I love things handed down from generation to generation.  However, there's not much my girls want that I have.

When my fil passed away (mil passed first) there were so many things to go through.  Well, they boys (their sons) finally went over to clear out the mess and I mean they threw a lot away.  However, some of the stuff ENDED up at my house.  I finally (begrudgingly) went throug some stuff that my dh should have been doing (they were HIS parents).  There were old pics with no names....old people. I put them in the "throw away pile."  Very hard to throw away photos of people you don't know, that are dead and are family.  There's still things around of his parents that we need to get rid of...LIKE those "reel tapes" of my dh and brother's childhood and his grandparents, etc.  Then, his father put some of the "reels" on video tapes with horrible quality.  I was going to go through the stuff.  BUT IF HAVE DECIDED..it's up to my dh and my daughters.  If they want anymore of this junk they need to go through it or it's getting thrown out!  Those old movies too!

I'm finding more and more that "stuff" doesn't matter.  Old childhood memorabilia...my kids have gone through most of the "stuff" and thrown it away.  There are only a few things that are special that they kept.

It really is difficult throwing stuff out that belonged to our children.  Roctobermom, I feel sorry for you.

You ladies have a blast.  It's raining and I just went and rented the first season on House on DVD.  I will fold laundry while I watch, though.

I got my vacuum out three days ago.  I'm hoping to plug it in today.

Okay ... I plugged it in.  No rush on vacuuming.  Tim won't be home until Sunday.

OMGOSH! That is just too funny!  I got mine out Wednesday afternoon b/c dh was coming home from being on the road and thought I'd get to it, then started working on the garden outside and forgot!  Then yesterday moved it to an 'out of the way' of traffic location and it's still sitting there!  I AM SO GLAD I'm not the only one who's doing this!  Might I say, I'm relieved and can probably say it will be there till tomorrow b/c it's another beautiful day and I know I'm going to tract in sandy dirty from the garden to the fridge for a water, so........I might as well wait, right?  Why do something twice that can be done once! :D  Thanks for the shared chuckle today! :D

It's a big pain in the............  Oh, it's a big ol' s@cker-picker-upper for removing those things in the house that people don't want.....too bad it doesn't contain a big enough hose for larger items............like shoes, socks, towel on the bathroom floor, cats........Did I say that in my 'outside' voice?  Never............... OK girls. I will join you and clear out my undies drawer, which consists of the most grotty stuff you can imagine, I long since put all my good stuff in the airing cupboard, leaving the grot behind.

The drawer was in such a mess that whenever I bought new undies I just started a fresh stash in a different place !

I burnt all my bras, 5 years ago, I regret that now, as I could have pocketed them all, and saved myself a bomb, but at the time I thought I HAD to have special mastectomy bras.

I have a secret stash of chocolate, and a little bit of money pushed into the bottom of the drawer, so it means I will get to eat my chocolate, and do a bit of shopping now.....summer tops for flat chests !!!!

LOVE THE DOGS!, Bin.  I need to take my vacuum out of the closet.  I did that last time and told myself I'd fall over it and vacuum.  I never fell over it.  But I did vacuum because the kids were coming.  This time instead of not falling over it I'll take your lead, Bin, and vaccum when I get it plugged in....or not.

Bin,  The dogs look like they are interested in the vacuum. And they are cute.

Shirley,  My FIL used to say that all old pictures were to be burned if no one in the family wanted them. He had a thing about going to an auction and seeing old pictures being auctioned off. Too bad the old movies of you HD cannot be transferred to DVD and kept. They would probably be a HOOT to watch. I am sure when I am old and getting rid of stuff that the daughter will sell it to make some money. If she is ready to sell her toys to make money, I'm sure it will only get worse. The toy closet is still not back together because she was home from school with a sore throat, so now the room looks worse. Laundry mountain is still in the laundry room, untouched!! It is raining here so we cannot go out and catch frogs. What is my next excuse? I don't know if I can do my underwear drawer by noon. I am sooo slow at everything it seems. Some days I am not ready until 3 pm, shower, hair, makeup, contact lenses in. Don't know what I will do when I have to go back to work. Sorry, I can't get there until 1 pm at the earliest and you know I am always done by 3 pm. My boss will think that is great, can only work 2 hours per day. HA,HA,HA,

Kerry, I feel sorry for you too.  One thing, your daughter's not too lazy to make some money from the sell of he toys.  Heck, no garage sell for me.  It's not worth the few $$ I'd get.

The pictures I was talking about that I threw out was just about wallet size.  I've wondered where the Cracker Barrel gets all their old pictures and old stuff...signs, etc.  I have my grandmother/grandfather's wedding picture.  They looked so old. LOL

There are other pics of his parents and my children's grandparents.  They need to decide if they want any of them.  Obviously the other sons didn't want them.

