I finished tx in April and am now ready to figure out what's next.  I've been sick on and off since '05 and only worked part time during parts of that time.  Now I'm good to go and am stressed about getting employement.  Any advice on how to apply with such a sketchy job history?  The other thing I'm worried about is insurance.  I'm thinking of working with disabled people again to create some job history and stability.  But I have a degree in social work and someday would like to have a higher up job. But with my health problems, I'm really concerned about losing my government insurance and going onto other insurance.  If some time has passed by then, will somebody cover me that I could even afford and that would cover anything?  I'm almost scared to try for a better job.

Anyone else going through all these problems?

The other option I'm looking into is going back to school.  Since I'm on disability, I could possibly get schooling paid for.  That would work to my advantage when trying to get a job after that because I would have been in school which shows I've been consistantly working hard and would help with the lack of employment history prior.  And I would hopefully find something that I could get a job in that would give me more of a middle class lifestyle.  And maybe by then if some time has passed without health problems, the insurance wouldn't be as bad as now either.  I don't know.

    Hi Paxton,

I work in the social services field assisting people with disabilities (specifically mental health) return to the workforce. I believe that your first call should be with the Vocational Rehab (VR) office in your state. In NJ, the counselors are vocational rehab counselors that will be the focal point of clients returning to work and should be able to assist you with employment concerns and vocational testing. The Mental Health Association is my employer and we have a contract with the Division of Vocational Rehab (DVR) to assist people with employment once they are referred to us by the DVR office. Many of our clients have limited work history and that does not preclude them from finding employment. We have found good job matches in competitive employment for them and link them also with a benefits counselor who will advise them about their monthly income threshold which will them to keep their social security disability and benefits. They are even able to exceed that threshold but not after a 9 month work trial period. The VR office in your state will also discuss education and job training services available to you as well.

Good luck to you and I hope you are able to get an appointment with your local office soon.

Hi Pax! I'm not sure about getting a job with some gaps in employment or even about insurance issues (losing what you have would make me nervous too). But...I always think you can't have too much education, and if you have a chance to get some schooling paid for, I say go for it! I'm thinking like you, in that it would help get you back into circulation and break the ice for that first job. Whatever you decide keep us posted and good luck.

I second the Voc rehab referral!  July 1 begins their new year with funds and would be a great time to apply since they usually run out of money by Jan.  in TN
