Nervous!!! Help

I get my first rad treatment in 4 hours. I am not worried about the treatment itself, but came down with a bad cold on Saturday (figures, this is despite taking tons of Vit C and trying to build up my immune system). I also just had my last excision one week ago. I took the steri strip tape off today and there was some very minor bleeding and the skin is looking fragile.

I feel like I'm going into rads all beaten and battered and it scares me a little. Also, the rad onc told me on Friday, the day they did the mapping..."oh gee, I just thought of this, you had surgery so recently that starting radiation this early may cause your breast tissue to pull apart where you had surgery, but this won't happen until 3 weeks into rad and it may cause great difficulty with your healing". I am SURE she was trying to scare me...that's a whole different story which involves her lovely ego.

Any words of encouragement. Has anyone had problems with their breast tissue separating from radiation? Or has anyone else gone through rad so quickly after an excision? Thanks !!!

bfkh2t - how long ago did you have your surgery? They would not even schedule me for rads until I was 4 weeks out from surgery (bilateral mastectomy). I went through 33 rad treatments and had no problems with the surgery being affected, just pretty painful burning the last 2 or 3 rads.

Gosh that sounds way to early to have rads after an excision. I would cancel until your cold at least goes away. I was told to wait at least 4 weeks after my chemo, and my surgury was done in June, rads began in November. I would get a second opinion on the rads. I went into a clincal trial and had rapid rads which was so much better than 33 and then boosts. I ended up getting 16 rads with the rapid rads and I burned but not as badly as what I've read other women had. If you don't cancel make sure you have the clear aloe vera gel, or aquaphor and apply it often. I wish you the best but please call and ask them why so soon after surgury. Oh and why the heck did that tech have to scare you like that, maybe it was a warning not to have the rads so soon. But what a way to say it, I'm sorry you had that happen to you. hugs

I should have given more info. I had asked to start rads as quickly as possible because I am moving in August and will not have the same insurance (LONG STORY). After hearing the details of my situation, my surgeon and med onc were on board and I have been healing very well from surgery overall. (My incision is only about 3/4 inch). I also have not had chemo and will not be having chemo.

I think that the rad onc was really upset because she did not have more say in my treatment plan being so different. When I met with her last Thursday, I explained the whole situation and that the med onc had gotten me an appt. with her so quickly because we wanted to proceed quickly. She said, "we'll see about that" but then she called him and we moved forward. She did a full examination on Thursday and said how well I was healing and NOTHING about any concerns. It was only when I was on the table having the mapping done on Friday that she brought up her... "oh by the way..." thing. I am SURE she did it to scare me.

This probably doesn't make any kind of sense to anyone reading this, but I really do want to start rad today as I need to get it done while I'm insured. I guess I'm just getting last minute nerves and am SO upset that I have a cold Undecided
