Just wanted to add about red.  The red in my foyer isn't fire engine red.  Yellow accents, e.g. pillows, furniture go really well with red and the opposite.

Roctobermom, loved your red wall, but also loved your new dining room ESPECIALLY the little statue in there. Wink

Patrice, good ideas and your bedroom is clean!  And not junky!  Won't post mine.  It looks like I took a bag of flour and threw it all over the furniture!  Embarassed

Thanks, about the floor ...  when I moved into my house 5 years ago, there were only white walls, except in one bedroom which was electric blue and had wall paper (now my daughter's room in the pretty green). There was blue carpeting everywhere (federal blue).   The travertine floor I had installed, versaille pattern, is on the whole bottom floor.  Carpet up stairs and thru-out the upstairs except baths.

    ----------

Here's the family room khaki with whisper white trim.

Bugs, love the color!!!!!!  It's the same color as my bathroom which I used venetian plaster on.  I'll post a pic if I remember to take a photo first!!

    -------

My bedroom is mostly a light taupe but with the huge wall I accented it with Ralph Lauren sand effect in brown!  Ignore my old pic with my wig!!

Gracejon said:  It is difficult to cover over a bright color.  We did this in a bathroom that was almost a navy blue with primer and multiple coats of paint.

Use KILLZ .....  one coat covered that electric blue paint just fine.  Anytime you want to cover something, oil or waterbased paint, it works.  I even used it on my cabinets after having made the same mistake you did.  The stain from the cabinets kept leaking thru even after repeated coats of paint.  Put KILLZ over it and it stopped.  KILLZ is like a base coat.

AND one big mistake was this green I tried in the bathroom and I kept thinking that when it dried, it would not be so bright.  After that big mistake, I used KILLZ again but what a time waster I caused.  After that, I learned to buy in small cans, paint a small 1 foot by 1 foot section on each wall so I can see how it dries and how light splay will effect the paint!

And my daughter obviously loves to help her Mommy paint and we do have fun.  Paint is pretty cheap, so I experimented and didn't worry too much about mistakes since you can always go over it.

Try sponges, woolies, even Saran Wrap (I did my friend's wall with that and a crumpled sheet)!

I hope you guys don't mind all the pics ...... I love to paint my house ... but regarding the party:

That was my daughter's 5th birthday party.  I hired a girl to come in and do their hair and teach them the hula .... she and her crew brought all the food and cupcakes, did all the decorations,  played the party games with the kids and cleaned up.  It was a pretty penny but I was in the middle of treatment and had no energy to do it.  And I was too shy to ask for help from friends.

I just moved to the upstairs apartment, my downstairs apartment had the greatest colours, the living room was a very calming moss green in the main area and being open concept it had about two shades lighter in the same moss green in the kitchen area, blended beautifully.  The bedroom was the perfect cup of coffee with cream in it colour, I loved it, it went with everything, I could change my comforter without any worries of clashing. The upstairs bedroom is a robin egg blue and I really like it, but have to what what is on my bed now my old comforter and pillows don't really look good in it, it has lots of red, golds, greens all in metallic, but not bright. I have an old 1950's terry comforter with blue flowers etc. Perfect for the summer which I am going to pull out but by winter I will have to hopefully find something that will look good.  I like blue and chocolate brown together so I hope I can find a good deal by then.

So to make a looonnng story short (sorry) go with a latte' colour it's so calming and goes with everything.

I love all the pictures---I think the first thing I'll do though is bring some color swatches home----From your pics and descriptions I realize my monitor is in desparate need of calibration!

I need to be careful to stay light because the bedrooms are very small.

I'm hearing Benjamin Moore has a new line called Aura.  They claim it needs no primer and will cover anything in two coats.

    Rockermom--Love that travertine floor.

I keep leaning toward a light sage green but I haven't been able to hit on a good shade painting swatches on the wall.  ---Been trying a few blues as well.

Snowyday--I like some of the lattes in sherwin williams but was thinking for them more for the livingroom.

Don't even ask about the kitchen--The previous owners had a love affair with sunflowers-----sunflower wallpaper!!!!!!!!!

I love Benjamin Moore paint - they have little sample bottles you can buy for $2.99 and put right on the wall. The paint is a bit pricey but well worth it - it covers beautifully and easily.

My bedroom went from light blue (my choice) to dark brown (DH's choice)!! lol.  I lightened it up with white trim and white bedding in the warmer months.

I have a friend who has a lilac bedroom that is just beautiful.  That would be my next choice but DH would never go fo it.

rocktobermom - OMG - I thought I was the only one out there that was paint obseessed!!!  I could paint my place every couple years if my DH would let me!! I am always looking to change things.  Did you say you live in a Craftsman bungalow???  I love that style!!

