Is anyone from these boards planning to walk in this? I live in Frederick, MD and want to do it. Thanks!

If I'm physically up to it, I might be able to walk along with you, or at least a part of it. I didn't know this was so soon. I'm trying to push my walking on my treatmill, and increase my stamina. This would be a goal. But is it really 2 days? Do we go home at night? I'm not sure I can manage a cot.

HI Tender!
I received a flyer for it in yesterday's mail; apparantly it is a two-day, 39 mile journey. God, I only walk three miles, three times a week; am not sure about this! It's 26.2 miles the first day, we sleep at the Avon Walk Wellness Village (two person tents), and then walk 13.1 miles on Sunday. I have a very good friend who has agreed to walk with me and share a humble tent. Let me know if you pull together a little team and we can join forces!

Well, that's a tad long of a distance for me, Brigette. I do 1 mile, 1 and 1/2 mile at most at any given time.
I'll look for the flyer and send in a donation.

I walked the AVON walk OCT 07 in Charlotte and am thinking about DC. Any helpI can give,please ask. I was a first time walker. There are some good sites on training for a marathon. most of the valuable tips I got were from Running sites. Long distane walking takes the same wear as running. Hi Jacqui, yes I have lots of questions, mostly focusing on how do I train for such a long walk? Please direct me to the sites that were most helpful for you in terms of building your endurance, eating properly, and such. WHat did you bring in the way of clothing?

I'm tentatively thinking of walking in the Komen 3 Day in DC, but I've also thought about doing the Avon one instead...... If I change my mind, I'll definitely let you know!
I was on the Avon site today, and it looks like they have a lot of informational meetings coming up. Maybe if you can attend one of them they'd have training ideas, or maybe even a group that's training in your area.

I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I had alot of trouble raising the money for the 3-day walk last year. My daughter did it with me, so together, it was really tough - now that's me. There are many out there that don't have trouble fundraising. I have relatives that live outside of Frederick, so it would be great to do that and visit them. I'm from Plymouth, Michigan. Good luck and have fun. They are so amazing. But train, train, train - sooooooooooo important!

Training for the walk and fundraising is difficult but very satisfying.
I've completed 2 Avon walks in NYC. Avon will take care of you every step of the way. There are rest stops every 2 miles and sweep vans to help those along who might be having a problem. I walked every step, but they are there if you need it.
If you go to the Avon message boards you may find others in your area who are training. I've met some wonderful people and found trails that I never would have known about.
I have signed up to walk again in NY, but I wanted the "Crew" experience so I've signed up to crew in Boston. Both my mother and sister live in Frederick, so I came very close to signing up for DC, but timing for Boston worked out better.
There are opportunities for volunteers, too, to participate in the festivities.

WOW Brigette, If something isn't highlighted or not grabbing my attention, I just don't see it.
I hope you have been training and all is going well. I will do Charlotte again this year. Some things that helped me..I actually carried a pair of shoes with me to switch into. I had a running sandal but will probably take a Crock type shoe this year.I could have sold them on the walk..LOL People were so envious. It helps to take off your sneakers and rub your feet, replace your socks with a new pair. So I carried extra socks too. I put vaseline on my feet then the socks. I still do this on my regular long walks. (Anything over 8 miles) I walk with a fanny pack and have some cord to tie things on. In my fanny pack I had first aid stuff. Blister bandaids, a big trash bag to use as a rain coat if needed. I had powder drink additives like gatoraid, salty snacks like peanut butter crackers, (They have snacks but most are sugary things) I carried money and cell phone incase i wanted a cab..LOL I carried my own tissue,a wet wash cloth, It sounds like I had a lot but my fanny pack is not all that big. It does have a bungee type cord to hold jacket, shoes, etc. -
I did the Avon walk in NYC in 05 and have signed up to do it again. It is a huge committment but a truly life-changing experience. The Avon site has a link to a training schecule for either 12 weeks or 24 weeks. I have also found a lot of helpful info at the about.com walking site. Lots of tips on shoes, hydration, etc.
Pegk - maybe we can meet up somewhere during the walk. I must admit that I don't camp out, though. I go back to the hotel on Saturday night. I figure if I've just walked 26.2 miles that day and will walk 13.1 the next day that I'd like a nice soft bed. Spoiled, aren't I?
I agree that Avon really does a good job of helping with everything. Last time I raised almost twice as much as I needed using their tips. People are so very generous. Almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way and they want to help others. -

I am walking for the 2d year in the DC Avon walk. Last year (my first) I raised close to $4,000 and walked the entire 40 miles with the Johns Hopkins Team. I just hit my $1,800 minimum today and have started walking outside. I do 3 miles on the treadmil 3 or 4 times a week and 6 miles on the weekend. I need to up it to 10 miles this weekend. Would love to meet both you and Tender in DC for the walk. Take Care, Liz

Hi Liz! Yes, I would love to meet up with you for the walk. I have been training using a Prevention Training schedule that I downloaded from the Avon site. Am feeling very good; this experience has already made a tremendous impact on me emotionally in terms of making me feel strong once again; I had no idea how much I still felt like a victim of cancer; today I truly feel like a survivor and cannot wait to meet lots of other bc survivors. I am staying at the Renaissance Hotel the night before the Walk. What are your plans?

Hi Brigitte, I was not able to get a room so I asked my hubby to come pick me up Sat night and bring me back in the morning. Are you walking with a team or individually? You are welcome to walk with the Hopkins Team. We wear pink cowboy hats and you can't miss us. We also have cheerleaders along the way in pink cowboy hats. I had a great time last year. Well, I did it! Walked all 39 miles; what an amazing experience! I was in tears as I approached the finish area, where people were cheering me on and hugging me; I was wearing my pink cap that says Survivor and just felt incredibly grateful that I was able to do this when two years ago I was so weak from chemo that I could barely walk from my front door to my mailbox. It was incredibly hard and I have the big blisters to prove it, but amazingly empowering. Met other survivors and we shared our stories. At the closing ceremony, they had all the survivors go right down front and we got a close up view of adorable little Reese Witherspoon who presented huge checks to many organizations specializing in breast cancer research and help. She was just as cute as a button! One thing I learned from this is that if I ever do one of these walks again, I will put together or join a team of women. My training partner was taken off the course at mile 13 due to heart palpitations; she is actually in the hospital! Turns out she had a pre-existing heart condition that she never told me about. Thank GOd she never collapsed during one of our training walks or at the Avon Walk or this would have been a horrible experience, not the overall positive one that it was. That's enough out of me! I'm just very grateful!
