Fibroadenoma at 14
Comments
-
My daughter found a small lump in her left breast, and the doctor thinks it's a fibroadenoma but ordered a breast ultrasound just to be sure. Could be a cyst. Having had breast surgery 3 times myself (2 fibroadenomas and 1 cyst) I'm quite scared. I've been reading that breast cancer in a 14-year old is highly unlikely. Any comments?

BC is highly uncommon in a 14 yr old but it is good that your daughter is being checked out. 80% of all lumps are benign

At 14, the lump is almost certain to be a fibroademona. I had my first when I was 16. They are the most common lump found in teenagers. And the good news is that in young women, usually an ultrasound is quite effective at clearly identifying the lump as a fibroademona so often no further testing is required.
While breast cancer is being diagnosed in younger and younger women these days, it's virtually unheard of in someone as young as 14.

Beesie and Pepper,
Thanks for responding so quickly. I've been a nervous wreck since we left the doctor this evening but I'm being strong in front of my daughter. I've been on the internet all evening and have found no articles of breast cancer being diagnosed in teenagers. Again, I've had breast surgery 3 times and would trade places with my daughter in a heartbeat. The ultrasound is next Thursday and I'll be sure to keep you posted. One question, should I have it removed or just watched? I told the surgeon today I wanted it removed because my philosophy is "if it shouldn't be there I don't want it there."

Fibroadenomas are harmless so most often younger women are given the option on whether to remove it or not. Some do, some don't. Once you're in your mid-30s, they should be removed, not because they are harmful but because they could block the view of other breast tissue (and other more serious problems) in a mammogram. But I have heard of many older women who've had fibroadenomas in their breasts for 10 years or more.
I had my first one removed when I was 16. Back in those days, they didn't have the same diagnostic techniques that they do now, so it was the only way to know for sure that it was a fibroademona. When I got another one a few years later, based on my history, the feel of the lump and the location (it was in the same place in my breast as the first one and often they do come back within about 4-5 years), my surgeon was 100% sure it was another fibroademona and didn't see any reason to remove it. I left it for years although as I moved around (university, new jobs) and set myself up with new doctors, each new doctor would freak when they felt the lump - I had to explain to them what it was. So I finally got fed up and had the second fibroadenoma removed.
Assuming it's a fibroadenoma, I'd recommend that you see how your daughter feels about surgery. If she wants the lump out, then schedule the surgery. But if she's not comfortable with the idea of surgery on her breast, it can certainly wait.

I know a fibro adenoma can be frightening.I had one when I was 20 and I fell to pieces.I had it out though even though the doctor said it was benign.when I was dx it was in my other breast and unrelated some 20 plus years later.Odds are she will be A-OK. she's really young, it's highly unlikely to be CA from what i've read.

I know this is years late, but I am fourteen and just had one removed and I was so scared, I do agree with you to take it out. My grandma said the same thing "if it shouldn't't be there take it out". I felt scared because I was so young but I hope she is doing okay now a days and you too
