The Sister Study!
Comments

I found this information on another web site - and my sister was permitted to join. "The Sister Study" claims to be researching "environmental and genetic risk factors for breast cancer."
They are still recruiting women, but must now be more selective in the population. This study is one way to help find a cure.....hope some of your sisters who are cancer-free will be interested in joining!

My sister join this study whenI was diagnosed.
FYI to anyone who has a sister who wishes to participate: be prepared to tell your sister all the details of your diagnosis for the study. If for some reason you are not comfortable doing this, your sister can not join.

Two of my four sisters were eligible and have joined.

My sister had breast cancer 15 years ago and survived a very deadly and fast growing mass. Just this past Saturday, she had surgery to remove a devise from her chest to regulate pain in her arm. While in surgery the physician found a mass, malignant, the size of a half dollar. It was biopsied, and she won't know the full result until Tuesday or Wednesday. The physician is going to contact her oncologist who in turn will contact my sister. Not only does she have breast cancer, she is a Type 1 diabetic with neuropathy and has thyroid problems and was on the transport list for a pancreas, she was first on the list. They took her off because of the cancer. I want to help her but with me living in Florida and her living in Connecticut, I don't know how. Her sugars are so unpredictable that she can either go into a coma because of low blood sugar or high blood sugar, even the doctors can't seem to get a handle on it. With this much going against her I'm at a loss as to how to help.

vmatthew - I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. I'm sure you can provide emotional support and help to her, even though you both live so far apart. My sister has been there for me always - on the phone and through email, even though we don't live nearby. If you haven't been diagnosed with breast cancer yourself, you can see if they will accept you into the Sister Study - check out the link I posted above.

Hi swimangel72..........I did do the questionaire and could not qualify at this time. They will send me a postcard at a later date to let me know when I can qualify. Thank you for sending me the link to the questionaire and I will definitely give all my support. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a computer, but there is always the mail!

My sister just finished the sister study. She said it was quite interesting. She's petrified since both myself, and our other sister, have had BC. She's coming to visit this week, so I'll tell her about my BRCA testing results. I'm hoping her assistance will help someone down the line...

My sister in Boston enrolled in the study last year right after my dx. At the very least, she will be getting consistent testing and follow up. Due to our family history I was not considered for the BRCA testing but I was tested for the p53 gene and will be getting the results on the 17th.
