Has anyone met with an Herbalist?
The hospital where I was treated offers no Integrated or Complementary services post chemo or radiation treatments. No one including my Onc discusses vitamins, supplements, diet, exercise etc so I've been doing all my own research and self dosing.
What I've found frustrating is trying to find by referral someone for massage therapy, accupuncture or Complementary Guidance with vitamins and supplements. The Amercian Cancer Society has an online dictionary (vitamins, herbs) but they were useless in finding local services as mentioned. When I asked for these services I was pointed to support groups and retreats. (I get my support here thank you very much!)
Anyway I did find a nurse herbalist 1.5 hours away and of course non of the fees are covered by insurance. Has anyone gone this route and were you satisfied using this resource? Part of the program includes a detailed analysis of my bc diagnosis and medical hx plus current diet, supplements and exercise. She then will customize a monthly herbal supplement (maybe include vitamins?) for $165 per month. I guess I'm already spending at least $75 - $100 per month for my current vitamins:
Calcium plus Mg
Vitamin D
Co-Q
Omega 3
B-Complex
Melatonin
Glucosamine Joint supplement
So has anyone else pursued these types of services and were you satisfied? I'm concerned I'm not being evaluated by a physician and simply having an office interview and then a supplement formulated for me. Why is this bohtering me? Granted I don't feel comfortable with my onc who doesn't cover any of these areas or provide referrals. I find teh breast center is more oriented to providing surgery chemo rad services and then very drug oriented for writing prescriptions and that is it. Of course they are obligated to have their social worker present for when we patients have our mental melt downs but frankly that doesn't work for me.

CP, I too had the same frustrations with my doctors because they do not offer any integrated services. I deeply felt that this was the route I wanted to go. I finally found a doctor of chiropractic who specializes in nutrition, can draw blood, etc. She is helping me to balance my system and has been there to answer all the questions my other doctors tried to minimalize. I am also having her do my breast exams so I do not have to go to the cancer center, which is so depressing. Check in your area to see if there are chiropractors who also practice holistic medicine. It is more accepted in this branch of medicine because they are not ruled by the FDA. Also, there are some threads here talking about books to read that were a big help to me and others who have chosen to go this route. Most of all, don't give up. If you heart is telling you this is the route you want to go, then you will make the decisions that are right for you. But it is definitely worth it to find a doctor who can help you. Without that support I might be second guessing my decisions, and it gives me peace of mind to know that my doctor is keeping me on the right track.

my experience has been that "most" Medical Doctors (MD's) don't know much about complementary medicine or supplements. This is very frustrating. I recently saw a naturalpath that my breast surgeon has been referring her BC patients to for many years. The naturalpath I saw specializes in women's health. Whoever you choose to see, be sure they have experience with BC. This is a speciality in itself. I also have two naturalpaths in my family but one does mainly research and the 2nd one does alot with infertility and pain management etc. Therefore they don't have much if any experience with breast cancer that's why I went elsewhere. The naturalpath I saw relies on extensive blood work including vitamin D levels which are very important with breast cancer. Also wants a food diary at the next visit and is planning on doing more blood work, if I remember correctly some type of immune function test. The naturalpath caters to you specific needs and what you may be lacking in diet etc. It's not "one size fits all". She did give me some supplements to start me off. Also, she recommended that I read the book titled "Return to Wholeness" by Deepak Chopra. IIf you would like to know the list of supplements just let me know. Also, suggested to try to elliminate some of the toxins in my environment from house cleaners, soaps, make up, shampoos, deodorants etc. but not to go crazy and stressed about it. The book "Georgeously Green" by Sophie Uliano helped with this end of it. You can also go to http://www.gorgeouslygreen.com/ to get some info. The book is very simple and easy to understand, you can learn alot by just skimming it. I don't know if you have a Target in your area but their "Method" products for cleaners and laundery detergents are non-toxic.
Best of luck,
Liz

The only experience I had with an herbalist was one who sent me the "molepaste" mole remover which removed my skin tags, age spots and moles. It worked well and the company told me it was sent by an herbalist. I would trust them over some doctors that's for sure.

