I have been contemplating the genetic test, but another survivor told me last week that it was probably already run as part of a standard set of tests to put in the national registry. She told me to just ask my oncologist. Is this true?

Most likely, no, it was not run as part of the other tests.  It would require pre-approval from your insurance company and unless you are high risk (such as mother or sister dxed also), you will have to ask for it and your insurance company may deny it.  It is an expensive test.

Anne's right the cost is about the same as the oncotype testing and I can't imagine it doesn't require an okay ahead of time.  It's just a blood test, but I doubt it was ran without your knowledge, especially with all the ramifications of any genetic testing.

There is a list I found online for geneticists, If I can find it I'll post it.  You punch in your zip and get a list of them for your area.  They can answer questions in regards to your needs to do it or not.  I'm still debating b/c it was like 8-10 % I could be a carrier.  Then I found out there is another aunt in the same family line who had bc.  So, I'm rethinking it again. :(  Just more wait and research, and wait and see..

I had to get a referral from my Onc to see my genetic counselor. Luckily, my insurance covered the $3,500.00 cost. It will now be cheaper for my family members to be tested now that we know where the mutation is. Mutation...sounds like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! A geneticist will go over your family history prior to any blood work. If they see the risk factors aren't very high they will tell you...
