Nettie ~
You sound like your doing all the right steps...keep your cami on all night this will help...expect temporary bruising You may experience stabbing pains and throbbing...your nerves are responding ...take some Motrin at bedtime it will get better each day.
Contact your physician if you have excessive swelling, bleeding or heat or even a temperature...
Avoid any activities until you heal!
Here is hoping you have good results !!! Keep us posted !!

I had no bruising at all for the first couple of days, and then it appeared. It depends on how deep the area was; the deeper the area of bleeding, the longer it can take the old blood to make its way up to just under the skin. The bruising will get darker and may even spread over a larger area before it starts to resolve. As the bruising resolves, the colors will change. One woman described it as "autumn in my bra"!
You can keep icing it, but only ice it intermittently - and be sure not to put the ice directly on the skin.
I wore my very snug/firm fitting athletic bra 24/7 for 3 weeks. I still wear it when I walk on the treadmill.
Hang in there, it takes time to heal.

NettiesSS,
Hi, I had a FNA under ultrasound last tuesday week, was yours a core biopsy? This procedure is somewhat similar but uses a bigger needle. Bruising continues to look worse and spread for about a week, mine is just starting to fade a little. Lovely shades of green and gold, very patriotic considering Im australian.
If the swelling dosnt start to go down in 3-4 days and the tingling is continuing, you should ring or see Dr.
Tingling can be a symptom of nerve compression or damage. Should be checked out.
Not happy with my explaination of test results so going back to talk to Dr.
Hope that your results are good ones and no problems with your breast because of test.
As the girls on this site have said to me "when in doubt, ask"
Hope this helps........warm smiles Jaly

Thanks Jaly! Yes it was a core biopsy. They told me today on the phone that people don't normally bruise except maybe very small.Mine is 5 cm x 4 cm.Very dark purple and dark red.Hurts.Bruise got worse after I did dishes and folded laundry.
-
Thanks to everyone! I appreciate you taking the time to help me!

NettiesSS,
Sounds like you have had a bit of bleeding. Probably doing household chores not going to help. Need to just take it easy. No lifting at all for couple of days. Need time to heal.
Piffle to the medical personel in the so called know. As you can see from results from others that have posted, you do bruise. Dukemom is right, depth and amount of times of insertion will probably play a factor in degree of bruising
Keep icing. place ice pack in clean damp cloth and apply to bruised area for no more than 20 mins, reapply every 2-3 hours up to 20 mins at a time over period of 48 hrs. Keep your sports bra on and rest and elevate your side that has had biopsy. No housework.

They told you people don't normally bruise from a core biopsy?? What planet are they on? Like the others who have commented, half my breast was purple, red, and black for a week. Then it turned blue, green, and gold. A physician's assistant who saw my technicolored breast the second week told me that this is normal.
-
Hey Jaly,
Sounds like you've been studying hard for that first aid exam.. You go girl. Carol

I had a TON of bruising and it was delayed as well.

Hey Everyone! A WORD OF CAUTION & HELP FOR POST BIOPSY!
Just a word of caution about Motrin, Advil, asprin & N-Said type products. They thin the blood & can make bruising worse. Making the biopsy site harder to heal. When I had my stereo needle core biopsy, my Dr. & also the nurses told me no Motrin ect. for at least 48 to 72 hours after the biopsy. ONLY TYLENOL! Ice is a great friend 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. Or 20 minutes every hour. You don't want to ice burn the skin. Unless your Dr.s prescribe a different way to do it. I think I heard on a thread somewhere that if you make small bags of water with a little rubbing alcohol (1 teaspoon) mix together and freeze. It will make a slushy type ice bag. Being small it then can fit in your bra nicely. Put a paper towel or soft wash cloth around it so as not to ice burn the skin. Good luck! To anyone hope this Helps. Gentle Hugs to anyone post biop.! They just called results benign, but they nicked a vessel.Thats why its bleeding inside!
-
Hey NettiesSS! Thats wonderful news. What a relief. Now go do something nice just for YOU! You deserve it. Lots of TLC for the wounded one!
Gentle Hugs from Julee!
-
julz ~ Your right TYLENOL ! They did tell me that...gosh how quickly we forget!!!!!!
NettiesSS ~ AWESOME news for you...now you can breathe ...thanks for posting!
Like Jaly said, NO HOUSEWORK...
I hope you heal quickly ---- ouch!

