Bone Mets? What happened??
Comments
-
Just as the 'end' was in sight a new pothole, or maybe sinkhole, has developed. I'm scheduled for bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction on June 18th. Last week I saw my PCP for a routine med refills appointment. I'm already hurting everywhere because I developed chemo-induced fibromyalgia. But I mentioned I'd been having a new pain in my back that was like a broken rib. I guess when you're a cancer survivor no small pain goes ignored. I've already had a chest study x-ray and a bone scan to rule out bone metasasis. Neither were conclusive so now I'm scheduled for a CT scan with 3-D something.
What happened? I feel like I've been run over by a semi, again. I can't have bone mets, I can't even spell it!! How is this possible when I went through all my chemo? Does that not conquer the bad cells everywhere?
My reading on the internet about bone mets is confusing. Is this a condition that's not curable? Now my PCP and surgeon are both saying that my surgery may have to be delayed!!!
Any advice, words of wisdom or been there done that, is welcome.

Jaanee - I don't really have any words of wisdom, sure wish I did. I was diagnosed with bone mets to the spine May 1, 2008. I had been through my 26 weeks of chemo, double mastectomy, and 33 radiation treatments. I did expect at least one clean scan before having mets. Surprise! BUT - while there is no cure, there are things they can do. For instance, as I feel pain, they will zap the vertebrae with radiation - I'm up for the T11 to have 10 radiation treatments starting tomorrow. I have also received a Zometa drip - my heart function hasn't recuperated enough from chemo to start a new chemo yet. But I am reassured that while not curable, bone mets are very controllable. Hang in there, prayers are with you.

Awww Jaanee....I can't help you on the mets but I am sure there will be others who can help along the way! I do know that once we have cancer we now get "canceritis" every ache and pain worries us as well as Dr.s HAVE to rule out...and by being on these boards...it has happened SEVERAL times and they get the all clear and it ends up being arthritis or pulled discs. or anything else besides cancer.
Anyway, don't get too ahead of yourself your already self diagnosing yourself ...Keeping fingers and toes crossed for benign!
You had me laugh about you can't even spell it...lol keep the sense of humor !
Much LUV

You poor love.
Canceritis - I love it!! Every twinge I get has me self-diagnosing!
Bone mets are SOOOOO controllable these days. I chat to women in the chemo room all the time and they are always saying things like "it was in my hip, but now that has gone" or "my spine was affected, but the radio has put a stop to that".
Don't panic! Wait until you get a definite diagnosis, and even then don't panic! This is a controllable condition, so don't write yourself off! Whatever happens you will be fine.

Janeee... Sending {HUGS} your way!!
I'll be thinking of you, and praying that you don't have bone mets...I do know the feeling, though. I was having back pain a few months ago, after my 1 yr. cancerversary. I was SO scared! I already had decided that it was bone mets. Well, I had an x-ray, and then an MRI of my back, and it is just a herniated disc. So try not to panic too much at this point.
Please let us know what happens. I'll be thinking of you!!

Tomorrow morning I'll get some kind of answer.
Canceritis. I like that :-) - I seriously don't want anything to do with cancer ever again. I know that's not possible but I'm going to keep plodding along and make certain I spend time every day growing my relationships with family and friends.
I was more than a little surprised that my doctor "hopped to it" when I just mentioned that I had one pain that was different from all the rest of my body. I guess I'll have to get used to that. Better to have a doctor that's vigilant than ignorant.
I've worked hard on not worrying so now the house is clean, the laundry's all done and I've made cookies and done some cooking for dh.
Here comes my first CT scan. Whoo HOooo!

Keeping our fingers crossed for Jaanee !!!!!
We are waiting with you !!!
Much Luv

Plain Jane to Jaanee....many {{{{{hugs}}}}} while you wait. And a prayer and good thought this is NOT what you fear, dear lady! Hang in there, we're willing it not so!

Guess what!?!
The CT scan was inconclusive.
It says, "this could represent an old fracture, but the possiblitiy of a metastatic lesion cannot be totally excluded."
I cannot imagine why an "old fracture" suddenly became painful and has been quite painful for nearly three weeks now. The CT scan also revealed a second fracture in the same rib. So there are two breaks in that rib and still no reason why.
I spent Wednesday morning waiting to see my breast surgeon - supposedly about a bone biopsy. Well, she won't do a bone biopsy until I've had a PET Scan. I can't get the PET scan until May 28th. And the person who made the appointment couldn't tell me how long it takes for PET scan results to come back. Does anybody know?
I've gotten copies of all the reports, X-ray, Bone Scan and CT Scan. One tells me that my hiatel hernia has returned - it's been surgically repaired twice now. Another said I should see a doctor about a possible fracture to my knee. My knees were surprised to hear that.
On top of all this dh has been gone nearly every evening to spend time with his friends. No we're not teenagers. He's Pakistani and culturally used to hanging out with the guys while the women hang out together. It's me, two cats, a goldfish and you guys. Anybody out there up for a game of checkers?
More waiting.

Dear Jaanee,
So, so sorry for what you are going through. It's just not right, being dealt another hand of rule outs.
I've heard most PET scans take about 2 days for results. I'd like to ask if you're having a PET/CT combination? It seems that with a broken rib in 2 areas, the CT added to the PET will help clarify the issue for your doctor more than the PET alone.
Have you been offered any advice on how to not injure the rib, or stabilize that area of the chest? I'm sure it hurts too; are you on some pain medicine.
We're here 24/7, so post away. Let's keep it positive, and send good wishes for benign findings.
Best to you,
Tender -
Thanks Tender and everyone else out there.
I don't know if it's a PET/CT scan or just PET. I guess I'll find out on Wednesday.
I finally did get some gabapentin - which seems to be helping. Actually it seems to be help my nerve damaged toes more. I could actually feel the bathroom tiles under my bare toes this morning!! No other advice has been offered on the broken rib. I think rest and pain control is all they do these days.
One thing is for certain from all of this - I will have to work harder on being my own advocate. The doctors are so worried about WHY my rib is broken that I didn't even ask for assistance with the pain from the broken rib for three weeks. I'm well aware of drastically increased pain in my knee but I've got so many appointments with so many different doctors that adding in the orthopedic doc seems like too much.
If I don't take care of me nobody else will so I better get started!!!
That gives me more to do than just wait for test results. :-)
-
Wellll.... it was just a broken rib.
No mets!
-
Stellar news, Jaanee! Just wonderful.
I'm so happy for you and yours.
Tender -
Jaanee, you must be so happy. JUST a broken rib. We live in a strange world when we can say that! I'm really glad this worked out.
-
Jaanee,
That is REALLY GOOD NEWS!! YIPPEE!!! This is really sad, when we are HAPPY about a broken rib!!! lol I know, though... I was SO happy when my surgeon told me that I had a herniated disc...
