I have a friend who is 26 and was just diagnosed. She's sort of estranged from her family and is really having a hard time of things lately - dealing with all the doc visits, surgeries, pending chemo, etc. She feels really alone right now and I don't know how to help her since I am three hours away and have only gotten down there once so far...

Anyone in the area that might be willing to at least exchange emails with her?

Felicia you can give her my email address and phone number. I've was estranged from my family for 20 years before an aunt found me on the internet 2 years after my diagnosis. I did breast cancer by myself too so I'm sure I can help.

    Felicia --

I just found this thread after posting on a similar thread you started in the Chemo forum.

HUP has really good counseling services.  Your friend could check out the following websites:

    http://penncancer.org/subpage.cfm?s=1&ss=54

I looked, but didn't find a specific support group for young people (under 30) going through cancer, but I know that one existed when I was going through chemo last year. You might try to contact the counseling services at the Abramson Cancer Center to see if there is something that isn't yet on their web site. They also sponsor LGFB seminars, which is another way for her to connect with others going through chemo at the same time.

There used to be semi-regular meetings of the Philly-area bco crowd, but we were on the older side, with the youngest in her mid 40s and most of us in our early to mid 50s.

    Hi Felicia -

I live in Philly, am 29 and was just diagnosed. I don't have much knowledge yet as I'm still wading through all the info and tests etc., but I'd be happy to be there for support for your friend!

Hi Felicia, so sorry to hear of your friend going this.....I would be more than happy to help with anything I can.  I can't imagine not having family around to help her deal with this.  Even though you are not close in distance, please make sure you continue to support her with phone calls, e-mails, etc. Try to convince her she needs to stay strong and remain positive.....it is so important!  My experience with HUP was wonderful!  My surgeon and her staff were great.  Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions and please let your friend know I will be willing to talk to her if she needs any guidance or a shoulder to lean on. I am in the South Jersey area....only 15 minutes from Philly.
