I just got my BRCA testing back and believe it or not I'm NEGATIVE for the gene mutation!!!  I was so happy I cried and my teenage girls are thrilled to know they now have the same chance as everyone else.  I'm still high risk and had my first oncology appt yesterday but the this gene test coming back negative was more than I could have prayed for.  I'll deal with the rest of my dx with a smile now knowing I don't need to worry about my girls too.

    Dear Sally,

I am SO happy for you and your girls. What a load off your mind the results must be! I had my test done yesterday; the waiting is the hardest part. I have two daughters and three granddaughters, so I'm praying for the same results as you.

    Congratulations again; that's great news.

This is terrific news indeed!  What a huge relief!  Best of everything to you and your girls.

Now, you ladies have got my mind racing on the subject.  I won't post here, for this is a good news spot.  But, I will post and get informed.

Thank you for getting my chemo-brain thinking again.

    Affectionately,

    Michelle

Sally - whoo hoo!  I know the feeling - I was an uninformed negative (which shocked the genetics counselor and me!) and I cried for 2 days after getting my results - I was (and am) just so damn grateful!

Best wishes to you and you WILL get through all your treatments knowing you haven't passed the gene(s) on!

    Hugs, Cindie

Congrats mustangsally.  I also tested negative for the BRCA genes and sobbed when the geneticist told me.  I had been petrified for my 2 daughters, ages 18 and 21.  They will still have to be vigilant of course, as my onc. says they face 2 x the risk of the general population.

I'm just curious - how long does it usually take to get the results back from a test like this?

    Great News Sally!  Congrats!

I'm still on the fence about it.  IF only we could get the results to ourselves only and not to be put in our files, I'd do it, but that' worries me :(

Susan, it is usually three weeks. For an extra fee, you can have it expedited, then it's only about 10 days. Also, if there is a known mutation in the family, it is only about a week to ten days (and far less expensive).

I'm still trying to decide whether or not to have this test. My mother and grandmother both had breast cancer, but both were post-menopausal. (Mom was 60, grandma was 67) Cancer has never killed anyone in my family. No one else has even had any form of cancer that I know of. But because I was diagnosed at 41 with stage 1 lobular carcinoma, they're wanting me to take this test.

Is it worth my time, effort, and/or the cost?

mustangsally ( love your avatar by the way )

I can relate with you on the fear/guilt passing the gene down to your daughters ...that would be so hard to hear the possibilities for them but yet being aware of those risks is vital.

If you recall do you remember the %'s of your risk before the actual blood test ?  Like Susan mentioned, I too am debating on the test...I have no family history of BC in my family...Grandmother had bone cancer but not sure as to where it originated and my percentages are 6% according to family history.

Congrats to you and your girls!

    Much LUV
