Amazing!  I went to a new treatment facility yesterday.  It is an integrated medical facility.  Boy, I learned more in that one visit than I have ever learned at a doctor's before.  It clearly won me over that this approach is for me.

By way of example, I filled out a lot of new patient info including a multi-page checklist of symptoms that I have been experiencing (non-cancer specific).  I have filled out similar such checklists at various doctor's offices since my breast cancer journey began last December, so this was nothing special.

What was special is that the doctor brought the checklist into the examination room with him and began to review it with me (this has NEVER happened before).  He stated that based on my symptoms, he wanted to test me for low iodine which could impact thyroid performance, fibrocystic breats, and breast cancer.  None of the other oncologists or breast speciailists had ever said this to me before.

I now see that there is such a difference in finding a doctor that looks at the "whole person".  I had thought that this holistic terminology was more of a marketing thing than anything substansive.  I was wrong.  There are definite and REAL benefits to having someone look at your whole health picture and not just focus only on individual symptoms or problems.

I will report back on the development of this iodine testing.

    Thanks,

    Mia

    Mia,

I'd like to know what method they'll use to test for iodine deficiency.  I'm holding off for my appt. with an Endo to see if I can heal myself, but I shouldn't be fooling with this.  We can compare notes.

I'll ask specifically and let you know.  They did so many tests that I am not sure which was targeted for that.  I'll respond soon.

The 24 hour Iodine Loading Test is what my doc used to test my iodine levels. If you get your level done, please let us know what it is and what your doctor said.

    TSH Levels

I have been test off & On for Thyroid issues...They have always been 'normal'  I have had Symptoms of both Hypo & Hyper...I cant even recall what symptoms I have had over the years...Because I am so used to living with them & I was always in the  normal range (.34-2.50 says on my Chart)

So today as I am readign about Iodine & Kelp.

I decided to look up my TSH #s.

They really varied.   I have 4 years worth in my Records

2/08 right before my DX for BC  1.69

4/07   2.27 -found a Goiter on my Thyroid that spring during a Chest CT -Looking into my SOB-still wasnt diagnosed with my PFO)

    11/05   .87

    10/04    1.80

Can anyone tell me why the #s might vary each year?

Or explain what they might mean anyway as far as Iodine & Kelp Suppliments?

    Thanks,

    Pam

I have had several thyroid tests in the last few years.  Both blood and saliva.  Never came up with a thyroid condition although I did have a brief one as a teenager.

I recently bought Indoral/Iodine, (sp?) and started taking it yesterday.  I felt hyper last night and wondered if it was that?  Took 1/2 of it today. Are there repercussions from too much iodine.

Some people seem to detox bromide and metals rapidly. That maybe causing your symptoms. If you start with one Iodoral tablet first thing in the morning and remember to take vitamin C (3, 000 mg per day), you should be okay. If you still have symptoms, look at Dr. Shevin's salt water formula to speed the bromide out of your body faster. www.breastcancerchoices.org/drshevin

In regard to Dr. Derry's theory.  It totally makes sense especially to anyone who grew up in the northeast, also known as the goiter belt.  The common treatment for goiter by md's even as late as 1970's was Lugol's iodine.  I had a Dr.in upstate NY, who treated my thyroid with lugol's iodine and it became and remained normal for years.  I had stopped using iodized salt in the 60's due to acne!  Since that time, they stopped putting iodine in our flour, etc.  It is soooo worth reading about this theory and if it speaks to your heart... do it.  Even my oncologist said I will need to see an endocrinologist once I am finished with chemo.  I just read an article by actress Rue McClanahan where she says she is dealing 10 years later with side effects of her treatments!  Iodine can't hurt you and can only help.  Even with Dr. Derry's license issue, he had at least 50 people who he had cured who were NOT allowed to testify!

I say iodine is the answer and it totally makes sense.  Read everything you can find, but i am suspicious of the sites who only are selling their versions.  Lugol's iodine is named from the Dr. who invented it.

In addition, as an inspiration... I have a friend who had stage ll b/c in 97- had surgery, one chemo treatment and then decided no more traditional therapy as she had lost a sister to the b/c.  She went totally holistic and is healed as of this day... Cancer FREE!!! It can happen!  She advised me to read Healing Your Life by Louise Hay and also The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.  She did reiki, counseling, vegetarian diet, and listened to and read "everything that spoke to her heart regarding her healing.  Remember, ladies, we knew something was wrong with our bodies when we learned of this.  I don't know about all of you, but despite the fact i felt relatively "well", my spirit was at "dis" ease.  God' Bless you all and I welcome your comments

I am a little worried about the symptoms.  Isnt it possible that I am not iodine deficient and taking the iodoral creates "too much" iodine in my system? What would be the symptoms of too much? I am reluctant to do a lot of regimes if that could be the case.

If you are concerned about too much iodine, you could always join the Iodine Yahoo discussion Group and ask questions. They have over 1600 members taking iodine. Lots of experience there. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/iodine/

Dr. David Brownstein's book on iodine is great too. He answers a lot of questions.

    Bumping this up - and have a question . . .

I have hypothyrodism and have been on Synthroid continously since about 1973.    I was dx with breast cancer in 2003.  After reading all of this iodine discussion, I have a question - is it something I should look into too?  Or, if one is on Synthroid, then that is that???  Thanks for any imput.

Well how come our doctors don't tell us about iodine and other natural thyroid supplements.  I have had a benign (biopsied three times nodule among other smaller thyroid nodules) about the size of an almond for years.  Thyroid tests always came back in normal ranges and yet I had a slew of symptoms for YEARS which my doctors and an endocrinologist did Nothing about. I was falling asleep constantly, getting infections constantly and accleration of an infectious disease which I will probably have to battle at some level always now, and low temperature.  After about five years of my complaining, one compassionate doctor, not an endocrinologist but an ob-gyn suggested I take Armour thyroid at a low dose to see if it helped.  Within a month I was starting to feel better and the dosage was upped slightly more and I began to feel human again.

Moral of story: Squawk loudly!  Maybe you will be heard.

I wanted to know what sort of iodine you use for the skin test and where you obtain it.  If the skin test is below normal, i.e. absorbs faster than in eight hours, which I assume is a normal time frame indicating that the body does not need it quickly, how much do you take in a titrated dose, how do you take it ,  where does one obtain iodine of sufficient quality to take internally?

I am assuming that my levels of TSH and T4 and T3 are in better ranges now and that the skin test would take a good amount of tie to show absorption.  However it would be great to do this as a double check.

    Many thanks,

    sachasa
