Did anybody see the website FreeRice.com? You play a word game and everytime you get one right, the sponsors of the website donate rice to the U.N. world Food program. It's fun and good exercise for the brain.(Also nice to get out of the bc universe once in a while.)

Have bookmarked the site.   Was skeptical, as had much dealing with WFP when working.   Snopes says it is true--so, I will go play as often as I can!

It takes a lot of grains of rice to make a handful, so hope you all will play and play often!!!

Dern it!  You are right!  Got to 1520 donated pieces and then had to check out snopes to be sure it was worth it!  Cool Beans, or Rice!  It's true!  Very neat!

I love this site!  As a matter of fact, I just hosted a pizza party for my special ed kids...over the course of about 3 weeks, they donated over 50,000 grains of rice!  Kind of ironic, I know--poor people get a few grains of rice while my middle-class kids get pizza, but I wanted to reward them.

There was an article in People about the man who created the site...did it originally because he couldn't get his son to study for the SAT.

It IS addictive...it really makes you think.

Deb--level 44!   Wow!  I'm only up to 41.   I'll keep working on it--it is addictive.   Think I read on the website that the highest level is 55(?)--I'll have to sit here with a dictionary!!!

Scorpio--thanks for posting the info....FitChik--thanks for posting the link...Wish--thanks for making me think I'm not crazy for checking it out on Snopes!!!

gotta go play one more time!

I love the site.  I won't say what my high score is but having studied Latin is a definate advantage.  I told some friends about and they sneered "10 grains of rice", well it isn't much but if I play this instead of solitare for a few minutes - well some kid might be able to eat.  And I learn some new words.  What's not to like?

mke....come on...give!  I bet your score is way high knowing latin :)  Maybe we should have a competition and see who can "give" the most rice this week?   Might be fun....

That's a great idea Deb, a week long rice a thon.  You set the start date.  We can add up our grains and see what we have contributed.

OK, I'll give.  My score fluctuates around 50, and it is due to being a polyglot. I've studied Latin and Spanish, live between Chinese and Greek neighborhoods, had German speaking grandparents and being in Canada I have a passing knowledge of French and a wee bit of Cree.

OK...let's start today.  I found out you can have the site keep track of your rice from session to session.  Just go into options and check the box that says Remember my total rice donation from the last time I played.  we will see how many people we can feed in one week :)

Tell your friends on other threads to join us and play along :)

OMG!  I just donated 680 pieces of rice!!  If you keep going, after you mess up, they will repeat the ones you missed, and if you remember, you will get them right the second time around!  This is fun!!!

    It's very addicting!!!

Oooh - I like a site where even those of us with a Neanderthal dial-up connection can play. Cool

Y'all are already having an impact. If you look under the totals tab you will see that the donations have increased dramatically starting mid-month! So have we found out the highest rating posible? I got to 47 on my first visit. But then I have a bit of Latin in my background, too. And, yes, I am a word nerd. It's genetic.

Amygdaloid. That was the word that tripped me up!

Donated lots of rice, but spent a lot of time doing it. lol...

I have to send this site to my little guy. SAT prep next year means it's never too early to start studying. At least this way he can have fun doing it...

In just a few minutes I donated 940 grains of rice.  If this site is for real, I can't wait to share it with my friends.

I'm going strong, but I'd like to know how many grains of rice are in a pound.  I'm sure not going to count them, but I'd like to know.

BethNY, apparently it is for real, there was an article in the NY Times a while back and it seems to me that they started out with 10 grains per word, maybe they got more advertisers.  On the other hand I have chemo brain - even I don't trust what I say.

I'm up to 13,000 grains of rice.  I got to level 45, then had a brain fart and ended up back at level 41....LOL

You've more grains than me Deb.  I'll warn you they get real mean when you get up to 50 or so.  I have repeatedly missed knowing that kor means 10 elaphs.  So far they haven't asked me what an elaph is, but I might be able to remember it's a tenth of a kor.

This is excellent practice for the SATs.  So is one of those practice books - they get you used to the type of tests.

I've helped out to the tune of a total of 3980 grains of rice in three days. And reached level 52. They get to asking for some nearly medieval usage around level 49. Fortunately, I happen to be reading a history of the Plantagenet kings right about now. Wink

Worse than drugs or alcohol; stopped right before 20,000--it's 3:52 a.m.  Reached 52 but finished at 48--nothing like going backwards!

So, THIS is what's causing the world-wide rice shortage, and the rationing at Costco and Sam's Club!

OK, it's been a week and I did 20,000 grains of rice.   I also did some water to cook it in and realized that I haven't any idea where any southeast Asian country is.  I'm pretty shaky on anything in Africa too
