Anyone have peridontal procedures done?

I was referred by my dentist to a peridontist as I have bone loss in the back of my jaws.  This most likely started when I had impacted wisdom teeth removed many years ago and the way the gums healed.  My impactions were quite bad as I had to have the procedure done in the hospital.  It appears when they removed the left lower wisdom tooth some jaw bone broke and was also removed.

My question is has anyone had any dental procedures like this done? I wondered what to expect in terms of discomfort and recovery.  I consider my experience with bc to be hell so this cannot be nearly as bad.  Cry

Have you met with the periodontist yet? You'll get plenty of opportunity to ask questions at your consultation. If answers are not forthcoming, ask for a different referral. Perio surgery is both science and art and you need confidence in and rapport with the DDS who you'll be seeing.

If the defects are mostly due to the old impactions, it's likely that a simple bone graft will be done. I say 'simple' because often a synthetic matrix is used and your own body gets kick-started into building new bone in the area. It's not an overly traumatic ordeal. If, however there has been long-term inflammation and periodontal disease in the areas of the 2nd molars, the tissue has to be healthy first. They may suggest specific areas of scaling and root planing. All of these therapies will likely be done under local anesthetic, in appointments of no more than 90min.-2hours. You will want to take it easy for a day or two - no strenuous exercise. You'll want to avoid hard, crunchy or overly spicy foods. But if you survived impacted 3rd molars, you've already proven yourself a dental survivor! And no, it won't even be in the same ballpark as anything you dealt with during your breast cancer.
