BIOTIN II
Comments
-
My hair grew back as thick and full as ever after chemo, and curly now.
About a year ago, after 2 years on Femara, I noticed a LOT of hair in my brush.Next I noticed a LOT of hair in the bathtub drain. And a LOT of hair on the bathroom floor.
I thought it was because I had such"big" hair.I thought I was doing a summer shed.I thought all sorts of denial-y things.Until I found a receding of one side of my hairline.EEEK!
So the Biotin Girls came to my rescue.
I'd never heard of Biotin.
I took it.
IT WORKED!
W/in a few weeks, no more hair all around.
And the receding hairline grew in.
Biotin ROCKS!
So recently, hello? I find the hairy brush, the bathtub mess ,yadda yadda. All over again.I'm still taking the Biotin.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Instinctively, I doubled my dose.
And yessss! My brush isnt loaded every time I brush my wild hair.
But hair, apparantly, has been growing back all this time, because my head is surrounded with an aureole of very short hairs!
So weird.
I'm wondering if I was just "blowing my coat", like a dog.So I could grow a nice heavy winter coat.
Maybe I dont need double Biotin.Maybe it will turn me into a huge bear, or a Yeti.
Anybody had a similar experience, or any thoughts? Thanks!
PS-What a great heading for a book about bc:
Are you overcompensating for your AI shedding? How to tell you're turning into a Yeti.
-
Joan,
thank you for the big grin on my face! I just love you for it
I think you should go for it...write the book!!!
I doubled my dose too after 17 months on Femara, have fine hairs under the real hair and in the receding hairline too....no Yeti yet
and probably not going there anytime soon.....I'm afraid it's falling out if I stop or stay on single dose.....
God Bless

{{{Calico}}}, THANK YOU! You have had the exact experience, and YAY!No Yeti!!!.
You rock!
hugs, j
-
Joan,
I go on and off biotin. When I see no loose hairs I stop, and if I see some start up again, I start up again. I figured I found a good thing and I don't want my body to get use to it and it starts taking it for granted. I don't know if that will work for you.

What is the 'regular' dosage that you all are taking?
And what's a Yeti?
~Marin
-
Marin,
Do you remember 'Harry and the Hendersons'? Harry was a Yeti, another name for Big Foot and I don't mean my husband!
Sheila
-
Marin,
I take a light dosage, just 2 pills at 300 mcg each. I'm not trying to grow hair, just keep what I got, and what I use to see and what I'm seeing now in shedding is hardly nothing.
-
I take 2000mcg of Biotin. I do think it helps but I do still see the hair on the brush and the drain. These damn AI's. It stinks. They help us on the one hand and on the other side affects are a nightmare.

Marin, my "regular dosage "of biotin is a capsule of 1,000 mcg NOW biotin.
When I started going bald on that, I went right to 2 caps, 2thousand mcg.
Then read Rosemary who only takes Biotin as needed. And went back to my 1K dose.Things are OK so far.
My hair is way too "big".I wouldnt mind it thinning out at all.But cant handle the male-pattern bald spots.

Is there a prefered brand of Biotin everyone uses.
Elizabeth

I'm currently buying mine from Vitamin World, but have also used Country Life, Earth Fare and Whole Foods brands. It's a little difficult finding biotin in the 5mg dosage, so I buy it where I can, as long as its a reputable brand.

Thanks for the input. How long did it take to see a difference. I know most things can take up to three months to notice a difference. Did anyone notice an improvement in their nails?
Elizabeth
-
Auntbiz,
my prefered brand is Country Life because it has a high dose of 5 mg.
-
Elizabeth...It actually took me about 4-6 months before I noticed a significant difference in my hair growth and volume, but this level has been maintained for quite a while since then. As for nails, I can't report on that because I made the huge mistake of applying my own false nails with that heavy glue and it ruined every single finger nail I have. that was well over a year ago and my nails are still troublesome. But if anything can help, I'm convinced it would be biotin.

Thanks for your reply. I think I was just born with horrible nails, although my mom is 83 and her nails are very hard and strong.

I use ProCaps Healthy Hair, Skin and Nails, that I buy from HSN. But they guarantee that the product actually contain what they say it does, and Consumer Reports has scared me about supplements.
This contains 3 mgs of Biotin, Organic sulfur, and a little calcium, It does help - my nails are better than they've ever been - still not wonderful, but at least they don't split and crack all over the place.
-
Thanks to all you sisters - just yesterday I posted a question on hairloss under a different index and today checked out biotin and found you-all. I going to try it immediately, my hair is so thin it is splitting apart and my scalp is very visible. I'm going to start biotin but question what is a good starting dose?
-
Janie...I'd say start with 1,000 mcg (1 mg) and slowly build up to 5,000 (5 mg). It does take a few months to see a significant difference, but I know of no one who has tried it (and didn't have active problems causing the loss...like they're still doing chemo!) who hasn't had hair growth and thickening. Good luck!

Its Janie again, thanksfor all your responses and advice, started biotin yesterday and have high hopes, wish the onc would take this more seriously, seem to have an attitude of oh yes, get a wig, I know things could be worse but to go thru this second time, and after a bi lateral mastec. I perhaps take things too dramatically, thats me drama queen Janie. Talk to you again.

Hi All:
I recently posted this elsewhere but thought I'd bump up this thread for all who are currently "hairless" (and thus frustrated!!!).
My healthfood store owner told me that one needs to take biotin along with silica, as they work best together. I take 2000 mcg (2 mg) of biotin along with 4.7 mg of silica. Biotin brand is Canadian (NOW), and silica brand is Flora (also Canadian).
Hair is definitely growing (last tx was mid-July and I'm on Femara), and where I really see an improvement is in my nails - growing like crazy and very strong.
Linda
