OTC diet aids?

This is an iffy question for me...I have a student who would like to take some sort of diet aid and is uncertain about her choices. I know that there are some that contain herbs and that, perhaps, those are thought to be less dangerous than the chemical ones. Does anyone know of a fairly harmless diet aid that she can purchase over the counter or should I tell her that they're all dangerous? I've always advocated that a good diet and regular exercise were the only way, but some people claim to need a "jump-start." Undecided

I have a friend who has had success and few side effects with the new one called Alli or Ali.  She said its FDA approved as well.

Alli is a good product. It used to be by prescription. You MUST follow a low-fat diet on it though, or you can get unplanned greasy diarrhea (TMI?)

I say don't waste your money on diet aids. Losing weight is hard work, as you well know. Calories in vs calories out. That's all that really works. But it takes some people a lot of time and $$ to figure that out.

(I'm not a fan of Dexatrim, etc because it can elevate the heart rate and blood pressure too much. And I'm not convinced about the efficacy of Cortislim, though supplementwatch.com rates it pretty highly.)

I used to complain about my weight, and my doctor's answer to that? Push yourself away from the table. Fortunately, dieting and exercising works for me, but I also know genetics play into it, and it can be very difficult for a lot of people. Also, medical conditions like hypothyroidism,Diabetes, etc. come into play. I've tried the Alli with diet and exercise and it worked good for me!
