    HI Linda,

I am BRCA2+ and a 2 year Breast cancer survivor. I have not had to deal with this.

I read an article recently that said Ovarian Cancer usually starts on the fallopian tubes, not the ovaries.

My onclolgist was insistant that my oopherectomy be done by a gynocological oncologist and NOT my gynecologist.

she removed my ovaries, fallopian tubes and dida peritoneal wash.

    I hope this helps you

    Best of luck

    Susan

    Hi Susan,

Thank you for your response.  I had a total hysterectomy 10 years ago and in 2006 had a bi-lateral mastectomy.  I am BRCA1 positive and thought I was in the clear because I no longer have ovaries or breasts - then I read an article on Primary Peritoneal Cancer.  Apparently people that are BRCA1+ have a higher risk of getting this type of cancer even if they have no ovaries.  This is because PPC is a rare cancer that starts in the Peritoneum.  Peritoneum is the membrane that lines the inside of the abdomen. The lining of the abdomen and the surface of the ovary come from the same tissue when we develop from embryos in the womb. PPC is a cancer that starts in this tissue. I beat breast cancer but I have many other cancers in my family (stomach, pancreatic, hodgkins lymphoma, brain, eye, cervical) so I guess I am a tad paranoid.  I am going to request a CA125 blood test once a year.  This test checks the levels of protein called CA125.  Levels of this can be higher than normal of PPC is present.  Anyway, thanks for listening and responding.  Take care and have a great day.  Regards, Linda.
