    Ladies,

Presently I am on herceptin for a year. I feel safe and comfortable. (Like a security blanket) I know I will be ending this treatment at the end of November. The question I would like to ask you all is...How do you deal with the emotions of not having it. I personally feel it is going to be difficult especially when I cannot take the hormone pills. I was wondering what your feeling where like and how long did it take to block it our of your mind and move on after herceptin stopped?

    Hi,

Wow I hate to say it but it is nice to find someone else who is er- and pr- (and her2 positive?).  I am past the chemo and radiation stage and I was on herceptin but had to quit after just 2 months because of its effect on my heart.  I was given Tykerb the newest drug for us non-hormone responders and unfortunately I only lasted 2 months on that drug as well as it was also playing with my heart.

Apparently my response to the herceptin and tykerb are not typical, but I would sure like to know if anyone else is in my boat?

So Deb as of a few days ago I am currently entirely cancer drug free (despite my dx 9/14/2006, Stage II/B, Grade 3, 2/15 nodal involvement).  As far as feelings go being now no longer able to take any drugs in the adjuvant setting, I must confess I love it!  At the back of my mind is the awareness that maybe this is a fool's paradise, but I am just appreciating the reprieve.  I am also enjoying the chance to look into supplements.

    Take care, Rina

    HI Deb,

initially Iwas very happy to be finished with the chemo room. But I missed the attention and vigilence of my medical team.

I had gone back to work during rads so was busy in work and at home.

I still worry daily that it will return and my life will be shorter than I have hoped. But....these thought are brief and I am able to chase them away. My family and friends rarely mention it any more. I pla things for the future and am back to worrying about my retirement plans,LOL. Life is good.

    Keep busy,live and love.

    Fists up!

That period after I finished chemo and rads, felt like I had been thrown to the wolves!  Plus everyone wants to think that you are cured so just move on and forget about it.  Don't we wish it was that simple?  Every little ache or pain scared the crap out of me.  The onc had told me that if I had a consistent problem that lasted longer than 2 weeks to call.  Seems like I was forever starting the "clock" on symptoms to see if I needed to call the onc.  I'm almost 7 years out now and honestly, once I got past 2 years, it got much much easier.

I finished my herceptin on 2/19/08 and also had some feelings of losing my security blanket.

However, my oncologist is monitoring me very closely.  I had several tests done one month after herceptin and saw her for results.

She has me scheduled for a baseline CT/PET scan in 3 weeks and a follow up appointment two weeks after the scan.

I know she plans to see me with various routine followup tests every 2 - 3 months over the next year (year two post chemo).

So I now feel like the fledgling bird who is allowed to fly free while Mom hovers nearby.

I am also now enjoying that some of the annoying minor side effects of the herceptin have disappeared (I am hoping my thin splitting nails grow out over the next 6 months).