I too had horrific bruising...the procedure itself was not painful at all and I was surprised by how much I bruised...I also had the core biospy and 6 yrs ago I had the vacuum biopsy and I hardly had any bruising..I do take magnesium for high blood pressure and always wondered if that contributed...I also take fish oil...I am scheduled June 17th for lumpectomy and plan on stopping all vitamins 2 wks before..has anyone ever heard of this??? It did finally go away altho Ill be honest its a slight discolored (almost like tanned) where the bruising was....
-
NettiesSS,
I am thrilled re your news. Glad you have simple explanation for server bruising.
-
Beth1128, The Dr's always ask what I'm taking vitamin wise before I go in for a procedure. Especially when I went in for a colonoscopy. But I can't remember what ones they were worried about. Give me a day or 2 & I will try & find out! I have to go to work in a hour - grave yard shift! Julee

My breast was also technicolor after my core biopsies. It gradually got better over months. I'm just guessing, but I don't think they can tell where your blood vessels are when they do a biopsy. I was told not to take any NSAIDs for 2 weeks before the procedure (which I didn't.) I dripped a lot on that biopsy, and the doctor asked if I had stopped my NSAIDs.
These abstracts opine that fish oil may not be associated with clinically important bleeding.

But of course, you should check with your doctor to be sure what (s)he wants. Some surgeons want to follow the way that works best for them. -
Beth ~
They told me to stop all mine two weeks prior as well...I guess so you won't have bleeding issues.
I only took ( 1 Vitamin 1 Glucosimine and 1 fish oil )
Best of Luck w/ your surgery!!!

Beth: I called local Health food store in town. The 3 main vitamins that have the ability to thin blood & make it harder to clot are VITAMIN E, FISH OIL, & GARLIC. In regards to garlic it doesn't necessarily mean you can't add it to food, but with supplements it has large does of compound in them. You would have to eat A LOT to get the same affect. It's probably a good idea to come off vitamins & herbs before any surgical procedure. Due to the fact that it would be hard for a Dr. to control situations that might arise from use of vitamins & herbs. My Dr. didn't tell me to not stop my fish oil & I did have a small problem with bleeding. (very small) As always ask your Dr. what he wants you to do. Julee

I am having a ultrasound guided biopsy this coming Wednesday.
The Doctor wanted it done the next day but I had been taking pain pills for my back, so have had to wait 5 to 7 days. I have a BIRADS-5 rating. Not good I am told.
It is 3.5cm diameter oval mass on the side of my left breast. I have had this lump since I was a teenager. Never bothered me and still doesn't. I am 45 and now am worried it is something more serious.
Am I more likely to have a FIBROADENOMA (after reading the about it sounds more like that) than breast cancer? Trying to look on the positive, hopeful side.
Any information would be most appreciated.
Jude

To prevent bruises, I used Arnica gel (from VitaminShoppe) just around the incisions. It worked like a charm! I had 3 surgeries already and never had any lingering bruises. My ps even suggested it. Hope this helps :->
God bless,

I'm still continuing to bleed ,even just walking I feel like someone is putting hot water through my breast. When I look the bleeding has spread.Iam not doing any heavy lifting, but I do have kids!
-
Hi Nettie- for me, it took several days for the blood to settle down to the bottom of my breast, so it got worse the first several weeks. I was definitely black and blue. It was so swollen that the radiologist had to go in from the opposite direction for my 2nd biopsy 1.5 weeks later.
-
Hi Jude. I know this is a scary time for you.
In this article, it sounds like in this study, the risk was about 85% for birads 5 *mammograms*. I don't know if that holds for birads 5 *ultrasounds*.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15968496
I certainly have seen several people here who had birads 5 scores and who had a benign result.
The only way they can diagnose breast cancer is after the pathologist looks at pieces of tissue under the microscope.
I'm hoping you have a benign result! Holding you in the light. We're here for you. Feel free to ask questions or vent. -
Hi Leaf,
I do so appreciate your words and it was in fact a 5 on the mammo.
Ultra bio on Wed. Usually always positive so no time to stop now..
I have a close family all women back in Australia, so knowing someone responds gives me great strength, thank you again.
Just got in engaged, shifting this house this weekend...brother does this sort of thing pick its timing..seems not.
-
thanks so much for the info...I going to see my surgeon tomorrow for pre-op instructions and Im going to stop all vitamins tomorrow (2 wks before surgery) thanks again!
