Pleas help me understand Her-2-Neu results

Had IDC (moderately differentiated) in 2000 which was ER/PR+ and Her2Neu 1+ overexpression, all 14 nodes negative.  Was treated with lumpectomy, radiation and 5 years Tamoxifen.

Current biospy results for 9mm recurrence at same site are IDC, Histologic Grade High grade (III/III), ER/PR Neg and Her2Neu NOT overexpressed and then it has (0.5 average membranous intensity) written after it.  So NOT overexpressed means Negative?  If so, then I would be Triple Negative?

I understand the ER/PR Neg means it wouldn't respond to hormone therapy, but can someone please help me understand the Her2Neu results a little better and what those results mean as far as treatment?

    Thank you!

    Sher,

Sounds like your a triple neg now.  I hope they did a FISH test to double check your Her2.  They have gotten a lot better with the diagnoses of Her2 receptors.

As for treatment...means you will not receive Hercepton and chemo that have been designed specifically for Her2 receptors.  Bottom line is more chemo for treatment and no back up when your not on chemo.  But triple neg does respond well to chemo so there is hope you will be cancer free again.  It looks like you find it early again.  That is your best possible hope that you can hit this hard and get back to life.

Prayers that you find your answer and directions for treatment soon.

    Hi Flalady,

As far as I can tell from the pathology report, the Fish test was not done since I was < 1.6 with a 0.5 reading.  The report shows readings 1.6 to 2.5 "equivocal (to be confirmed by in-situ hybridization) which is the Fish test I believe.  But, I'll ask the oncologist about it.  Or did you mean that the Fish test sometimes gets different results?

    Thanks!

Fish test is good indicator.  Another way to ask your doctor is...are you Her2+ or ++ or+++. You must be Her2+++ to be treated as a Her2.

    Best wishes,
