Sunscreens

Hi All,
I am not sure if this is the place to post this topic, but since using sunscreens are a must for me and my kids, I have done some research on it and wanted to share what I found.
I found a very informative website:
National Geographic's Green Guide to Sunsreens and Sunblocks. It also discusses sunscreen/block ingredients that are potentially cancerous/hazardous to our health.(http://www.thegreenguide.com/reports/product.mhtml?id=27)
I have also found the following natural products:
- Soleo sunscreen (http://www.soleousa.com/) - SE FormulaTM: made using grapeseed oil, macadamia oil, green tea extract, roman chamomile extract, sunflower oil, capric/caprylic triglycerides (plant oil derived), beeswax, theobroma butter, candelilla wax, lecithin, vegetable oils, cucumber extract, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E) ACTIVE INGREDIENT: zinc oxide 22.3%
A healthy choice: * NO chemical UV-absorbers * NO synthetic preservatives * NO titanium dioxide * NO benzoates * NO petrochemicals * NO artificial fragrances
- All Natural Baby Sunscreen: (http://www.allnaturalbaby.com/) - Ingredients: Vitis vinifera (grapeseed) oil, Caprylic/capric triglycerides, Carthamus tictorius (Safflower) oil, Macadamia terrifolia seed oil, Sesamum indicum (sesame ) seed oil, Bees wax, Vegetable oil, Candellia wax, Camellia sinensis leaf extract (green tea), Vitis vinefera (grapeseed) extract, Carnauba wax, iron oxides, tocopheryl acetate.
I purchased the Soleo sunscreen and use it for me. My kids say it is too greasy, so I will now try the All Natural Baby Sunscreen. Anyway, I thought I would share...as we know knowledge it power, no matter how confusing things may seem!
Hugs,
Anne

This is depressing! I avoid parabens in everything, but use a sunblock with titanium dioxide! And my sunscreen/moisurizer has avobenzone--don't know if that's related to benzophone-3, above, which may mimic estrogen. I think I'll just go hide in a dark cave!!
Not to mention that new evidence shows how good sunlight is for us (except for the skin cancer/aging part).
Thanks for posting this but . . . help!

Another website I've found useful is Environmental Working Group. http://www.ewg.org
If you look on the lower, right hand side, you'll see under More Tools & Resources a link to the Skin Deep database. You can search on all kinds of products by type and brand to see what their safety rating is.

You also might want to check out www.carenonline.com
These gals have a great website that differentiates between natural, organic chemical free products. Another tool to help with all the conflicting info we get!
Hugs,
Anne

The bad news about sunscreen ingredients was all of the press yesterday. It is frustrating - we don't get enough D and then sunscreen causes cancer! Octinoxate, oxybenzone, paba, padimate O are all bad. Estrogen disruptive. Too many chemicals in our personal care products.
ARRGGGG!

Sunscreen does NOT cause cancer, but the sun DOES....and women with breast cancer may have a higher lifetime risk of melanoma! If you are worried about sunscreen products, try covering up with lightweight sun protective clothing. Two good companies are Sun Precautions and Coolibar. I have Sun Precautions products and LOVE them -- very lightweight and lots of ventilation. They also have soft wide brimmed hats (cozy and sun protective on a bald head!). For swimming, I bought two surfer shirts (also called rash guards) from a local surf/scuba shop -- I match my niece (all the little kids are wearing them) and look like a superhero!
