We are working on improving the search interface.  Please let us know what comments and suggestions you have for improving search.  Thanks!

I'd like to be able to search within a specific topic - Ideally for post on a subject made by a specific person -  in the title and or body of the post.

I'll have to go search a bit for things and see what else would be really helpful.

Thanks for asking for comments and suggestions ... Smile

It would be nice to have parameters for:

    • date range
    • topic
    • poster

Then in the results, it's nice to have the search term highlighted.

ps, I really did edit this post to try and get my third item into the bulleted list.  Got a message after doing a ctrl+v for pasting that said "Sorry but we noticed that your popup-blocker has disabled a window that provides application functionality.  You will need to disable popup blocking on this site in order to fully utilize this tool."  I have no idea what I might be missing, and I have no plans to turn off my popup blocker to find out.

You should add the word(s) MULTI-FOCAL to the dictionary.

    Thanks.

Althea, what pop-up blocker are you using? You don't have to turn it off, you can set it to allow pop-ups here on BCO org only.

It would be nice if there was a forum which would address the issues of Black women with breast cancer.

The old forum had a function where we could just click on posts from the last 24 - 48 hrs....that way you don't have to click on each sub forum look for new posts.

    Thank you.

Calico, we have recently added "Active Conversations" which shows conversations that have activity in the last 24 hours.

Is there a way to find more posts from a person than just the last 20 or so you can read from their profile?

MtnMama, if you use "Search" and type in the person's username then you can usually find more comments by that person.  I hope this helps.

It will be great to have expanded search capabilities, that can combine search words with date range and poster's name.

In the meantime -- are there data ranges that have been lost?  I can't find things from July - Aug 2007.

I'm confused with the new search.

I just searched a user name that I know posted yesterday and the first "result" was from a post in June, 2007.

    Please explain!

    Thank you,

    Traci

Hi -- the search results still appear in (apparently) random order, with no way to sort.

Thanks Ann for bringing this up again. I have asked about this a couple of times on another thread with no reply.

Last time bco admin replied here was early Jan. They were working on it...............

Impossible to find latest updates on searches...

Maybe we can go back to the "old' search until it is sorted out??

Would love an update on progress.

I was also hoping that we could search for phrases by using quotation marks. I tried to pull up a two word phrase this afternoon and pulled up 1400+ pages that included EITHER word in any order rather than the phrase....or....is boolean searching possible here??????

Pulling up postings in no particular order is extremely unhelpful. If I am a new visitor looking for information on the latest treatments, posts made in the last several months are going to be MUCH more helpful to me than those from 2 years ago...weeding through the muck is a pain in the you-know-what.

duh....boolean search IS possible...instead of putting terms within quotation marks, connect words in a phrase using the plus (+) sign.  My bad...

Not really "your bad", Diane!  You clearly have extensive knowledge of searches.  Using a + sign may not be an possibility that pops into the head of many users.  If it is considered that email challenge registration may pose too many difficulties to some potential newbies, then how much MORE difficult and arcane and LESS user-friendly is the current search situation?

As many of you may have noticed already, the search interface has changed.  The updates now allow you to search by keywords but also by user, time period and topic.  The search results are ordered by date by default but may also be re-ordered by relevancy.  Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.

    Thanks!

First I want to say thank you so much for your effort. I really appreciate it and I know everybody does.

However, the new search seems to have some glitches. Last time I posted (this post excluded) was 11st May but when I searched by my own username within the past month, nothing came up. I had to expand the time period to the past year to get some results, which is obviously inaccurate.

When I searched for my name (either my signature or username) by a keyword, the results were the same as the above.

For instance, type in our mod's name "Melissa" as a keyword and search within the past two weeks. Tami & Melissa posted on the 19th and her name was in the post. But it wouldn't show up in the results. The same for the results by a username.

Would appreciate if you could look into this.

    Thanks in advance,

    Fumi

Hi Fumi, thanks for pointing that out.  We are rebuilding the entire seach index and while this is under way, there will be missing entries.  Since these boards have over 400,000 live posts the indexing takes quite a while.  We hope the index will be fully re-built by sometime tomorrow.
