my new furball!!!

I have a new kitten, y'all! Got her yesterday from my niece who rescued her from a pretty dismal outdoor existence where 2 of her siblings had already been killed by dogs. She's only 6 weeks old and fits in my hand...aaawwwww! She also has fleas and I'm in a quandry as to how to get rid of them. My niece gave her several "light" flea baths because, due to age & size, she shouldn't be exposed to such strong toxicities. She still has several though, as I discover while petting her. I'm afraid of infestation and will need to exterminate if it happens. Ugh.
As for Sasha's gratitude for my providing her with a companion...well, you can imagine. She hates her of course! Hisses incessantly and growls and has even charged her a few times. I'm keeping the kitten in the bathroom at night and when I'm at work for her own safety.
She's so, so, so adorable though and has the tiniest meow. I'll try to upload some pics and post them soon!
Oh and in keeping with the Russian skaters theme, I've named her Katia...for Katia Goordeeva!

Congratulations, Marin. A new kitten is always so much fun. Sorrry about the fleas - I understand about not wanting to use anything too toxic, but I am sure you don't want Sasha getting them as well as your house. That is miserable. I check on line and this is what I came up with:
"How do I get rid of fleas on a young kitten less than 6 weeks of age?
Many people ask this question and so often they are given the wrong advice. People will often recommend flea
powders, flea rinses, essential oils and other chemicals that are far too dangerous to use on kittens less than 6 weeks old.
It is not safe to put chemicals on kittens of less than six weeks of age. Fleas themselves can also be very dangerous to young kittens and can even result in a kitten dying from anaemia so you do need to kill these fleas. If the kitten is with it's mother and nursing it is more than likely that the mother cat has a flea infestation so first you need to treat the mother cat. If there are other cats or dogs in the household you need to treat all pets and also your house.
How to remove fleas on a very young kitten
The safest way to treat a kitten under 6 weeks of age for fleas is to bathe him using warm water and Dawn dishwashing detergent and then to manually pick off remaining fleas. Dawn dishwashing soap is very effective and it kills fleas quickly. Many breeders bathe their cats in Dawn.
Fill your sink or tub with warm water. (Test the temperature as if you were giving a baby a bath). Using the kitchen sink is often easiest as you don't have to bend down and you are more in control. Immerse the kitten up to his neck and insure that he is saturated. Wet his face and head with a face washer. Then lift him out and place him on a towel. Gently massage in the Dawn detergent. Massage the soap all over his body and around his neck, ears, face, head and under his chin, being very careful not to get soap in his eyes. The fleas are not silly and will head for the high dry ground of the head area.
Then put him back in the water for a rinse. If he is not fighting and struggling too much try to keep him submerged for a few minutes. If he is clawing you to pieces get the job over and done as quickly as possible. Having two people perform the operation is often easier. One to hold the kitten and one to massage and wash the the kitten. When finished wrap him up in a dry towel and dry him off. Try to do this in a warm atmosphere and don't let him get cold."
Good Luck!!!!

I also found this - it still says to use Dawn, but it also talks about using a flea comb:

Please send pics! Congratulations on your new kitty!
I have heard a hint about introducing new cats to an existing cat, or if one goes to the 'hospital', and comes back smelling strange...take a cotton ball and put pure vanilla extract on the cotton ball. Then rub the kitties' noses with the cottonball, and they will accept the other cat more easily.
Good Luck with your new addition!!

Yeah! I love baby animals
My friend had a cat that got fleas, but she didn't want to use the chemicals. She bought a little flea comb that had batteries in it. As she combed through the cats hair it made a little humming noise that got louder when it hit a flea and shocked it to death. It didn't hurt the cat at all and got rid of the fleas in a few days of combing. i don't remember what the little comb was called, but I bet a big pet store would have one. They also make the same thing to use on kids with lice....

Marin,
When our kittens had fleas we had to deal with it on a daily basis, with a flea comb. Fill a small bowl with water mixed with detergent (dish is fine). Use a flea comb and thoroughly comb through all her fur, pulling out the fleas, and then drop them in the soapy water. It has to be soapy because the soap somehow removes the surface tension and they sink and die. They are hard and almost impossible to crush. This worked for us but like I said we had to keep on it daily. Our apartment was infested with fleas; they would jump on us as soon as we got home and bite our legs. You really want to nip this in the bud!
Good luck and congratulations!

Hi Marin-
Congrats on the new kitty. When our kitten had fleas we used Avon Skin So Soft and it worked wonders. We bought the spray bath oil. Their coat gets a little oily and doesn't look the best for a couple days but it works and is gentle on their little kitten skin.

This weekend...I promise! I've been swamped at work and only get an hour or so at home each night. The good (great!) news is that Sasha is actually warming up to Katia! I thought that it would take weeks, but yesterday I took a chance and let Katia have full run of the house along with Sasha all day. I didn't know what I'd walk into when I got home, but all was well. And then, last night, they even played with one another for a few seconds...until Sasha got a hold of herself and walked off in a huff
.
So pics are on the way....if she would just sit still for them!

FYI .... eucalyptus is a natural flea repellant. My mom always put eucalyptus branches (with the leaves) under the house. I live in a house with 3 eucalyptus trees in the backyard and my neighbors have them as well, so we don't have fleas at all. You might get some and lay it around so they don't infest your house. My dog has not had fleas in the 5 years I've been here.

Here she is!
She and Sasha are now playing and sleeping with one another....more than I'd ever expected or hoped for!

Awwww, she is just beautiful, and so is Sasha. I would love to share a newbie with you!
Someday.

OMG, how cute!!!!!!!!!

Oh, Marin, I just found this thread about your new kitty. She is so awwwww-some, cute as can be. I love her. She has a very pretty cat face and kind eyes.
I love the name, Katia, as much for her namesake as for the silly pun.
Best wishes for a long and loving life together.
P.S. If you find that clawing is a problem, I recommend Soft Paws, little rubbery kitty nail tips that are glued on (you can do it or at the vet's). They are inexpensive, are not harmful or annoying to the cat and really WORK. Ask me how I know!
P.P.S. Just noticed the big basket of kitty toys. Are they ALL NEW for the new Baby??? LOL She will be so spoiled.

OMG she is soooooo cute. If I can ever get a cat again I want one that has some orange color. Very very cute! thanks for sharing!
