I went for my 3rd taxol tx dose dense today. I don't have a port and they are having trouble getting veins on my good arm. Second try she hit the vein on the back side of arm between wrist and elbox. She checked about every 10 minutes and it was find. My pump alarm went off and she came and looked and couldn't see anything so restarted again. About 10 minutes later I had to go to the washroom and stood up and she said how long has your arm been like that. Halfway from the wrist to elbox it is huge and obviously the needle came out  of the vein. They decided to put iv in my no no arm and finish off. Other than two tries for veins it went without a hitch. At this time my arm that now has pacitaxol floating around in it feels as though it is bruised really badly, my elbow aches. the nurses said they have never had this happen before. Now I am scared of what the taxol will do to the muscle ect. Any thoughts. I am to go back monday and see them.

    Hi everyone,

Just fyi my problem above was called an extravasation which in this day and age is very rare. It is where the chemical goes into your arm instead of the vein. They have no definite answer as to why it happened as it was about 3 and 1/2 hrs into tx. My vein could have gave out or faulty cannula (?) I did not have any burning or itching it just became very swollen quite quickly. The side effects for the first week were extreme pain and could not even rest my arm on a pillow or arm of a chair. It would go from pain, extereme itching, burning and had three lesions that did not open but peeled prior to the rest of my arm which is now peeling. It is now rough like I had heat rash from to much sun looks either red or brown at times.

When the swelling was present I iced it every hour or two with a light towel between my arm and ice. It did help the itching some but for the most part I put cortizone cream initally but had better luck with beneadryl cream. I was told not to put either on the lesions especially if they opened. I also took beneadryl capsules at night otherwise I woke up scratching. I had to go to the chemo clinic everyday for the doctor to look at it and make sure there is no infection. There was a particular form they have to fill out when then happens and monitor very closely.

Just beware girls if you feel anything odd with your iv like itching, burning or swelling call some right away.

I had a problem with Carboplatin during my second treatment. It was a 1/2 hour drip and I felt slight burning towards the end. Come to find out that the needle had punctured through a little on the other side. My whole arm swelled and bruised and itched. The nurse put HOT compress on it, she said the heat opens the veins. That was 5 weeks ago and I still have bruising. I hope it eventually goes away!

I would like to thank both of you for explaining what happened and how it was managed by your oncologists.  Extravasation of chemo drugs is a very scary thought.  Those of us who are using our veins instead of a port fear it each time we go in for an infusion--at least, I do.

Anyway, I just wanted to say I appreciate the follow-up stories.