I didn't meet with an herbalist, but my Chinese doctor put me on a number of supplements including Vitamins C, D and E, bee propolis, grape seed extract, and lipoic acid. Also, special mushroom supplements and teas. I don't even bother talking to my onc about the supplements anymore because he seems to laugh at them and thinks they are so ineffective that they could do me no harm. I also wish our Western medicine was more comprehensive. I found it extremely worthwhile to have my consultations with the Chinese doctor, and I feel better after starting on my vitamin regime.

Hello-
I edited the link above for the Gorgeously Green website so now it should work. Also, below is a link to various types of alternative medicine and ailments including BC.

Thank you ladies for the links and your replies. Extremely helpful to get your feedback! I think I will continue my search for someone with a more extensive background and experience. Just my gut feeling here to get more information and details.

I think it is unfortunate that our insurances do not cover a holistic approach at all. Certainly, I won't see it in my life time.. but hope the young people will fight for it. God forbid if we ever get national health care.. it will be even worse.
I recommend to continue your research and I highly recommend Dr. Patrick Quillin, Beating Cancer With Nutrition. He is a former VP of a major Cancer Treatment Center of America. He offers much information regarding supplements as well as diet. He pretty much gives suggested amounts of most supplements while also encouraging monitoring for certain other supplements.
Check him out.

I have looked for help with finding someone for three years. I did find one or two that I found by searching naturpathic and homeopathic listing sites. I a Christian and want someone with Christian values not "new" wave that is popular in this area. I have asked numerous other people and think I have found someone near by. (just met him for the first time) You can also find them through homeopathic colleges. These are the people with a four year college degree in natural medicine. The guy I found is a MD that now practices alternative therapies....just the combo I was looking for. If these people do a lot of alternative therapies they sometime lay low and rely on word of mouth, because they don't want FDA or other medical society's looking over their shoulders all the time. You can also ask a good local health supplement supply store. When I say good this means some who is not in a chain but someone who has been at it a long time. I have a lady that runs one from her home base business for over 30 years. You can also find them near you by searching a area you are interested in. For example hyperthermia, chelation.

I have heard great things about Holly Hayward of Sugar Hill Botanicals 603 823-8434 located in Sugar Hill New Hampshire her email address is hhayward@ncia.net.
I have been thinking of Herbal Supplements for a while. I'll have to give her a call anything to feel better.

Don't know if this would be helpful but after going through breast cancer and treatment 16 years a go I got with a nutritionist who took me through a raw food diet for cleansing. I have to say my skin never looked so good. I felt really good for about 3 months but because I was having trouble finding a vegetarian protein source I became deficient and got weak. Anyway, I can't recommend the fasting and cleansing enough. It's not easy but well worth it. It addressed a number of issues I had been struggling with for years and I believe it helped me cleanse from the chemo. PM me if you want more details.

A lot of women on the Amazon Group for alternative breast cancer therapies use herbalist, Dr. George Wong. He was Director of Preventive Oncology some place in NY. Before that he worked at Sloan Kettering. He specializes in women's health.
He is a PhD, not a medical doctor. I heard him speak on breast cancer herbs in Florida last year. A very gentle and kind man. I don't think he has a web site but his email is drgeorgewong@yahoo.com
Google his name for more info.

I, too, am looking for something beyond conventional treatment. My MDs just look at me and say there is nothing scientific that they can recommend. I do yoga and acupuncture which are extremely helpful but I feel that I'm missing something. I don't want to do anything wierd but has anyone heard of a tea made from papaya leaves?

To: Enjoyeachday:
I heard of Essiac Tea being good for breast cancer. I have a list of things I am taking now. If you would like to know, just private message me. I met with George Wong Phd... good doctor. I'm waiting for his herbs to arrive. It is very important to do holistic things and to avoid certain foods and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Get a juicer and mix up a healthy blend. Good luck.

All of these suggestions are wonderful, thanks for sharing. I started to see a certified nutritionist in Washington, DC named Victoria Wood. I can't recommend her enough and have come to believe that everyone should see a nutrionist in addition to seeing a doctor since nutrition is so below their pay grade
. She has helped me identify a number of "breakdowns" in my nutrition which likely contributed to my getting breast cancer. The nice thing about going to someone like that is that they keep up on all the research which is pretty much a full time job.

Bmdaley,
If I may ask.. what did she tell you about the breakdowns that likely contributed to you getting breast cancer. If you would like to PM private.. that is fine to.

Hi everyone:
Read this article. This herb HSB is showing promise for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. It prohibits the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow for survival.
