its comes to having a green thumb - I dont have one either. I guess thats why I get excited over little things growing. All the planters that have been given to me - they just fade away. Im not good with plants inside at all - and if its not me destroying them its my cat Wesley. He like to eat plants, flowers, herbs!
I think DebC had a remedy that involved flat beer too! Too bad my husband drinks it all and doesnt leave any to go flat.
Bren: OMG those flowers are so pretty and your planted them from seeds? Coool! Are they perennials? I got over zealous yesterday and accidently pulled out the bulb from my hyacinth. Shook my head and went oh well - put it right back in the dirt. Then marked it so I dont do that again. Hairy Blackberries? OMG Im laughing my arse off picturing those hairy berries marching up to your door! Whenever I go into wooded areas that dont have clear paths I think of tics. Yucky tics. So do you not eat raspberries either cause they are hairy? And BTW if I took a picture of my tomatos you would all laugh. They are about 1 inch big. They a big babies!
OK - gotta run. Thunder storm ahead.

Chemosabi, I am so jealous. I LOVE pancakes and my husband went one Saturday 2 weeks ago and did not even think to ask me. Seems if I want 'em I have to make 'em. So I guess I won't be getting any. My favorites are the whole grain kind with fried apples on top. I don't think they are that healthy though.
I was in Food Lion today and a woman had a shirt on that read "Stressed Out and No one to Choke". I read her shirt and smiled and said "Do you want my whole list or just the top ten?" She looked at me like I was crazy? I said "Your shirt" and she actually turned her back on me! Now why would you wear a shirt like that and not expect to get comments?
Hot here, but we have had 2 days of rain, glorious rain this week. Our county is in a extreme severe drought.
Hi Harley, I grew up near Charleston, SC. I remember driving to Myrtle Beach to Party. We were about 90 minutes away. I spent all my summers on the beach. I miss the beach.
We have a mockingbird in our tree that is attacking my cats even on the porch. The baby jumped out the other day and I had to round up the cats and bring them in. I saw him the next day and he was flying so I hope he made it.
Enjoy the afternoon ladies.
Debbie

Look out Bren...Gonna come stay with you...love the porch!
Debbie...what a crappy thing for that woman to do. I really have no patience for rude people anymore. I tend to get rude right back!
-
Debbie: I had to look up Mocking Bird because it brings several things to mind. Of course from school I remember reading "To Kill A Mocking Bird." Went to Catholic grade school and the nuns thought it was to mature for me. (I had 2 older sisters in high school). So when your in 7th grade you think is dirty lol. But I did read that book several times throughout my life. Anyways I found out that Mocking Birds do not come to Illinois. Thats why I dont know much about them. It said they are very preditorial especially by their nests - which they like to build in thick trees and bushes nears homes! If someone comes to its nest it gets very protective, even sending out a call to have other neighboring Mocking Birds come help them. Its says they will attack both animals and cats. So your poor kitties. But then also, that poor baby Mocking Bird. When I read about the Tshirt I laughed outloud. OMG - I would have said something for sure. Have people lost their sense of humor or what? Now if that was me wearing that Tshirt and you came up to me and said what you said - we would have both been standing their laughing and telling other funny things for at least 5 minutes.
Vickie: This is about how rude I could picture you getting with someone. Stomping your foot mad lol.
Someone mentioned rain and what it reminded them of. Harley, I think it was you talking about the sound of rain at night and how it helps you sleep. I love the sound of rain at night too. A summer thunderstorm is wonderful. I snicker when I think about what rain means when writing an English composition. Something which I hated all my life. Science and Math I loved. English and History (sorry Sheri) I hated. I hate the bad storms, ya know the ones that cause flooding and tornados. But a nice summer storm, one where you could go out in the rain and play. That sounds like fun.
Have a great evening. Time to go play in the rain.

Bren, I am coming to your house too! I have managed to get a planter of small flowers to grow on my porch, but it looks good next to the pathetic rose bush that I want to cut down but my hubby wants to keep it. It has maybe 5 canes climbing a metal trellis with 7 or 8 leaves on each cane and struggles to bloom.
About the hummingbirds and my hubby, before he started driving truck, he would open the front door and watch tv from the porch while he smoked (no smoking in the house). He and the hummers actually became friends, after they realized that he would not hurt them, they would hover around his head or fly just across the top on their way to the feeders. One time one even hovered in front of his face and they were nose to beak for a few minutes.
We have mocking birds in our trees and they can make such a rucus. they have nested in the dogwood tree over the driveway where I park the car.
It rained this afternoon here for almost 2 hours! I don't have a gage out so I don't know how much it actually rained but I loved seeing every drop.

Harley, that was my favorite book too! I read it when I was 11 and several times since. Did you know the little white haired boy was modeled after Truman Capote who is my favorite author.

