Hi Tina,
I found that Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book is the best for a complete understanding of bc. I didn't have a computer when I was dx 3 years ago, so I didn't have this site to refer to.
I wanted to know everything and be very proactive on my treatment, but some women don't. My aunt wouldn't read anything because it scared her. For me, it was the opposite.

Hi Tina.
I am not sure where you live but I have a book called "The Intelligent Patient Guide To Breast Cancer". It is a Canadian book and has helped me through everything so far right from the beginning. You can get it on Amazon.com or here in Canada at Chapters Books.
I wish your friend all the best and she is very lucky to have a friend like you who cares so much and takes the time to help her through this.

I got a lot of help from a book called "A Woman's Decision"
It's a guide to breast care, treatment and reconstruction. I bought it when I was trying to make a decision about having a mastectomy and reconstruction. It covers all the different types of recon, has lots of pictures to help you know what to expect and lots of stories from real women who've been through the different recons.
I found it on Amazon.

Hi Tina, there is a book by Dr. Beth Dupree "The Healing Consciousness - a Doctor's Journey to Healing". Now it sounds like a book for doc's but it was a real breath of fresh air for me. I have either bought or received the above mentioned books but found this book held the most hope (not only for me, but for a solution to cancer AND a solution to the need for caring and compassionate people in the cancer field). Through her reveiling her life stories of relationships with breast cancer patients and how that led her to alternative medicine and a transpersonal life and yet she is still a renouned breast surgeon in her own right.
When I was doing research for my own surgeries (right after my dx) I found her doing an on-line seminar at UC San Diego on DCIS Stage 0. She also did a round-the-world telecom on mastectomy & reconstruction in order to help women all over the world see that even after breast cancer you can be whole..
I believe she is one of the contributors to this site too though I didn't find her through it so that I would have to check out.. A portion of the book proceeds go to "the Healing Consciousness Foundation" to support healing services for breast cancer patients.
www.bethdupree.com will lead you to the book or
www.thehealingconsciousness.com
This would certainly be a sweet and powerful gesture to someone who has just received a dx..

Tina- I would recommend a book called "B.O.O.B.S". It is 10 stories of women with breast cancer, written by each woman- it gives & explains the path reports, and what you will face in a very personal and easy to read way. I was amazed at what I learned from each women's story, and it was very inspiring. Our thoughts and prayers are with your friend-encourage her to look at these forums-hugs Denise

Another good book is Breast Cancer for Dummies. It explains everything including how to decipher pathology reports in simple english!

I found a wonderful book written by Barbara Delansky called "Uplift: secrets from the sisterhood of Breast cancer survivors". It was assembled by her from comments from survivors that helped them get through the treatments. I got the third edition of her book. I ordered mine through the walden book store. I think that it was about $15.00 but well worth the price.

Dr.Carolyn Kaelin's books are excellent

I highly recommend "Just get me through this" by Deborah A Cohen and Robert M Gelfand MD. This book is wonderful for the patient and caregivers. This book has all kinds of questions that she may have with answers from the beginning of the journey and after.
