shingles

Last Monday I had #3 of 4 Taxol treatments. ... got the typical muscle pains a few days later. By Friday, it felt like somebody had taken a sledgehammer to my right ribcage extending around to the back. Got undressed to shower Saturday am... and nearly fell over.. Red, blistery angry rash under the right breast and around to my back. Of course I thought it was inflammatory BC and that I was a goner... ran down to the computer and started searching rashes. Started to see that it was looking like shingles. Jumped in the car and went to nearest hospital emerg. Sure enough, it was. The doc was really nice, he rushed me through and gave me a prescription for Valtrex and Percocet for the pain. Raced home to get ready for my son's 8th birthday party --- I know, crazy. By then it was 1 pm, and 10 little boys were set to arrive at 2. Just about had a heart attack getting ready and dealing with the pain. DH was great dealing with all the kids running around. But I'm fed up. I can't wait till treatment is over and I get my life back. I just feel like it's always something, cancer, surgery, chemo, radiation to come... now the effects of a lowered immune system. Shingles hurt like h*ll. Argh.

I had shingles, too. Mine was on my neck, back of scalp. I didn't know what it was, but thank goodness my husband did. Got it treated right away. I'm not sure we are warned enough about that possibility. It can be very serious left untreated for too long, not to mention the fear and worry caused by it showing up. You were so smart to get to the computer and find out what was what. You are near the end of your treatment. YEA!
-
Thanks for your support Gitane. I agree about not be warned enough about that possibility. I had no idea shingles could hit. Re: nearing end of treatment -- YEA indeed. Cannot wait till it's over.

Hi Lisa
I got a bad rash right under where my breasts used to be right at the same time I had the bilateral mastectomy and expander placement. I had really bad pain after the surgery. Come to find out, it was shingles! I don't know to this day whether the pain was from the surgery or the shingles! I agree with Gitane about not being warned that shingles is a possibility, since our immune systems are so off because of the chemo, etc. I also got thrush and yeast infections continuously because of the antibiotics I was put on as protection because of my low white cell counts. I eventually just stopped taking the antibiotics without telling my onc, because I was tired of the side effects, and I was afraid of getting C-diff (C-difficile) which is similar to MRSA.

Boy, Irishdreama, sounds like you had a bad time. I see from your profile that you were dx'ed just three days before Christmas too. That must have been difficult. How are you doing now?
-
I feel for you guys that is awful to deal with the surgery and the treatment now my ongl has a paper on the doors warning against shingles, the wierd thing is I thought that if you had chicken pox you wouldnt get them but it says your more at risk. It really is a test to see how much we can take and I had my pitty cry last night just being anxious about #3 of 6 but friday I will be over half way so that is good. I think this site is wonderful, wish I never had to use it but there is a reason for it someday I will know. My son 24 when I was having my pity party said you knew that you were going to have to have chemo just get it done and go on. Well I got him back he is worried about moving out next year and I said you knew you had to move out next year so just do it and get on with it ha...

Lisa, I have had shingles twice and they SUCKED! I don't know if this is your cup of tea, but I had accupuncture that totally got rid of the pain. I got on the table feeling like my ribs were going to explode through my chest...when I got up 90% of the pain was GONE! I had 3 treatments and the shinges were totally gone in a week. It was my first experience with acupuncture and I now use it for more things. PM me if you want more info
Good Luck

Hi Lisa
Actually all the extra crap was almost worse than the cancer-I had a spider bite during the AC and had to skip two treatments, because with no immune system, of course, my leg swelled up like a balloon and turned black where the bite was-had to have 2 Rocephin IV's!! I was actually laughing about all the stuff-honestly, it's so much easier just to laugh and deal with it, and know that you do get through it.I feel great now-I work out 5 days a week, and feel better than I did even before the diagnosis. The Christmas diagnosis didn't make too much difference, I didn't tell anyone except my best friend until after the holidays. I see you were diagnosed right after Thanksgiving. How are you feeling? I had taxotere which is simiolar to taxol and I know how much that sucks! You will feel better though. I'll be thinking of you and hoping you're doing well-keep me posted!

Get on LYRICA as soon as possible, if you're still having pain!!! It's a prescription, and it's magic for nerve pain, especially associated with shingles. The drug makes you a bit loopy at first, but you adjust. It's not habit-forming like pain pills. Please, ask your doctor! (Sounds like a commercial, but it's a product I believe in!)

Hi ladies,
Thanks for the advice. I took AlaskaDeb's advice and went to see an acupuncturist this morning. Feeling very relaxed and sleepy after the treatment - good since I'm having trouble sleeping at night. I'm gonna sneak upstairs for a nap after this.
Irish - thanks for your good thoughts. To answer your question, I'm feeling not-so-hot. One taxol to go, thank goodness and then 21 rads, but feeling very worn out and run-down from all the chemo. I hate cancer. So sick of the treatment, worries about recurrence, looking like crap, etc, etc!
-
Hey Lisa-Congratulations on one more treatment-for me, at least, the radiation treatments were a piece of cake, I used Aquaphor to protect my skin, and only used unscented, hypoallergenic Dove body wash, and my plastic surgeon was amazed at how great my skin looked just a month out of radiation. Take good care of yourself, and try really hard not to dwell on recurrence. I know it's something we all have to deal with, but cancer has taken enough-don't give it the power to take away your ability to enjoy life if you can help it!!!

@#$%^%$#I get SO MAD. There is a Shingles Vaccine! Dang it all! And every woman who has chemo or rads needs to get it. It is only about 75% effective, but even if you get Shingles, with the vaccine, it is a light case. So all you gals who have had Shingles, get the shot, because you can GET IT AGAIN!
I get so mad at the medical profession. Just what everyone needs, Shingles, on top of everything else. I read about the vaccine in the Lady's Home Journal, asked my doc, and he said, "oh yeah, we've got that". I could have strangled him.
Hugs to all, Shirlann
-
Once mine clears up, I'm gonna ask for the vaccine!!! I'd go over the edge if I got shingles again.
You're right - docs are very bad at communicating.
Thanks for the info.