I just had a thought!  NO, REALLY!

You can go to JC Penny's site and do wall colors and window treatments and colors.  The color wouldn't be exactly like you want, but you could get an idea..I THINK. LOL  I kinda think there is a site for Behr.

Yes, you can  go to Benjamin Moore and probably other places like lowes.  As you know the colors won't look exactly like the ones on the monitor.  The color in my foyer is Sultan's Palace from BM and it doesn't look like it does in my foyer.  Also, I like to get ideas of color combo especially changing from room to room.  Now I want to paint.  YEAH, like I'm going to get dh to help.  NOT!  He hates to paint.

I thought I already posted about the pics.  Geez, I'm losing my mind.

Bugs, I love that color.  I love BRIGHT!

Love your's too, Roctobermom.  Your Oriental rug in the living room reminds me of my friends.  What I like most is knowing those little girls had a wonderful time!  I know my granddaughter would love one of those parties.

I go with neutral so I can then go wild with the rest of the colors.  My bed rooms are light taupes with taupe wood work and molding.

One room has hunter - wine scheme.

One has a dark sage and accents with colorful Japanese obi's made into bed skirt covers and window toppers.  Have bright paintings from several trips on a couple of the walls.

I'm partial to light taupes as well.

Much of my bedding right now is sage green and taupe.

Tawyna-  I think I looked at some paint at Loews called Valspar.---

I was going to post one of the colors of our bedroom in Maine, but Bugs already did it.  I like that color, or something very close.  If you get good light from your windows, the room will be very bright.  Ours is anyway.

Our apartment is New York white, so in Maine we have color everywhere.  You might look at Colonial Williamsburg colors since you're in a carriage house, and Ralph Lauren has some very beautiful colors.

Post some pictures when you make a decision.

Shirley, notice I didn't take a picture of my dresser.  It's a disaster zone.

I have a deep eggplant-colored foyer with cream chair railings, living room & dining room have the eggplant or merlot color on the bottom and the top part is taupe.  I love deep colors.

my family room was wallpapered with torn up brown paper (looks like leather) on the top and a sage green on the bottom.  I had it done by a professional because I knew if I tried the technique, it would look like it was wallpapered in torn up brown paper.

Tina---Thats why I started the thread.  I started putting some swatches

of greens that I liked on the wall and once I saw them at different times of the day --I found them making me a little ill. Surprised---It all got way too confusing

Color is very important.  My bf is an interior designer that specializes in color theory.  Red is a stimulating color (why we want it in our dining rooms).  Think of what you want from your room...relaxation?  Close your eyes and picture the perfect spot to "get away" and relax.  What colors do you see?  There you go!

Another good trick is to look in you closet.  What colors do you wear everyday?  That is the colors that you feel best in.  Chose your paint choices from what you put on everyday.

    Best of luck!

We recently had all our rooms painted with Benjamin Moore paint....you can go to the store and buy small sample jars of paint.  We then purchased some poster board paper and painted them with the samples.  It gave us a much better idea of how the paint would actually look.  They also have a website where you can play around with different colors, but that may not reflect the true color as it will be on your walls.  I taped the painted poster board to the walls, so I could see it in different lighting.

Well now I see where you all have been!  Playing in the paint box!

(g - just what exactly do you do with...ahem...those tassels hanging from the bedpost?!? Wink OoooLala g!)

Now, onto colors.  Here is what I do.  Instead of going straight to the paint store, I go to the fabric store.  Be it Walmart or some fancy store, I go and get some swatches of a fabric that "speaks to me". Ah, no I'm not hearing voices, I meant that metaphorically.   This fabric then could become a pillow or I'll wrap it around a wood frame then staple gun it tight.  Then hang it on the wall.  Or do something with it.  But the start of the whole thing is I see colors I like in a piece of fabric, then use that in the paint store to find the paint.  Or, you could get those big sample pages at the paint stores that have color combos that go well with each other and look at the pictures.  Sometimes, the pictures will grab you but when you look at the color chip, it will seem too intense - so go lighter.  Better lighter than darker so to avoid having to use the Kilz which stinks and I dislike stinky paint.

You all are so creative here!  Love this thread!

Hanna!  Kilz is great.  It actually covers up smells.  You can also tint the Kilz like the painters did when painting our foyer a reddish color.  Of course they still had to put two coats of paint on the white walls.

It's really nice to have freshly painted walls.  No finger prints.  No scratches.  Except where one of my cats likes to act like a nut and jump in the air and hit the foyer wall.  She goes crazy at least once a day.