Oh, but one of my bil's made me sooooo mad.  When my fil went into the assisted living in the nursing home he decided he could come in and take what he wanted.  There was a big box in my mil's closet that had a label on it.  There were items that she had "named" and put the names of the person who had owned them.  I was furious when I found that gone.  I didn't take it thinking we'd sit down together and go through it.  I asked him about it.  No, he said he didn't see a box with a label taped on it...I had a friend with me and she saw it.  Anyway, he eventually brought over a box where you could see the outline of where the tape had been removed AND NO it didn't not fall off before he got it home.  I told him that his mother had put that label on there for a REASON!  So, we would know who these old dishes, etc. belonged to.  Oh, and he wanted his mom's diamond.  His dad said no.  So, my dd who is named after my mil got the ring.  It doesn't have a large diamond, but she has worn it and sometimes on her neck.  My fil said his wife already had a ring.

And I said when someone passes I wasn't going to get upset over this stuff.  I only wanted things for my dds if they wanted them.

I don't know what can be done about the old movies.  It's up to my dh and girls.  Plus there's stuff in the garage I need to go through (I forgot).

    Okay, I'm feeling overwhelmed!

Come on Kerry!  I know you can get one drawer out and go through it and take out what isn't used and/or hasn't been in a year!  Then straighten what's to be left in it.  Anything that doesn't have a place to go from it, get's tossed. EAsy as pie!  I've got a drawer of socks and mismatched and left overs and winter socks from when we used to X-C ski and so on.  Like we've done that in the last 10 years, HA!  Those are getting donated to the local place that feeds the hungry.  Wool socks should be welcomed :)  There are sweaters dh has gotten and I've not worn some in years.  Just too warm with these warm and now HOT flashes, so those are GOING!  Hmmmmmmm..and the pants/jeans/cords that I'll never fit into again........those are going.  Some are nearly new! What am I am saving them for!  UGH!  So many drawers, so few mondays in a month! :D

I have belief you can do ONE drawer by noon on Monday KERRY!  I do!

    LOL....vaccum what's that??

I LUV hearing the sound of that vaccum.....that is ever since DH took over doing it......yup, hearing that hum right now. The upside of surgery......delegating....LOL. So now he's so good at it I think I'll leave it that way, maybe I'll do a drawer since I don't have to vaccum!

One way to decompress the closets and drawers......for every new item brought in you have to choose an old one to throw out! That way our hoarding instinct doesn't suffer as much or the thought that "I might fit into that old stuff someday" won't hang in there to remind us of those skinny 10 years ago days.

Deb.....if I get to Alaska it's a deal.......You bake and I'll clean and eat......Betty Crocker flunked me, I give up on that!

OK ladies , I started reading posts , and thought , "what a great idea"! Clean out one drawer by Monday at noon. Well , I would have to do it by Sunday evening due to working Mon.. But as I kept reading the posts , I too am overwelmed at the thought of it. Like gsg , underwear that no longer fits(pre dx). But they are next to new , I can't through them out! Christmas socks , holloween socks , pics , obituaries , things I have no place to put. Maybe I'll just go check to see if my vacuum is still here...

Oh however , I did start my diet! I weighed in Fri and I have lost 2 lbs!

OK , I will try to do some laundry. Or maybe not...

    Hi Ladies,

I will have to read all the posts later when I have more time. I think that I will start the underwear drawer on Sunday afternoon to get it done by Monday at noon. Actually now I am going on a class swim trip I think for Monday at noon with the grade 3 class. Want to make sure that my child does not drown in the deep end. Really the public school board does not have to be responsible to teach my child how to tread water. That is what swimming lessons are all about. DH had to put the toy closet back together because one of his friends is coming over today. So at least that got done. The mountain of laundry is getting larger because more washing is being done. Grandma is coming over to babysit tonight so we can go out. She usually folds my laundry, but I would be embarrassed for her to see this mountain. It is just too BIG!!! Poor lady!!. I will tell her that she does not have to do it.

Honeygirl,  My daughter saw your avatar on the computer and said "Hey, I want a pig like that" "I want to get a pot bellied pig" She loved the pig!! My diet was going to get started, but I saw "Ben and Jerry's" on sale and I had to buy 2 tubs of it. Love the stuff!!!

Honeygirl, I'd take the weight loss over cleaning a drawer any day!  You should be so proud!

I think I may stick my head in that drawer to see if I can do it.  My dh will want to know what I'm doing.  Then I'll have to give him that look of, ARE YOU STUPID OR WHAT!!! I'M CLEANING THE DRAWER!

I'm thinking about just emptying my drawer out over a trash can without looking at what's in there and starting over fresh.

