Years on Progesterone now pr+

Is there any evidence that progesterone that was given for PMS for years (at least 15 years) contributes to breast cancer? I was told that natural progesterone, as prescribed by my ob/gyn, was a protector of breast health. My tumor is er-,pr+. I really have my doubts that all of those years on progesterone was good for my body.

Taking HRT for 8 years which included low dose estrogen and 100mg per day of Prometrium (progesterone) was certainly the wrong thing for me. I had total confidence in my extremely well-respected female ob/gyn. She was about my age and taking exactly the same HRT. Now all the studies show that HRT was a huge mistake.

The HRT was much more likely the culprit for you, and it is very upsetting to know that not just your doctor but the majority were asleep at the wheel about that. Dr. Susan Love and Dr. John Lee were really the only ones at the time publicly saying that HRT likely was not a good idea. THE biggest problem we have is that while there are trained endocrinologists dealing with the thyroid and the pancreas, we have ended up without any endocrinologists that specifically are trained for and deal with gynecological endocrine system and hormones, and yet the medical profession licenses GYNs to freely do surgery and other treatments that very much muck up the sexual hormones (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, melatonin, etc.). We will not have the BEST answer to breast and pelvic diseases until those specialists exist and are full members of each of our tumor boards.

FacingLife...It's definitely unfortunate that we have these situations where we confidently follow our doctor's advice only to find, years later, that instead of protecting our health, it has threatened it. I too regret having taken HRT, but I refuse to blame myself because, at the time, it was thought the best way to stay heart-healthy and avoid unecessary side effects of aging. And so we move on, even more determined to stay fully informed and make conscious decisions about our health. But there will still be mistakes in judgment and wrong advice followed. We just do the best we can. Looking back with resentment only hurts our own spirits and doesn't promote health. At least that's my take on it all.
