Urgent need for housing info/resources!

Hi all...I'm posting this for Amy since she was just told that she needs to find someplace to live by tomorrow. She has been staying with a neighbor since the fire, but he has told her that she can't stay. She has her 3 cats and needs to find somewhere for herself and the cats asap. My only suggestion was an extended stay place but she doesn't have a deposit or a credit card and, besides, they might not take the cats. So we were thinking about her renting a camper and living there until her insurance came through and she can find someplace permanent. So if anyone knows anything about camper rentals or ANY housing possibilities in or near Philly or if anyone has a camper they can loan her...whatever....any ideas at all are most welcome and urgently needed. Please PM me with any and all ideas and I'll pass them on!
What a run of bad luck poor Amy is having....geez!!!!

Can the red cross help? They usually have funds for short term housing for people who have had a house fire.

That's exactly what I was thinking: Red Cross. They usually help folks displaced by home fires. She should call them if she hasn't already!

The Red Cross actually intervened the day of the fire and gave her money for bedding and clothes (about $200 I think). It seems that they do have shelters too, but they're in pretty seedy, undesireable areas and certainly don't take cats. Since her cats are all she really has left, I think that Amy will sleep in her car with them before she'll leave them anywhere.
I'm going to see if I can find out where and how campers can be rented using her zip code...

What about the social services? Or salvation army? I think here, they set you up for a few nights in a hotel when you are homeless. It's a start anyway, I would think. What town is she in? I saw you were NC, but you say philly? PA? I know nothing about pa

What about contacting the humane society or her vet, sometimes people foster animals when the owners are in some sort of crisis? I know Amy wouldn't be with her cats, but at least she would know that they were taken care of.

How about asking churches and extentions of that, private families will sometimes help out. That really sucks.

Amy should contact her insurance agent or claims and check to see if she has emergency living expenses.......most insurance cos. provide in claims such as fires and tornadoes that a part of the claim is paid immediately for housing and basic health conditions such as prescriptions and even such things as toothbrushes......etc...........most ins. companies will pay even a day after the lost..........so sorry this has happen to Amy............I miss her..........Shokk

The United Way has a telephone service in many areas. By dialing 2-1-1, you can be put in touch with them and they can look through their database to see what assistance is available. This is a newer service, but they are trying to consolidate information to help connect people with services.

I just talked to Amy and the insurance company has decided to put her up in a motel for a few days in the Fort Washington, PA, area. She asked me to see if anyone lives in that area who could call her and tell her the best place to stay and the stores and conveniences in that area. You can pm Fitchik or me.

Did Amy find someplace for her kitties, or can she keep them at the motel? Some support groups like Red Cross have become more sensitive to the needs of pet owners since the catastrophe in New Orleans.
There were hundreds of people who refused to leave their flooded homes after Katrina, because the rescue agencies would not let the people take their pets with them. People who did make it out of the flooded area with their pets arrived at shelters (including Red Cross and FEMA-sponsored shelters) and were forced to abandon their pets because pets weren't allowed in the shelters.
At the same time as that was going on, animal protection groups (Humane Society, SPCA, and others) and veterinary organizations had set up temporary shelters for pets, and had arranged for networks of people to foster pets...but FEMA refused to grant those groups and facilities "official" status. Plus, the "official" policy was that pets were not allowed in the rescue vehicles, and were not permitted inside the federally sponsored shelters.
It's my understanding that some of those negative attitudes about pets have changed since then. After a fantastic lobbying effort in Congress, some of the support agencies now realize how important it is for people to know that their pets are safe.
Perhaps Amy could contact a local Humane organization or animal shelter, or some local veterinary clinics, or even an animal boarding facility, to see if they can offer some free or reduced-cost assistance.
