After you are dx'd what do you do next? What type of Dr do you contact?

Thanks, I know that seemed like a stupid question , but we really have no idea!

It's NOT a stupid question!  I asked several friends who were nurses what I should do next.  I just wanted someone who is a cancer specialist, not a general surgeon.  He did my surgery and then referred me to an oncologist.  Ask your OB/GYN for references, too, ask several people in your area, you want the best...

One of the best places that I found was the Cancer Information Center at the hospital.  They can suggest treatment options and guid you to the right doctors at the right time.

    God bless,

Like some of the other posters, my pcp referred me to a breast surgeon, although I actually chose another after some references. She made the recommendations later for the oncologist and plastic surgeon.

sem247 is right - it's not a stupid question! We all jump into a BC 101 course as soon as we're diagnosed, and we all can use all the help we can get!

    Best wishes to you-

    Sue

Also check around for a hospital that has a breast center. They usually have a team approach to treating bc, and can set you up with information on the drs that work through them.

If there isn't one in any of your local hospitals, get a reference from your pcp, gyn, or even someone who has had bc. You will need to see a surgeon, first and an oncologist shortly afterward. The oncologist plans the drug attack and the surgeon plans the cancer removal. Your pathology report kind of determines which comes first.

I was in such a state of shock that my sister had to make all the early calls and make appointments for me. It was all I could do to get up and go to work. Be sure to take someone with you to the appts because you need that extra set of ears to hear the things you miss.

I strongly agree with Nancy about a Breast Care Center.  That way you don't have to schlep your records and films from one doctor to another, and they handle the coordination between steps.  That being said, you might want to see what your insurance allows