Hello Hijackers........Bren you have to watch out for blackberry groves.........rattlesnakes love to hang out there.............not sure if they are drawn to the actual blackberries or to the smell..........and girls what is the state bird of Texas.........the Mockingbird........we have them everywhere............the cats are afraid of them and now they chase the squirrels everywhere..............but I love them............I have my Mockingbird songs down........I talk to them all the time in their language.....ha............Bren your front porch looks like a perfect place to party.............Nickster my youngest daughter lovesssssssss I-HOP..........the last time we went the waiter was so smitten with her..........she just order pancakes and eggs.........he ended up bringing her hash browns, fruit bowel, 3 hot chocolates...........she takes about 3 bites of every thing..........she had about 5 plates surrounding her...........we could not stop laughing........didn't charge us for any of it..........I need to take her with me when I go grocery shopping.......ok guys later gators...........Shokk
-
Now I'm hungry with all this pancake talk .... somebody come and get me. The nearest I-HOP is in Roanoke ... only an hour away. I'll buy if somebody will fly!
PS - I love Robert Mitchum in the movie.
-
We don't have an ihop here, either. My favorite ihop memories are the year my youngest, Micah, was born. I semi-retired from teaching and my dh and I would take the baby and go to ihop while the other kids were in school. That was a nice time.
Our best pancakes are at Cracker Barrel, my favorite place to eat. We will go there tomorrow for Micah's birthday. He turns 8, how time flies.
Bren, I love your front porch, I love sitting on the front porch in the evenings and yours is so pretty. The most gardening I did this year was put a hanging basket out on my front porch--woohoo!
-
The closest I-hop or Cracker Barrel is 30 minutes away from me and boy do those pancakes taste good from either place!
-
Well Im going to enjoy my last day of vacation. Its sunny, high 90's and humid, so the only way I will exist is playing in my pool all day. Then its back to working like a jerkin!
Sheila: What a sweet story about your husband and the hummingbirds. I always love it when a wild bird or animal befriends a human. Its a magical thing.
Debbie: Yes I tend to fancy Truman Capote myself.
Shokk: RATTLESNAKES? OMG! dont think of them much living here in Illinois. I mean we have water moccasins but this girl would never get close to swimming in a river. Funny the hummingbird is your State bird. Ours is the Cardinal - at least they sing pretty. So I believe the difference between your daughter and myself besides age is? I would have cleaned everything off all of those 6 plates sitting in front of me. 3 bites? Hahaha, yesterday I almost licked the blueberry sauce off the plate!
Bren: Heck go to the store, buy some blueberries and make your Mr. a blueberry pie. No snakes in the stores - at least I dont think there are. Ewwwww! I hate snakes. Hope with your hunger you didnt go eat some croutons!
Sheri: When I was a young girl we used to have Cracker Barrels here, but not anymore. So Mich will be 8 years old today. Happy Birthday to your dear little boy. Are you doing anything special with him today?
Today I plan on being a good girl. No pancakes for me. We went to the grocery store after the pancakes and I was so full, I hardly bought any junk. I got myself an eggplant and zucchini and Im gonna cook them both up today Italian style. Thats what I will be munching on all day.
OK - old wives tale for hot flashes. When you wake up with a hotflash go to the bathroom and pea even if you dont feel like. Happened twice to me last night and believe it or not it worked!
Always love hearing old wives tales on how to treat certain medical things!
Now its out to the patio with a cup of coffee and just enjoy the beauty of nature. BBL

I almost forgot. Hello my friend, you know who you are and this picture is just for you.
Nicki

Nikki, Shokk said that the state bird of Texas is the mockingbird not the hummingbird! Here in NC the state bird is also the cardinal.
I wish I was good and would stop eating junk food. My hubby just called and said he should be home tonight about 8 or 9, looks like late supper at Coffee House for me (open 24 - 7), not too bad with the Chopped Steak dinner (chopped steak with grilled onions, French fries, salad and drink for 6.00)

I'm so happy this thread is back!
I love To Kill a Mockingbird, hydrangea bushes (there are lots in Japan), home-grown tomatoes (especially this summer, w/ the tomato scare), pancakes, and rain at night. I feel right at home!
I'm a Southern girl--born in Winston-Salem and spent four years in Asheville, which I think is one of the most gorgeous places on earth. Then we moved to Jacksonville, FL, which is laughingly referred to as South Georgia. I really do love the South, and I think Harper Lee did such a great job of capturing the way things were...the good, the bad, and the ugly. One of my favorite books and movies--LOVE Gregory Peck! Also one of the very few movies that was (almost) as good as the book. That list is awfully short--usually Hollywood ruins books. Anybody have a book/movie combo you loved?
Speaking of the South, I'm having barbecue tonight at the only authentic place I've found in NY. I'll have the ribs--I can't resist, even if they're a heart attack on a plate. Until recently, most NY barbecue consisted of meat with sauce smeared on it--such an affront to real pit barbecue. Even better--next week my sister and I are headed to GA and AL to see family. I hope to get my fill of good Southern eats!

