My mom is 69 and had a mastectomy last February. She found another lump on the same side this year and it's the same type of cancer she had before. She is going to have surgery Tuesday.Needless to say she is depressed and she is somewhat pushing me away when I try to help with things such as taking her home after the surgery this time. She says she can drive and she lives an hour away. This is an emotional time for everyone and I need advice on how to handle her attitude.

    Thanks.Melinda

I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2003, I was just 35 years old ,the tumor was in my left breast but based on my age I decided to have a bilateral masectomy, thinking that once both breast are off, it was not likely for the cancer to come back, but unfortunately the cancer came back in the same breast and at the direct spot.  Right now I'm so confused, my oncologist and a panel of doctors studied the whole situation, and decided for me to have a total hysterectomy, which I had on April 24th 2008.

Right now I'm just living by the grace of God.

When is her surgery scheduled for?  Perhaps you could just be there the morning of and go with her.  Seh really can't so no if you are just there, right?  She probably is still in 1) denial 2) anger mode or one of the others and trying to get a grip on it all.  Keep being supportive of HER feelings and try to understand the emotions she is going through.  I'm so sorry you are both in this again. :(