Hi Kerry , I'm glad your little one likes the piggy. I love pigs. They are just so darn cute! Ben and Jerry does have a way with calling our names. You'll know when you are ready to start. Thats how I feel anyway. I really have to want to and be in that zone , or I fail. Just one week of being on healthy eating , I can feel the difference. Good luck whenever you are ready!

Hi Shirley , yes , you are soooo right. I'd rather lose weight than have a clean drawer! But its funny , I have been thinking of cleaning my undie drawer for a couple weeks now. (don't want to go to fast , just thinking of it!) I hate that. Cause , some people will get that thought and just go do it! They don't "think" about it for two weeks! What is wrong with me?! I know it is just , "stop thinking and start doing". I know thats why I start feeling overwelmed and end up not doing anything. But I can't explain why I can't stop thinking about it and getting overwelmed by it. Did that make any sense?

Shirley , I am laughing thinking of you giving your hubby that look.

Gosh , I feel like the "little train that could". I think I can , I think I can...

gsg , so which shoes did you wear? And yes gsg , thats exactly what I should do , empty the darn drawer over the trash. BUT , my mind won't allow that! Because I think what if there is something I really didn't want to throw away and I do ?! I'm sooo mental...

Ahem....'scuse me please....but I am not particularly enjoying all this motivational drawer cleaning conversation anywhere near as much as the cake converstions from before the let's get on a diet motivational talks (except for that cute exercising chicklet of Shirley's).

Now a whole lot better would be like....a few posts above I recall the mention of a 2 tubs of "Ben and Jerry's"....a topic I can relate to at the moment.

Hey g!  How was the wedding?  Did you bring home a slice of wedding cake to put under your pillow?  Now what is that for?  OH!  You put a slice of wedding cake under your pillow and you will dream of your future husband!!

Ahhhh Hah!.....back to cake again!! Tongue out

OK Hanna , I never did make that scrumptous cake I was craving before I started my diet. I didn't have the ingredients. And before starting a diet , I usually "eat" any craving for , so I don't crave it. So , I don't mind not talking about the drawer cleaning , but I can't listen to cake eating! Both fingers in my ears lalalalalalalala , can't hear you!

So I watched House Season 1 and you're still talking about cleaning out your underwear drawer?

I've been learning to tie-dye and my dil wanted panties.  So, I bought a six-pack of panties and dyed them today.  Tomorrow she gets six new pairs.  Maybe I should do that for myself, I'll wear nothing but tie-dye.

I love House! My favorite show. I haven't tye-dye in ages. I like it. Where do you do it? Bucket? Washer? That would be fun.

About the drawer...I forgot to do it.  Pardon me if I repeat myself. Can't remember jack.  quote from the author of this thread.  No, really, I did.  My phone rang while I was on the puter.  I went downstairs.  And, well, I forgot.  I only remembered now because I'm here on this thread.  And I sure AIN'T gonna start now!

Would you believe we have a large piece of that cake left.  I was going to throw it out because the icing is made of heavy whipping cream, two kinds of cheese, vanilla and powdered sugar.  It was very good and moist.  HONEYGIRL, hungry yet!  Just kidding.  You be THE good girl.  Some of us needs motivation!

Hmmm..Brenda, tie-dyed undies.  Unusual.  Hope your bottom isn't different colors when you remove them.  Butcha know what?  You could probably wear them a couple of days or may three since they're so colorful.  Mine are all boring white...oh, except for a beige pair.  How many of us can say EEEWWWWWWW to wearing the panties until they're disgusting.  That'll turn our appetites off!

I never plugged in my vacuum cleaner either.  Heck, I didn't even get it out of the closet.  I need to hire a cleaning woman.  I'm sure that would go over well with my dh.

Maybe tomorrow...oh, but I did get inspired.  I was watching this show and they were painting a room in yellow and some of it was panelled like mine and it was so pretty.  I've been so wanting that paneling painted yellow.  I need to go over to the "paint" thread if it's still alive.  ALIVE?  That's why we'll never get those rooms painted cuz it would kill us or we'd kill each other!  Shoot, I can't even stand for my dh to watch me cook cuz he noses in and then I tell him HE CAN DO THE COOKING..then we get into an argument where he's yelling at me that I can start paying the bills.  Now you wonder, how in the hell did he come up with that?  Cuz it went from him watching over me to me seeing that he's paying insurance on a car sitting in our driveway undriveable...been that way for 1 /12 years (almost).  He says he's gonna fix it.  I say he isn't.  And HE ISN'T!  Damn, we're so rich we can pay insurance on a stupid broken car..even has collision on it!  Hmmmmm....got an idea.  Need to figure out how to wreck that car and get the pay off from the insurance company.  It's not worth poop.  JUST KIDDING!  Next thing I know I'll be in jail because I was planning this fraud!

I think I should sign off.  I'm really getting whacky!

    Shirley