Lynn, I live 75 miles from Asheville towards Boone on HWY 321, I lived several years in Lexington, NC BBQ city (Every block seems to have an authentic pit bbq restraunt on it.), and Statesville before moving to Hudson. Although I was born in Ohio, I moved to the south when I was early teenager. I love the south and won't move back north.
Sheila

Lynn, I lived in Japan from 6-10 years old. I loved it. The worst BBQ Sandwich I ever had was at the Goldenburo in Leadville Co. It was oscar meyer ham w/ BBQ sauce poured on top! Uugghhh!
Bren, love your front porch. I cannot do container gardening here. It is too hot and dry. Here is my garden pix.
Behind the Gazebo are the blackberry bushes. It is very wild and we have had a problem with Thistle this year.
-
Quick pop in before I jump in the pool
Sheila: Oh goodness, Im laughing because I meant to say Mockingbird, but I had Hummingbird on my mind. Cant trust me when I havent had all my mornng coffee.
Lynn: Yummy! That BBQ sounds great. I love BBQ ribs too. But tonight, I will make eggplant parmesan with fresh melted mozzarella on top.
BBL its hot hot hot here. Even though Im a Northern girl, I do have friends that consider me a Maggie lol
Nicki

I think I'm going to do a pork butt after all this talk of bbq. I just put a pork butt in the crock pot with a couple of bottles of bbq sauce over night on low. Pull it apart with a fork, put on a bun and yum!
I never read To Kill a Mockingbird, but a year and a half ago I was in a community theater production. It is a great story. I played the cranky old lady, Mrs. Debose. Definitely not type casting, at least I hope not!

Ha haaaa!!!! I have some great news to share!
I have a friend who was in a very serious car accident 2 1/2 weeks ago. His injuries included a jaw broken in two places, his leg 95% severed below the knee, 3 broken ribs, 2 bad breaks in his arm, a collapsed lung and damaged aorta. He was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital where his leg was completely amputed, they took nerves out of his remaining foot to replace those that were destroyed in his arm, they performed an operation on his arm and after fluid build up in his lungs, were combatting an infection. He has been on high doses of morphine and they have put him in an induced coma so he can heal. A couple of days ago, they had to remove the breathing tube and give him a traecheotomy. They recently started taking him off of the drugs that kept him sleeping and now...
HE WOKE UP LAST NIGHT!!! He was really out of it, but his wife and he have been able to communicate by playing 20 questions...he mouthed he loved her, asked about the taxi (he was driving the taxi) and said "I'll be okay". Thank the Goddess!! I am thrilled to bits.
On a more personal note, my weight topped at 237 lbs. after my bc dx...I am now at 200 and still losing...WOO HOOOO for me!!!!
Hope everyone has a good day, weekend, have some ribs for me!!
Hugs
Peggy
This definitely warrants the HAPPY PRANCE...

Hi Nikki
You mentioned egg plant??? How do you prepare it?
This thread is so much fun!!!!!
I think I am the only "out west" girl here!!!!!
It is hot and dry here, someone PLEASE send me some rain!!!
It is green pea harvest here right now and then in a couple more weeks it will be wheat harvest....I love to watch the tall, golden yellow wheat sway in the breeze.....and I love the smell of the green pea harvest....of course the added bonus of fresh peas isnt a bad thing either
Well guess Im better stop playing around this morning and really do some work
I have been here since 7 a.m. and it is now almost 10, but have I gotten anything accomplished???? HECK NO, ITS FRIDAY AND I DONT WANNA BE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will check back a little later....have a great day everyone
Jule
-
Debbie-Im sorry I forgot earlier but your pictures of your area are fabulous!!!!
Peggy-Congrads on your friends waking and will keep him and his family in my thoughts for a promising recovery!!!
Ive been reading past posts here and now you ladies have made me hungry!!!!!! First all the talk of pancakes, then egg plant, zucchini and now bbq!!!!
Im trying to eat healthy to shed some pounds but I absolutely love blueberry crepes and they are sounding SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yummy right now....bad thing is: I live in Podunk NOWHERE and there isnt anywhere for me to get them (well, maybe thats not a bad thing!!!)....but there is a wonderful bakery up the street from my office that makes a "melt in the mouth" blueberry coffee cake.......hmmmmmmm, think I can eat it now and call it desert for later after dinner?????
Gotta run, still trying to work...Ya right, ok!!!!!!! Can we say, Jule would rather be home relaxing???? Im seriouly thinking of going home early....if I do that Im outta here at 11 a.m.
See ya
-
Crap, I forgot the original question......
In one of the previuous posts you all were talking about gardening and flowers....someone said something about weeds and dryer sheets????? Please explain!!!!!! I have tons of flower beds and would love new hints/ideas on keeping weeds out!!!!
Thanks
Jule
-
Oh for pete's sake ... it was Gregory Peck and not Robert Mitchum ... thanks for setting me straight!!! They're both the strong silent type.
Beautiful garden and gazebo!!
Nicki - I'm not making any pies .... geez.
-
Jule, life is too short . . . eat dessert first! I go with getting the coffee cake now.
edited - jule the dryer sheet is supposed to keep mosquitos away if you put it in your pocket when weeding the garden.
I make a mean pulled BBQ venison sandwich my dh loves to call Bambi-Q. I perfected the recipe when he was laid off and his cousin offered all the venison I wanted. The best way to eat it is the southern way with red slaw and dill pickles on the sandwich.
Dh just called with an update, it will be coffee house for supper.
Peggy, congrats on your friend's recovery so far, praying for full recovery soon.
got to get back to work also,
Sheila
