I just finished Chemo yesterday and can't wait to get my body back. Thinking of doing Weight Watchers. I have an appoint. with Onc. to go over next stage of my treatment plan. He mentioned Tamoxifen.
I have put on 20lbs. since my dx and its all in my stomach. Do you know if taxmoxifen will hurt any chances of losing weight.

in terms of loosing weight that all depends on a few things, are you in menopause from chemo is your thyroid working properly, chemo sometimes affects the thyroid function, you should have them check your tsh, t3 and t4 to make sure it is in the right range.
tamoxifen alone does not make it tougher to loose the weight its everything together. i too was very slim prior to this and put on 25 pounds, in my case radiation damaged my thyroid and i went into chemopause so all of that together has made it very difficult to loose weight. but with the proper low fat diet, excersise program you will be able to loose the weight.

I am holding my own with tamoxifen. I am exercising more which helps balance out my appetite. I've lost the weight I put on at the end of chemo. But I needed to lose another 10 or so anyhow. I'm back where I started. I've been on tamoxifen since Dec 1. My appetite is back to normal. Nothing unusual that I can blame on tamoxifen. My body is as creaky as always. I'm 52.
Hope that is helpful.

Im holding my own with weight on tamox too...Ive been on it about 14 months....I didnt have chemo so didnt gain any, as a matter of fact I lost about 25 lbs due to stress so they were always yelling at me to eat more!!!!
Im back to my more normal weight now so we will see what menopause and tamox does in the next year or so!!!!

This is very encouraging. I've gained about 15 lbs since my diagnosis (chocolate was my drug of choice for a while there) and I was starting out 5-10 lbs over my preferred weight. I'm going to start tamoxifen after I finish chemo, then have surgery and radiation, but I'm looking forward to getting my body stronger and losing some of this extra weight as soon as treatments are done. I was worried that the tamoxifen would make that impossible -- I'm glad to hear it'll be doable, even if it isn't easy.

Hi,
I've been on tamoxifen for four months. I've lost three pounds. Green tea seems to help curb the extra appetite that I have. Lolita -
I've gained 30 pounds this year with the stress of cancer and radiation. I started weight watchers 10 weeks ago and now have lost 11 pounds; slow but steady.
It takes patience. Basha -
Hi Mom2, I'm also a jersey girl.:)
I gained 20 lbs in 2 mos after chemo - mostly in the belly area. I was so happy to have an appetite again, but still exhausted while going through rads and working FT and commuting to NYC. No excercise and menopausal metabolism did a number on me. Been on tamoxifen for 2.5 yrs. Tried to watch my eating (WW on my own) and excercised sporadically and I couldn't lose. In January 2008 I got serious, joined myfooddiary.com and started consistently excercising (mostly daily walking and light hand weights a few times a week). Started bring my lunch every day. I've lost 15 lbs in 4 mos. (slow but steady) and plan to lose 15 more. I've been upping the excercise to keep the weight loss going - I've been doing Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds - Walk Strong and a strength training video and once a week I do the elliptical at the YMCA while my DD takes a class) I just got switched to Aromasin by my doctor but am finishing up the tamoxifen. So it can be done. I hope the Aromasin doesn't make it harder. I really want to get to my optimal weight!
Good luck,
Annie

Hi ladies, I've been on tamoxifen for 3 and a half years now. I put on loads of weight as I stopped smoking when I found the lump and I had my periods stopped for two years. I really felt hungry all of the time. I've been on a diet for over a year now and have lost 42lbs. I still have another 12 to go and it's getting harder but I'm determined to do it. I have been exercising as well - lots of walking. I think that it's not just the tamoxifen but everything together that causes the weight gain, maybe chemically induced menopause, comfort eating. Lots of things all happening at the same time. I waited a couple of years before I started my diet though. I think you need to give yourself some time to adjust.
Good luck ladies

Keeping a log of what you eat can be a good first start.
It's amazing how all those little bits you pop into your mouth can add up!

I dropped almost 20 pounds in the 7 weeks I took tamoxifen. But that's not the norm. It all came back with Femara.
Now, I get 4-6 hours a week of intense cardio, and strength train, and watch my diet. The wieght comes off, but oh so slowly.
No reason that you have to gain as you continue treatment. Look at this time as an opportunity to really get yourself in good health with optimal food and exercise.

I have been on tamoxifen for 3 months and at first their was a weight gain. (Am 40 and on ovarian suppression as well) However I have been committed to a fitness program and really good eating (saw a dietician and bio kineticist). Six weeks later there has been some (small, 3 lb) weight loss, but the difference that light weight training, cardio has been amazing. There are muscles!! Also has helped enormously I believe with avoiding any swelling in arm and breast area. Recently returned from a 10 hour flight and my body behaved. Other spin offs include better sleeping!
