I spoke with my breast care coordinator, and she thinks I should have the BRCA Gene test.  When I asked why, she said because of my age (42).

I did some reading, and it seems that this testing is recommended when you have a family history, or other factors (none of which I have).

I didn't see anything recommending the test only because you are under 50.

It's a very expensive test (not sure if my ins. would cover it, she said they would check.)   It would also take about 2- 3 weeks to get it all done.  I dont' know how I feel about this.

Any comments on this one ?  Thanks very much.

    Thanks for the help.  Julie

If you want the test, and find out that insurance will pay for it, it is just a blood test. Your tx need not be held up while you are waiting for the results.

    Think gnocci!

If insurance will pay for it, then go for it.  If not, you could always go for the genetic counseling to see the risk you may have for being positive, and then you can decide if you want the blood test.

    Hi Julie,

They often recommend gene testing if you are dx when you are still premenopausal, if that helps. It is expensive, so it's a good idea to get pre-approval from your insurance company if you decide to do it. Also, if you don't do it now, you can go back and do it anytime, even when your tx is finished.

    Hugs, smerf
